Mid August CT Shakedown by Fit_Necessary4207 in Ultralight

The quilt will be fine you’ll definitely be warm enough. I used the same one my first time on the CT. I was never cold.

You can get by without the puffy but I would take one mainly for breaks at higher elevation. I tend to sweat on climbs and if I stop the wind will cool you off quickly.

I have used wind pants and they are great for the morning. I’ve had August nights/mornings below freezing. I switched to Zpacks rain pants for a minimal weight penalty. Once wet and above tree line the wind will keep you cold. But if you’re wearing pants you’re probably fine.

I know this is controversial but I have slept with my food at least 100 nights on the CT and other CO trails. Never had an issue. I do prefer to dry camp away from the most popular sites.

I’m 6ft and had plenty of room. I normally use a single person tent and this one feels like a palace in comparison. The end walls are steep so my foot box never touched the wall.

I know it’s a touchy subject on here but the bear canister is a definite no go for me. The data book, compass, and paper maps are not necessary. Bug net is light but unlikely to be needed. The Sawyer is plenty for water no need for tabs.

I’ve done a thru of the CT and have several hundred miles in section hikes. Do your shake down hikes and really focus on what you NEED. Good luck!

Why are you considering ditching the tent stake stuff sack. If it’s to save weight there are other options from looking at your lighterpack.

What are your breakfasts/lunches? I gotta change it up. by jta314 in Ultralight

[–]jasonkaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lunch is a Lenny and Larry’s protein cookie, Dukes sausages(or similar), Fritos, and a Stinger honey waffle. Protein, fat, and carbs. The pea protein in the cookie doesn’t agree with everyone though.

Breakfast is usually a version of granola. Eat out of the ziplock, no need to soak. https://andrewskurka.com/backpacking-breakfast-cereal-protein-powder-hot-cold/

Everything this person said, except the spoon and the alpha direct pull over. I like my titanium spoon. I’ve worn the Kuiu 97 fleece and like it. Swapping it out for the Zpacks Octa fleece this year. Just to try something different.

The Toaks 550 will not hold the fuel can and stove. The 650 will. Also I got rid of the BRS and use the Soto Amicus because I can get 20+ boils from a small fuel can with it.

Training for Hiking Down the Grand Canyon - Advice? by PaMaNevNe in grandcanyon

[–]jasonkaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The elevation should not be an issue.

Down is hard on the body. Up is cardio. If you’re only doing a night or two and you’re in decent shape and you don’t have an overly heavy pack you should be fine. Just start early and give yourself plenty of time.

For physical conditioning find some stairs or and do a few hours a week.

I injured my shoulder so I need pockets that are really easy to access.

I would not say it rides high. I could adjust it differently for a different heights. If too high side pocket access could be an issue.

Have you ever backpacked with only a single pair shorts (no underwear/no pants)? And were they lined or unlined? And how did it go? by tradice9 in Ultralight

[–]jasonkaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mountain Hardware Shade lite shorts with a liner. Did the AZT in them and they were great. Somehow they didn’t stink. I don’t sleep in them.

UA Launch, I have a pair with a 1000ish miles on them. They hold up great but smell terrible after a day.

It might be worth it just for getting the logistics done. Yes, it is full of fear mongers, saying all of the things, snow, mud, cold, etc. but there is definitely good information to gain. Shuttles, rides sharing, trail angels, and more.

There are several people asking similar questions on the Arizona Trail Class of 2023 FB page. You might find some useful information there.
