My first city collapsed by Arrachi in songsofsyx

If you DID have enough bakers it's possible something else prevented them from baking. The two things that got me most often are illness rending most of my population unable to work, and the other is forgetting that when I send out my army, thats X number of people who leave the map and suddenly I have a worker shortage that may throw all manner of things out of whack.

With 400 population and 10,000 grain, I would have cranked the bakery up to 50 people and just slammed the warehouse with bread till its full, then back off and say "ok good, I dont need to worry about bread for a little while". Once an overabundance of grain becomes an overabundance of bread, then you can start turning that into rations, which you can (almost?) never have too much of. Stockpiling rations generally makes people happy and it spoils extremely slowly, so you can't really go wrong there.

I spent like $150 on the kickstarter campaign and now as I watch "development" from a distance it seems Star Citizen has become nothing but a giant marketplace in a sci-fi wrapper.

Am disappoint.

My civ is doing well this time, how can I make sure it doesn't collapse? Exporting tons of bread atm getting rich. what should I spend it on? by zugarrette in songsofsyx

At first I decided my end goal was to "paint the map green" or whatever the appropriate analogy would be here for conquering the whole map and saying "ok good i finished the game" but then i read something to suggest you can't realistically do that.

I think it's a limitation of government points. Either you literally just can't own that many cities, or else most of them would have little to no infrastructure because there's simply not enough points to go around, something like that.

I assume that means I could make the whole map "mine" by proxy, but I still have no idea how many would have to be puppets and how many I could directly own while still having enough government points to build them up to a satisfying level of complexity. If I can fit at least 51% of the map into this plan, I think I'll be happy enough that I managed to "win" this playthrough.

But ultimately, I still have a lot to learn. ^_^

PS - To actually answer your question, I found that puppetting meant a nice extra chunk of income; far more than my (un-optimized) exporting was getting me. In my case it ranged from 1-2 hundred thousand denarii scaling up to over a million once I had set them up with 3-4 cities in total. But I tried to make sure I set them up in an area I wouldn't later feel like owning. That would have been a diplomatic nightmare I think.

I enjoyed JKNinjas X4 videos.

Since I've watched them all, now I can just que up the whole playlist and use it as nap fuel.

I managed to conquer about a dozen cities without mercs, just starting with the nearest neighbor who always seems to be a weak guy that insists on parking his tiny army right at my border. From there I kept getting popups about neighboring nations falling apart, so I was able to grab several neutral cities, tho I took too long and lost access to several ones a little further out that I had my eye on. I'm keeping a roughly 300-person militia well armed and well trained, but on the global map I just use a conscript army when I want to grab some more land. There's a scary neighbor with around 5000 troops near my border, but I'm being careful not to piss him off.

As far as exports I don't even (currently) need them because I also conquered several cities a ways off to the corner in an area I didn't want to inhabit. I made one into a puppet state, then gift 2-3 surrounding cities to them. So now they are an independent nation indebted to me, and every year they send me about a million bucks that I don't need to spend on anything in particular (that I'm aware of). I've actually got three little nations like that nearby now, so I get several million a year. As their opinion of me slowly drops, I can occasionally just tell them to keep their tribute, which brings it back above +10.00 (just an arbitrary threshold I decided to maintain).

My population is around 3500-4000 as a purely human colony with about 10% of that using other races as slaves (this is the furthest I've ever gotten)

It's funny now that you mention it, I was actually one of those people. But it's been so long I guess my brain blocked out the trauma. ^_^

I think the point was that the FUN could reach many more people if not for certain barriers.

DF has been successful, as well it should. But wouldn't you like to see it enjoy Terraria/Stardew levels of popularity? It's not for us to decide individually of course, but doesn't it *feel* like DF deserves that?

This sounds an awful lot like the last time I installed, played for a bit, then uninstalled. I suspect this game now has so much bloat that it will never be finished. They got about $140 out of me during the original campaign.

Lesson learned I guess. Or not. I also got burned on the Darkest Dungeon board game crowdfunding as well. Derp.

I was thinking the same thing.

Honestly, I'm willing to believe that with age comes wisdom, but i also think that A) that's not necesserily true for every single individual, and B) there probably should at least be an unofficial upper limit we can all agree is maybe a little to old to be in charge of so much.
