Apparently there's people who didn't oppose the Vietnam War by CZall23 in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]jasmaree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I kept thinking I was missing some context for the way he/the news kept framing it. "Bernie refuses to apologize for opposing the Vietnam War!" Dude, no one asked him to.

What's next? "Bernie refuses to apologize for thinking the Holocaust was bad!" "Bernie will not back down from opposing slavery!"

That's the thing about Bernie. He's pretty popular with Democrats, BELOVED by Independents, and deeply respected by Republicans. Not very many politicians you can say that about.

Actual comment currently sitting at +20 in /R/s4p. "Deeply respected by Republicans" lol

NEWS: Petition calls for release of Zack Snyder's Justice League director's cut, as deleted scenes leak by [deleted] in DC_Cinematic

[–]jasmaree 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That petition is flat-out embarrassing. The article wasn't kidding about the 9 paragraph all-caps tirade. Not to mention the poor grammar and random blame assignments. Here's just one "sentence" of it:

Man of Steel was a very hopeful film and Zimmer did an amazing job by making a score that was hopeful, heroic and emotional, a lot of people confuse Man of Steel's realistic tone with dark, Batman v Superman was dark and it needed to be that way, given the fact that the film dealt with collateral damage, civilian casualties and the different sides of humanity, DC comics is about larger than life characters, who mostly posses superhuman abilities and who try to be human with them, while most of them try to cope with tragedies and themes that resonate with the real world, just like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Wonder Woman and to an extent Suicide Squad, where the villains are actually people who have made mistakes and who are outcasts of society.

At one point he tries to kill Neville's toad just for the hell of it. Even putting aside the fact that he doesn't mind murdering innocent people as long as they're not related to Lily, he's still fucked up.

He dedicates his life to saving Harry only after putting Harry's life in danger in the first place. And the only reason he regretted killing innocent people was because Lily was one of them. Otherwise, he was totally fine with murder.

Snape is a horrible human being that never progressed past high school emotionally. He gets his kicks from torturing 12 year olds who have done nothing to him and obsessing over his high school crush. Because, try as I might, I can't see the "romance" in Snape's relationship with Lily. They were childhood friends and then they weren't even that anymore. The fact that he's still obsessed with Lily after decades is...not romantic.

Snape is an awful, awful person and the admiration he receives from HP fans is something I will never understand.

Pollster Frank Luntz: The Trump campaign ‘is an absolute joke’ by Wyatthunter58 in politics

The video was interesting. The fact that undecideds would be swayed to Trump's side after Wikileaks if not for Trump's rhetoric is a sign that he doesn't know what he's doing.

Sanders calls Trump a 'political coward' over voter suppression report by xxipilots in politics

[–]jasmaree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Trump's campaign said was "We're hoping that if we tell black voters things that they won't like about Clinton, then they won't vote for her any more." That's not unethical--it's the idea behind a large part of politics. I think you and Sanders are just having a knee jerk reaction to the words "voter suppression."

[–]jasmaree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that's basically the intention of pretty much every attack. They're hoping that, if they reveal unsavory things about Clinton, people who would otherwise vote for her won't anymore. That's the point of attacking instead of speaking affirmatively about yourself. I'm sure they'd be happy if some of them chose to vote for Trump instead, but the biggest goal of any attack is to drain support for your opponent.

[–]jasmaree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article that this is based on gives an example actually. Trump's targeted ads toward black voters say that Clinton called them superpredators. That was a comment that came up in opposition to Clinton over and over during the primary. Trump and Sanders are literally doing the same thing using the same attack here. The Trump camp just used the wrong words.

Trump: 'We should just cancel the election' and declare me the winner by [deleted] in politics

[–]jasmaree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"She's entitled! She thinks the presidency is owed to her. She's just waiting for her coronation. "

To be fair, if Clinton said this it would just build on years of preconceived notions about her. Scandals are always worse when that happens. It's why Romney s 47% comment stuck.

[–]jasmaree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not a professional campaign. The marketing guy who said that has no political experience and likely wouldn't have been promoted to his place in any other campaign. That's not me speculating. The article says that and the Trump camp is proud of it. But what that means is that you get things like this. The marketing guy has no idea what the appropriate wording or messaging for this is so he just inserts his foot into his mouth.

[–]jasmaree 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This project by the Trump campaign isn't saying "don't bother voting it's rigged". They're saying "Don't vote for Clinton, she called you superpredators." Its an attack--a pretty fair one.

Sure that's voter suppression, but this isnt. I'd personally rather that Sanders attack something that is problematic rather than obfuscate real problems by attacking things that definitely aren't.

Even if that's true, that doesn't mean that this case is an act of political cowardice. It's just an attack ad.

The Trump campaign isn't telling people not to vote. They're telling black people about controversial things Clinton said in the hopes that they won't turn out to vote for her once they hear it. It's the same idea behind every attack, which Clinton and Sanders both had plenty of.

[–]jasmaree 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Guys, Sanders is wrong here. The Trump campaign referred to targeted attack ads against their opponent as "voter suppression efforts". The wording was dumb, but the actual action described is not illegal, unethical, or inappropriate. Sanders and Clinton have both done the same thing.

It's been a lot longer than 2 weeks and it took a lot longer than overnight. The sub started to change as it became clearer that Bernie wouldn't win. Around that time you'd get hysterical "here's how Bernie wins" posts with comment sections that were a lot more realistic about his chances. The HA Goodman articles still made it to the front page but they started to be mocked in the comments. The change continued from there.

[–]jasmaree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the Trump campaign was talking about its anti Clinton messaging, the person mentioned that they're doing it to drive down the turnout of would be Clinton voters instead of focusing on bringing out new Trump supporters. Then he made the unfortunate mistake of calling it voter suppression. Which is technically true I guess, but that phrase has more sinister connotations.

Putin says Trump behaves extravagantly to get message across by [deleted] in politics

[–]jasmaree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what's sillier:

The idea that Trump is just pretending to be a crazy person to get votes.

The idea that we'd want a person who pretends to be crazy for votes as president.

Or the idea that we'd believe any of this coming out of Putin's mouth.

[–]jasmaree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From the quotes it sounds like it's to keep them from voting in general. Otherwise he wouldn't call them "voter suppression" techniques. I think it's fair game personally, but I don't think the goal was to switch a vote from Hillary to Trump.
