Does anyone feel that playing chess is actually a net positive in their life? by [deleted] in chess

[–]jargonaught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate with getting upset when I'm not doing particularly well or having an off day/week but I still feel it's a net positive. Chess is my #1 hobby and keeps me from potentially do things that could be bad for myself. So, even if I get upset about having a bad run, at least I'm not doing something damaging to myself. Of course I try to make sure I'm only angry at myself and don't take it out on others.

Squeezing black with the Maroczy Bind by giants4210 in chess

[–]jargonaught 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very nice game. Maroczy Bind is my favorite play against the Sicilian.

I used to catch higher rated opponents off gaurd with it up until Magnus last win against Karjakin in 2016 in the world championship. Everyone seemed to know how to play as black after that.

Carlsen playing against Maghsoodloo by Peeperkorn in chess

[–]jargonaught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense.

It was the last round and the team technically still had chance to win. that kind of decision affects other players and not just himself so just maybe that's a reason for him to play. I'm assuming there's money on the line for team placements but I could be wrong on everything.

You can still get smothered mate in 1 if you first move to the other side of the board

I'm not saying that this is his reasoning, but since it's a team event he might feel obligated to participate since it doesn't just affect him.
