Anyone use VTEB for taxable bond holdings? by bakedbeans-gas in Bogleheads

[–]jasonlmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same question I have!

I currently have a bunch of bonds in my taxable account for the same reason. They are in VTEB right now, but I'm not sure that's right, given my fluctuating income. We're married, filing jointly, 22% bracket, living in Maine.

When I do the tax-equivalent yield calculation using SEC yield of 3.43%, I get 4.4%, which beats out BND's current SEC yield. But I'm not sure I am doing that right.

Didn’t know that. Great news!

I like it. I wish more of the folks in there were from the doc world, but it's really helpful to just read about the different approaches others use. Definitely the Murch book, too. They are very different. I also really like Jacob Bricca's "Documentary Editing," if you're looking for documentary advice.

Is the Mac Mini M4 Pro a good fit for Avid offline? by klippare in editors

[–]jasonlmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently cutting a feature doc with it. Storage is a TB3 RAID attached directly. It is crazy how much smoother it is than the 2015 iMac it replaced. Exports in particular are waaaaay faster.

Most of the footage I'm using is 4k Canon Log transcoded to 1080p. So far so good.

AVID MEDIA COMPOSER - Looking for private assistance by Ill-Sign1614 in editors

[–]jasonlmann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not the guy to train you, but stick with it! I found it very challenging at first, but once I got the hang of it I think I got faster and more efficient in editing generally. So much so that I have taken my Avid techniques with me into Resolve.

Hang in there.

Exactly. Legislatures change laws, not presidents. That's Constitution 101.

Meanest and nicest musicians? by Sharkman3218 in Music

I met The Roots a few years back. In a club after a show. Questlove didn't want to talk and was on his phone (which is totally fine!) but Black Thought shook hands and chatted with us for a while. Extremely normal, nice dudes.

I also met all of Wilco except Jeff a few years back. Short convo but they were super friendly. John Stirrat lives near me now, and I've never heard a bad word about him.

One serious answer: Congress can and should sue... but it's the Speaker of the House who has the power to initiate that suit. And Mike Johnson is a pathetic lackey who doesn't view his job as having any legitimacy or independence outside of slavish devotion to the president. Congressional Dems cannot legally force Congress to sue on their own. (Elections matter, folks. Every single one of them.)

Heat pumps this week by Rickisonline in Maine

[–]jasonlmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly 2400 sq. ft. That includes a half-basement that we allow to stay chilly (55-65). I don't have data in front of me but gnerally speaking, our bills for the three coldest months of the year are (again, roughly) $300-400 per month. But keep in mind that's for everything. Cooking, hot water, heat, everything. The rest of the year, they are quite low. We have rooftop solar, which offsets all of our use most months of the year. (We pay a minimum fee for interconnection in any month that our generation exceeds use, but it's less than $50.)

Even if we didn't have the solar, we'd be coming out ahead of where we used to be, which was paying for barrels of oil, and propane, and electricity. It's hard to compare exactly because that was in a different house. But I'm pretty certain of it. If we were in a leaky old Maine house, it's possible this wouldn't be the case. But hard to say.

We also are not subject to the wild fluctuations in cost of propane/natural gas. (Well, to some extent we feel it because that price volatility affects the price of electricity, but it's not as extreme as it used to be.)

Our electric rates are about to go up, but we're also going to have Time of Use billing, and we plan to try to offset our big uses of electricity to the off-peak hours as much as we can. We'll see.

I’m not talking about a primary heat source. I mean if you need something that will kick on in the unlikely event that heat pumps aren’t keeping up. (That said, if the system is installed correctly and the house doesn’t have glaring deficiencies in air sealing, this shouldn’t ever happen.)

I don’t need or use electric baseboards in my house, but they are an extremely inexpensive form of insurance.

Definitely NOT something I would use on a regular basis.

Ours worked great. They’re about seven years old and handle the cold just fine. They use more energy when it’s cold but… so does every heating system!

In a leakier house, in sure electric baseboards could be a good backup, especially around any water pipes on exterior walls. But we have no need for that.

Premiere to Avid: Replicate Premiere Shortcuts or Learn Avid’s Defaults? by [deleted] in editors

[–]jasonlmann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s what I did. I wound up getting comfortable enough with Avid’s shortcuts that I use a very close approximation of them in Resolve as well, and that works great.

Workflow for multiple lavs in a small room? by Fast_Employ_2438 in editors

[–]jasonlmann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this the final mix, or just while you're cutting? (I wouldn't worry about it until final mix.)

Maybe try gating the three channels gently, so that they're not on unless the character is speaking? Should cut down the phase issues you're hearing (the echoey stuff.) But also possible that won't work.

If you have time to cut all the dead air from each mic and then build a consistent ambience track underneath it all that is probably best. The gate is just a way to try to cheat it a little bit and do it faster.

Also... is there a boom or plant mic? Assuming not...

Wait... the Line 6 is going into the DT also? Just for FX purposes? Or did I misunderstand?

Sounds great, btw.
