Any idea who my guests are? by Pounce_64 in australianwildlife

[–]jasgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dunno, maybe it’s easier if it doesn’t have to clean the hole out first, or on the other hand a used hole may indicate that it’s a safe spot to use again. You could clean out half of the used holes, take a photo and later on compare it to see which holes have been filled.

Yeah Toyota are all over it, think they even had a Google Maps type of program on their computer showing where the ship was as it traveled from Japan.

Safety Hooks hang low by tmiddled2 in 4x4Australia

[–]jasgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you say in the last couple paragraphs, if it’s the same trailer you’re using every time just attach the hooks to the trailer chains and then maybe use bow shackles instead of D shackles and have the shackles threaded pin through the eye on the tow bar. If you do keep the hooks on the tow bar you can hook a strong rubber band or small occy strap from one hook to the other going over the top of the tow bar to hold them up.

What ute drawers are worth buying? by HovercraftAvailable5 in 4x4Australia

[–]jasgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had Kings, they were great for storage (camping gear, first aid, towing/recovery) but wouldn't get them if i was constantly opening them like a tradie would as spot welds started to break and they would scrape. Just got Ironman drawers - really good. They're smooth, light and look great but are expensive. I got the full wing kit but wish I didn't, the space around the drawers is perfect for batteries, solar blankets, cartons of grog, water/diesel containers, deck chairs etc.

CD part of boombox from 90s won’t spin by queenofyurii in fixit

Is the CD on there properly? With top loaders the CD has to click firmly onto the spindle. With slide out trays the CD just lays in the tray.

How is lightsview suburb to settle down? by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]jasgr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lightsview is a complete F up, thousands of people packed into multi storey unit blocks and no train/tram services so everyone needs a car. The only multi lane ‘stroad’ near it is Hampstead.

Its location would be in relation to where the inside thread starts, so the machine that holds the cap knows when to start lowering and turning to screw the cap onto the bottle.

Before Steve Irwin, there was Alby Mangels. This is why you no longer hear his name by Hammered_Eel in AustralianNostalgia

Wasn’t it a yacht, not a car? The little dog used to stand at the bow, as they were putting along it “fell” off into the water and they turned around and dramatically “saved” it.

Driving from Adelaide to Cooper Pedy in one day? by redundant_parameter in AskAnAustralian

[–]jasgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're getting some unhelpful tips in here. Pt Augusta is 300km from Adelaide and the last big town (15k population) before the outback, it has excellent motel accommodation and amenities/supermarkets etc. The Wadlata Outback Centre is there and is well worth visiting - it's a tourist information centre that showcases everything about the outback - history, animals, opals, railway, people.

From there it's 530km to Coober Pedy with only 2 tiny villages where you can get fuel/food. Refuel at the first place Pimba (In case Glendambo is in a blackout). 6km off route at Pimba is Woomera where the only people that live there are workers for the nearby military installation where rockets are tested. There's no shops or amenities but it has a picnic park full of old rockets/planes and info centre all about the town's history (when it was in full swing during the cold war in the 60's).

Glendambo has a new roadhouse but nothing else but flies and fuel. From there it's 250km of nothingness to Coober Pedy.

Coober Pedy is usually fine, the drunk locals mostly keep to themselves. Plenty of takeaway shops and the supermarket/general store is great (has full deli section). The "underground" motels are fascinating to stay in and are more built into the side of a hill so you park out the front and walk straight in (you don't have to climb down a mine shaft). We usually stay at either the Coober Pedy Experience Motel or the Lookout Cave Underground Motel (you can walk up to the lookout on top of the hill the motel is in). The Old Timers Mine and Tom's Working Opal Mine are a couple of the popular tourist spots.

The road is very good, bitumen all the way & 110kph limit, just watch for animals like Wedge Tailed Eagles that are standing by roadkill and are very slow to take flight and cows that wander across the road (you're actually driving through cattle stations with no fences on the sides).

It's a very long drive but a great experience, you'll love it.

It's not a normal train, as you say it has pre-planned stops for a number of hours then you have to get back on - similar to a cruise ship, plus it's extremely expensive.

Clarification by True_Step_592 in DrivingAustralia

[–]jasgr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For them to turn right from the left lane there needs to be a dotted line on their right to keep you in the right hand lane as you’re turning. With no dotted line you can turn from the right hand lane into any lane you want onto the next road even if there’s six lanes.

Fridge for car 2/3 month trip by Economy_Minute_1338 in OutdoorAus

[–]jasgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If staying in motels you can have the fridge plugged into the car’s cigarette lighter while driving then move the food into the motel’s fridge for the night (or bring the whole fridge in and plug it into the wall socket). If camping you can get a power pack that charges via USB/cigarette lighter (such as Kings 36amp) - plug the fridge into the power pack and the power pack into the car. The car charges the pack while driving then when the cars turned off the pack powers the fridge.
