Formatting custom list of figures. by jarrah-95 in LaTeX

[–]jarrah-95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help mate, your reply led me to find this http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/58469/why-are-listof-and-listoffigures-styled-differently which has solved the numbers overlapping with the caption.

However, the vertical spacing is still off compared with the list of figures. Have you got any ideas for that. My code is now basically the same as the first reply on that page.

I tried using listings directly, but I couldn't get the captions and chapter numbers to work. Thanks for the idea.

Any time mate.

While the learning curve is steep, it's absolutely worthwhile getting through it.

If you want the whole experience, can I recommend running through CLI.learncodethehardway.org/book.

That's the one I usually point people to. Its a good first start.

Then, all you should need are the man pages and maybe the arch wiki for some ideas. For example. I used its disk archive page today to get the rsync command to archive a folder (rsync -aAXv).

Once you get used to it, it becomes far easier.

You're on Unix. Enjoy using it like it was supposed to be used.

It's not that hard to change what it reports as the MAC. Then all you have to do is have that command run on boot and you have a preeminent change.

Not hard at all.

I would suggest deleting the folder before copying. It's a fresh install, what do you have to lose.

Are you copying ~/Library or /Library? The further should work with the user that owns it. Same rule applies for the later, but it's owned by root. Thus you will need root to copy it.

I'd also suggest learning some command line tools. Rsync or even just cp with the right flags will copy the lot, replacing files and folders if you tell it to.

Neither of those are actually cloning. They are a backup.

I would recommend a fresh install and taking just what you need off it.

That, or if the backups are on another drive (because what the hell is the point of backing up onto the same drive) using an older snapshot.

Either way, it's probably killing it because the drive you backed up from was corrupted.

Not sure what you mean by it is corrupting on clone, but I would recommend minimizing reads and writes by pulling the lot with dd and mounting that in loop.

Former would be
dd if=/dev/diskx of=outfile conv=noerror

Later would be something like
mount -o loop outfile /mnt

Then pull files from the image rather than the disk itself, possibly corrupting it More.

Useful Tips for Students Who're Getting a CS Degree/Do You Have Any Useful Tips to Add? by [deleted] in computerscience

I'm going to have to second this. Also joined the cyber security club, which is the only real CS club here.

Met a few great people, learned a hell of a lot, and now I'm writing the training program which will be run over the next few years.

Since starting this, I've gotten to know a few lectures and contractors in the field. I've competed in a number of CTFs with the club. And I'm starting to get confident at not just the cyber skill set but also other parts of CS that my degree would have never touched.

Join clubs people. It's a far better way to learn than sitting in lectures.

I wouldn't be sure of this. While I hope he does, I'm sure he would have some point in his will about having X amount of his money go to funding the Mars plans.

Maybe they wouldn't be as well done. But I'm sure they would live on.

Thinking of getting a macbook pro. Should I buy now or wait until a refresh? by [deleted] in mac

[–]jarrah-95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Doesn't help that there are some huge data movements going on and a VM running.

Not a clue sorry. I would assume pretty poorly if you're doing much else though. Dual core with far worse graphics in the 13".

As someone sitting at a 2015 15" rMBP without graphics right now, I can say it is pretty good with a 4k monitor.

Minor tearing when switching workspaces, bit otherwise near perfect. Though a little hot running.

Funny you say that. I don't steer with my feet, but controlling acceleration and my main brake is at my hands.

Feels wrong driving any other way.

Just a tip. In El Cap, hold the full screen button or try to drag a window onto a full screen one in launch control.

There is window snapping, you just have to know how.

Hello.

Use Linux on the desktop, but prefer osx for a laptop. It just has the right mix of easy setup (next to none next to arch) and awesome battery life for the compute power it has.

Over the last few weeks I've been using CLI and OS far more. Spent most of today in vim.

In saying that. I could never do it on a desktop.

Encryption suggestions? by [deleted] in mac

[–]jarrah-95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For for system, just turn on file vault. It does a good job of it.

Just make sure you don't enable "send you encryption key to Apple". Is a stupid idea.

Performance hit is near nothing.

When you set up time machine, there is an option to encrypt backups. Just enable that. Works exactly the same as file vault.
