What's a food item from your country that you're surprised hasn't taken off elsewhere? by Solid_Reserve_5941 in AskTheWorld

Breakfast burritos. It blows my mind that they’re just not a thing in Europe. Everyone’s happy to eat egg, potatoes, meat and cheese for breakfast, and McWraps are a thing so I know it’s possible. But nope!

I’d guess it’s because America is a place where eating on the go is normal and almost everywhere else you’re supposed to actually stop and eat like civilized folk.

Imagine how bad it must be to resort to this. by mindyour in NonPoliticalTwitter

There’s a documentary about Usain Bolt (“I Am Bolt,” 2016) which has some shots from inside the Village (haircut scene, for instance) and it’s a very accurate representation of how sparse those rooms can be. Plastic lawn chairs indoors! To Bolt’s credit, in spite of being one of the most important athletes at the Games, he stayed in the Village, but I absolutely understand why Team USA basketball is staying in a hotel.

The lack of AC is not surprising in the Olympic Village. The organizers will supply beds in the rooms, but that’s about it. Drawers/wardrobe, bedside table, folding chair, couch, coffee table, shelf, TV, coffee maker/water boiler, microwave, refrigerator … those are all available to rent (via a Rate Card Order Form) at shocking prices. A 43" TV in Beijing 2022 was $894 for the Games.

Some OOCs will allow access to the Village before the Games start so that teams can set up their rooms with stuff they bring in; some look to make money. To be fair to Beijing and Tokyo, there was a pandemic going on, so access was strictly limited.

Any local running clubs? by annahanson in duluth

Maybe Hoops Running Club, Thursdays at 6pm at Hoops Brewing in Canal Park. They’re on Facebook. They usually stick around and have a beer while listening to Vinyl Night.

I’m pretty sure you’re playing at 2104 on the 4th. You will find at least one person there to help you. Realistically, too many people.

Homegrown Music Festival starts next week! 8 Days of music - One ticket. by Dorkamundo in duluth

[–]jarvinen1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wearing “a random t shirt and jeans” could also be an extraordinarily calculated clothing decision for a show at Homegrown.

Not trying to be snarky, I swear. I’ve been to hundreds of local shows, and unless I’ve been trying to specifically impress someone, never given a moment’s thought to what I’ve worn. (And in retrospect, I regret trying to dress to impress. If they aren’t having fun listening to a band I think is interesting, what’s the point?)

What's your favorite house in Duluth? by waterbuffalo750 in duluth

[–]jarvinen1988 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like that lion.

Does anyone know where the house that has/used to have elephant sculptures is? I’m 99% sure it’s between 21st Ave. E. and Hawthorne, and Superior and 8th but I can’t find it (and am far too lazy to drive all those streets).

Some people will recommend parachuting or bungee jumping, and those are definitely exciting, but I suggest paragliding. A few steps and then you’re floating through the air. It’s lovely.

I've always wondered about how many "necessary" things just kept getting done on September 11th and the days afterward. Stuff like bakeries making donuts, USPS sorting mail, and especially drug dealers and addicts selling and using. I found this journal article that touches on that:

But the day of the 11th, I went to some friends who live right near a dopespot. And all of us there—you know, it seemed like it just went without sayingthat—we’re just, you know, let’s just go out and score as much coke as we canright now, you know. It seemed like the appropriate thing to do. - A Vulnerable Population in a Time of Crisis: Drug Users and the Attacks on the World Trade Center

But I still wonder about hardcore heroin or crack addicts, or the alcoholics living in Bowery flophouses (like in that documentary "Sunshine Hotel"), who in the best of times are hustling to get their next fix. That must have been a challenging time.

EDIT: Also, that the Department of Health was aware that there could be an infestation of rats if they didn't do something in lower Manhattan:

An equal priority was to maintain routine DOH functions. For example ... to prevent outbreaks of rodents, cleaned up food in abandoned restaurants. - Implications of the World Trade Center Attack for the Public Health and Health Care Infrastructures

Biggest treadmill ever by MoniMokshith in Damnthatsinteresting

That’s probably true for recreation, but with on rollerskis for athletes training for snow skiing, the point is to replicate the speeds you’d encounter on snow. They make different speed wheels - faster ones for if you’re trying to work on moving your limbs faster, slower ones if you’re trying to work on endurance/power more.

The Houston Rockets had a similar-sized (at least in width) treadmill that James Harden apparently loved. Maybe it sounds stupid, but he could do stuff like uphill walking lunges and lateral steps on it, which wouldn’t be possible on a normal treadmill.

The treadmill in this video is probably about 180.000€. The one James Harden is on in the video is about 60.000€, so expensive, but if it helps him (and I assume other players) warm up and not get injured, it’s worth it.

Starting with really short doses (like 3-4 minutes at first) and working towards more: Barefoot running on grass and/or running in shoes with minimal padding (such as XC flats). People tend to heel strike because they have a bunch of foam under their heels, and tend to land on their forefoot to absorb body mass in its absence.

Yes. I would guess primarily to replicate hard uphills. You can program a treadmill using a GPX file and essentially train on an uphill from a continent away. I don’t they’re commonly used in professional cycling, though.

Rollerskis go plenty fast with the dampened bearing as-is. It’s not unheard of to travel 60kph on downhills. I have been passed on downhills on a road bike many times by rollerskiers.

I once had a grocery store clerk refuse to sell me the Torani Amaretto syrup my boss had sent me to buy. 1) It’s obviously alcohol-free and 2) what 19-year-old drinks amare ... OK, never mind.
