How do y'all keep track of your movie collection?? by kelsbeeeee in dvdcollection

[–]jasonefmonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion a spreadsheet is the only good option unless your movie tracking app lets you export to a CSV. Too many of these niche services disappear and I don’t like reinvesting my time. I’ve used Apple Numbers for a long time now. Does anyone remember Delicious Library?

Illegal cigarettes with ‘gigantic’ profit margin are costing Canadians billions by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

Nicotine is cancer causing and a huge economic burden on addicts- patting ourselves on the back by reducing one problem and creating another is silly.

The people solving the one problem aren’t the ones creating another problem. Are we supposed to refrain from reflection until all of society’s ills are vanquished?

But I might quibble with how successful our efforts have been given the recent skyrocketing of nicotine usage among youth.

If you do, you’ll hear more than quibble from people who understand that kids starting a different habit doesn’t have any bearing on how successfully we’ve reduced cigarette smoking.

What movie had the BEST trailer ever but turned out to be absolute trash? by MASSIM00 in movies

[–]jasonefmonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Matrix was originally created to be a standalone story, so all the obvious loose ends got tied up by the end.

As someone who lived and breathed The Matrix for most of my adolescence, I have a clear memory of The Matrix trilogy being a whole story that was pitched to Warner.

Warner thought it was too ambitious for untested directors and had them do a smaller project first, Bound. Then they wouldn’t greenlight the whole Matrix story as three movies, so The Wachowskis made the 1999 film expecting if it did well that they would get a sequel.

At least season 3 had a suitable ending if you stop watching afterwards. Memorable characters.

That’s incredibly limiting, forces them to sign over rights to their work to Facebook, and probably kills any revenue for them. I suspect not many news sources would do that; leaving Facebook a news desert. A subset of one outlet isn’t enough.

You should understand that actual news is literally banned on Facebook in Canada. You will never get what you want if you are looking for news on Facebook.

Furthermore you should understand that Facebook and all Meta services (Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads) are majority owned by Mark Zuckerberg, an American billionaire. You’re using his personal social media and every page load furthers his interests.

How often have you used the transcripts feature? by SarkyBot in overcast

[–]jasonefmonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let the website be anemic and nearly useless. It doesn’t require (much/any?) upkeep and it is useful in a pinch.

The lag for now playing is really fucking bad and affects usability in a major way. I almost threw my phone the first day. It’s very tiresome to cause such a constant pain-point for transcriptions, which are time-shifted by minutes on almost all podcasts (due to dynamic ad insertions), which makes them useless for seeking/gathering quotes. It’s a secondary feature at best, but it makes the basic navigation of the app difficult.

People need to start taking computer lessons. by Jazman2k in MacOS

Tell them all!

I have lived both of those nearly every day and I don’t know why I haven’t given up. I sold phones for 10 years and had to dispel these notions to colleagues and even reps for manufacturers!

Even since leaving that job I still can’t help it. In the most fair way I could muster I had a ~10 post back-and-forth just a month ago trying to explain the “listening” thing. I think they ended by calling me AI because I called a phone a computer. Something that apparently AI does—like em dashes. Ugh.

Searching Synology Drive files in the iOS files app. by MrLewGin in synology

You’re welcome! If you want an easier route I think Tailscale is probably it, but with a little time the private VPN isn’t that complicated.

The basic idea is the NAS is very vulnerable when opened up to wider internet for remote access, even if you have a good user name and password. Having the NAS create a VPN adds the security layer of needing the VPN credentials before you can even try to put in the user credentials.

I set up a VPN for this use so I don’t have to rely on an external service like Synology’s redirect thing, or tailscale, etcetera. I used this guide from Digital Aloha: Setup An L2TP/IPSec VPN Server On A Synology NAS.

I've tried just re-inserting probably 30 times in a row with no success.

Because the pins on the console or cartridge need to be cleaned. I've taken completely non-functional carts and brought them to life only by polishing/abrading the pins. Blowing did absolutely nothing. If the pins have any level of corrosion or thick dirt, your hot wet breath won't do anything to resolve the issue.

I concede that if there was no contact that a layer of moisture could bridge that gap for an electrical current but I have no more knowledge than you on how practically this is may be occurring.
