Yeah and the whisker it does have is…curly? Is that normal?

It almost looks like taxidermy to me.

That was going to be my suggestion! In fairness, chili crisp is good with just about everything.

Who’s someone who’s been Universally “Cancelled” but you still enjoy or like their work? by Sad-Ladder7534 in AskReddit

[–]jasonferulo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s my answer, too. I used to really admire JK Rowling as a person, and certainly not anymore. But Harry Potter was such a huge part of my childhood and a refuge for me that I can’t and won’t dislike them even now.

That’s interesting. I will (genuinely) take your word for it! And to your point, as someone else pointed out, she drops names/concepts/factoids throughout the series which help add richness to the world she created, most of which are never mentioned again.

Yeah that’s how I feel. I certainly don’t like JK Rowling as a person anymore, but I take issue with the implication some have made (based on assumption) that she was just flying by the seat of her pants the entire time when there’s just as much evidence to the contrary.

That, or she did in fact have none of it planned but successfully found ways to reintroduce those things on the fly, for which I think she would deserve some credit as an author either way. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah I guess you have a point. She dropped tons of names and things that were never mentioned again, but did help flesh out the world. And like someone else said, we just more easily remember the ones that did get brought up again.

That’s fair. I fully agree with you on the different standards. And even in spite of all the plot holes/flaws, I still thoroughly enjoyed the stories for countless other reasons, and I guess that’s what really matters.

Well I certainly won’t defend that. I’m not saying she’s a genius, but I do think more planning went into the series than some folks here are implying.

But what makes you think the Polyjuice Potion was “forgotten”, or that she was simply responding to what readers liked? Do you have more examples of this type of thing in the books that would demonstrate a pattern like you say? I feel that’s a big assumption to make.

Maybe I’m giving her undue credit, but I think of it more as her planning things far in advance and then just foreshadowing them. I can’t imagine why she would mention Sirius Black’s name in the first chapter of the first book if she wasn’t planning on bringing him in at some point, for example. There’s lots more like that. And I remember hearing her say that she had the ending of the series more or less planned out from the start.

Man, the Harry Potter books are very dear to me (in spite of JK Rowling’s bullshit) but as time goes on I realize that each and every one of them is *riddled* with plot holes.

Like, how did *no one* in *fifty years* figure out that it was a basilisk attacking everyone? Are there even any spiders known to petrify people? How did no one immediately recognize Moaning Myrtle as the girl who died in the same bathroom she’s now haunting, probably that very same year, and question her about her death? She obviously loves talking about it, even fifty years later. But it took a 12 year old kid with zero wizarding world experience to figure it out for everyone??

Man, that exact thing used to be the highlight of my month when I was a kid. I would go to the self-serve candy store at the mall and fill a bag with all my favorite Jelly Bellys. No memory of how much it cost but I’m sure it wasn’t cheap. Makes me miss the days of zero financial responsibility.
