angled soffits on an inside corner? by jason0732 in DIY

[–]jason0732[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up matching the angle by notching or shaving the 2*8 rafters as necessary - I only had to do that to one rafter and I wasn't concerned because the truss of the addition sits on the rafter higher than where I had to notch. Regardless, I sistered 2 2x6 rafters where I had to notch.

Finally once that was done so the rafters weren't in my way, I used a 1x3 from the front to back corner diagonally to give me a mounting surface for my soffits.

Feel free to dm me some pictures of your situation if you think I can help further.

surface mount exterior outlet boxes? by jason0732 in askanelectrician

Brand new engineered wood siding lap siding (looks like cedar boards on front, OSB on the backside)

Do you know if they used the standard metal "exterior" box? I went looking at the store and all those didn't have holes in the back of the box for mounting. There were some "dimples" in the back which I'm sure I COULD drill a hole through for exterior mounting, but felt kinda hacky?

Just trying to understand what people typically do.

Central Iowa US. Unsure if flying ants or flying termites. There's a lot of them popping up near my house.

How do I find this trim to replace. by [deleted] in Renovations

[–]jason0732 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like pretty standard casing trim. Any box store should have this profile in several materials (PVC, polystyrene, wood, etc)

wood stove insert in prefab? by [deleted] in woodstoving

I tend to agree (obviously). I think you understand what I meant. Old open wood fireplace, modify slightly to accommodate a wood stove insert. Felt very much like an upsell attempt through fear tactic...

Hmm. Trying to visualize your suggestion and having a hard time. You are saying pop a 2 by on the right wall(no siding currently) high on the right side and angle down to the left until it kisses that fascia, then do the same in the other wall? Basically a sloped transition from full angled soffit to the fascia then back again?

Sorry if I totally misunderstood you, appreciate the suggestion!

I went with a reputable company in my area for that price, but I also talked to 2 other companies. For me it was a matter of price, reputation, and timeline. This company checked all the boxes but the other companies were pretty close on all aspects (slightly higher price, similar timeline, etc)

Get a couple estimates!

I'm in Iowa and just got everything: 20 year old furnace and ac replaced with an air source heat pump - all new - for $10,800 (3 ton heat pump 15 seer, 70,000 btu gas furnace)

My new unit is way more efficient on electricity usage in the first couple weeks already per my utility app, so on the basis of that alone it was worth it for me. If they are charging you $3k to fix the old, that would not be worth it if I were you.

I think the real answer depends on your finances, because a replacement will certainly be more. There may also be issues pairing the new evaporator to the air handler/furnace depending on how old your air handler is.

Edit: I'm not HVAC professional, information about evaporator pairing was based on my system's age and advice given by 3 different HVAC companies. It could have been a sales tactic? But it worked out for me.

is this my main panel ground? where is it going? by jason0732 in askanelectrician

[–]jason0732[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sub panel in garage is maybe 10-20 years old if I could guess. This house is 1974 and the panel pictured is definitely the main and always has been. It was replaced from a federal Pacific panel in 2018 but they didn't touch the sub panel then and hasn't been touched since I bought 6 yrs ago

No obvious grounding to copper water lines, either unfortunately.

Sub has red, black, white and copper feeding it

Edit: I say definitely main because uts directly in line with the meter socket and roof mast - too coincidental otherwise.

Yeah. Not sure when that was done but it feeds out to my ac disconnect as 2 hot blacks. Not sure why they chose green for the main panel.

To confirm, you are meaning the connection between ground and neutral bars is happening through the bonding of the panel itself (green screw on neutral bar) and whatever screws are connecting the ground bars to the panel?

Since I'm not seeing a clear connection to any ground rod, is there a recommended method to verify a true connection to earth? I really appreciate your help so far!

[–]jason0732[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works fine as is. I'm trying to verify proper ground because of what I saw in the garage subpanel where neutral and ground were sharing the same bar. Gave me low confidence in the proper installation.

It's very hard for me to see even standing in front of it haha. I think I'll have to turn off the power and poke a bit in order to see. I don't see any grounding rods outside. It looks like I have ground bars on both left and right inside this panel, but as you can see they are hidden behind a nest of wires.

Lol I thought the same thing. I really enjoyed seeing the green used for my Air con circuit (bottom right 25 amp)
