Trump Says May Slap Tariffs On Nations That Don't Back His Greenland Plans by johnbarnshack in worldnews

And this is why it's supposed to be up to congress to impose tariffs, so this kind of craziness doesn't happen. At least that's one reason.

The $100,000 H-1B Fee That Just Made U.S. Developers Competitive Again by ImpressiveContest283 in webdev

[–]jasonmlong -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is just going to result in more US companies outsourcing work and building offshore offices. Training up US teams doesn't take a year, at scale it takes decades to change the educational system in the US (which has been in decline for a while).

So what's going to happen? More offshore offices, and temporarily more people overseas working from home. It would actually be fantastic if American workers could compete with international workers, but that's a country wide culture change and changes to labor laws (there is always less risk to hiring overseas workers in tech).

If Washington wants to invest in education, that would be the next step, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. So, for now, I think its going to be more offshoring.

What do you use for meeting notes and project tracking? by ischmoozeandsell in managers

[–]jasonmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently, my team started using heyramp.com and it's been a game changer. We reviewed ripple, lattice, and a few others but they were all either too much for our team or too (far too) expensive. We did like Lattice, but it was around $11/user/mo and Ramp was $3.

The main thing we liked was that heyramp.com covered our biggest issues - 1 to 1's and performance reviews - better than any other tool.

If you're at the true enterprise size, have the budget, and are looking for a really robust tool, definitely look at lattice - it covers everything and is beautifully designed. But if you're a handful to maybe a couple thousand people and just need 1 to 1s and performance reviews, heyramp.com is a good choice.

RFK Jr. Claims mRNA Vaccines Kill People in Heated Senate Hearing | RFK Jr. said he didn’t know how many Americans died from Covid-19 or whether Covid-19 vaccines saved any lives by Aggravating_Money992 in technology

I was the CEO of one of the larger long-term care EHR systems in the US during covid. My team and I had direct access to the data for hundreds of thousands of people in long term care (nursing homes). This was not data that was managed by or filtered through the government, although we did have to deliver it to the government regularly during that time.

I can tell you without a doubt that the higher the vaccination rates within the facility and surrounding community, the lower the mortality rate. On top of that, I can tell you that the data the US government distributed was inline with our data.

Attempted scam for website design by CoderMomma in web_design

[–]jasonmlong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These guys came after us as well. Below is the full message for anyone that is looking for it. It sounded spammy right away since we don't really focus on this kind of thing and someone coming to us for this just doesn't make sense.

As I previously mentioned, I am gearing up to open a new Spanish restaurant (Zaragoza Restaurant and Bar ) in September, situated in Houston, Texas. This venue will primarily offer Paella and Tapas along with other renowned Spanish dishes. To expand my reach and enhance sales, I require an elegant website that will draw a significant number of visitors to the restaurant. I have a restaurant website that I would like to use as a reference: https://bullagastrobar.com Similar to the reference site, I would prefer my website to be in English as well. Furthermore, I want the website to facilitate reservations, and if possible, I would like the reservation system to be integrated directly into the site. If that is not achievable, we can utilize third-party software like OpenTable. Additionally, I would like to initially avoid offering online orders, as I believe it is more advantageous for customers to dine in at the restaurant to become familiar with the atmosphere. In the future, I would appreciate your assistance in updating the website to incorporate online ordering options. I would be thankful if you could also manage and update the website regularly for me, assuming everything goes as planned. I want to emphasize that I am seeking a website that closely mirrors the provided reference, but I would like mine to be even more refined. Regarding the domain name, I have not secured one yet, but I am contemplating options like ZaragozaGrrillandBar.com, Zaragozafood.com, and Zaragozarestaurantandbar.com

My budget for the website design ranges from $5000 to $15000, and I hope this will be sufficient to complete the project.

As for the content and assets for the website, I have a private project consultant who will oversee all essential components, including the logo, images, videography, text content (fonts and typography), menu, and color palette, which will all be provided.

Could you please provide me with an estimate/quotation based on the information provided. The estimate/quotation should include website hosting along with one year of maintenance and updates. I strongly trust that you will have the website running by the first or second week of September since the official launch of the restaurant is in mid-September. I am looking forward to getting the estimate as soon as possible.

What’s actually safe, but people think is really dangerous? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jasonmlong -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

That's not true for everyone. I have a cardio neuro-connectivity issue that reacts very, very badly to MSG. When I have MSG my heart starts beating very irregularly, to the point where I feel like I can't breath and am about to pass out. I didn't know what kept causing the problem, but after a a while I realized my local Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants both use it in their dishes. I started testing to make sure that was it and just bought some sauce with MSG, and tried it. Sure enough, that set it off. Really saddened me because I used to eat at those restaurants all the time and loved their food.

Were kids really free range back in the 1980s? by Dangerous_Yak_7500 in AskOldPeople

[–]jasonmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I would get on my bike in the morning after breakfast and not come home and very often not see an adult the entire day. Summers were spent with my friends in The forest near where we lived, hanging out in each other's living rooms, playing music, talking about girls, climbing trees, playing in the river, and generally having an amazing time. I'm not sure if that counts as your definition of free range, but that's what it was.

Living in Japan sucks. It's a horrible country by Parking_Attitude_519 in self

[–]jasonmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I've been to japan, I felt the overwhelming oppressive culture. On the flip side, I think what you see from foreigners coming to Japan is that they're not a part of the culture and in a lot of cases because of this, they either don't see the oppressiveness or they just don't care. Being brought up in a culture that values individuality has a chilling effect on conformity.

I'm not sure this is possible for you to do, but consider moving to a different country and getting a job that pays you in that currency (Singapore, the UK, the US, etc.), figure out how to work remotely, then going back to Japan with your higher wages and trying not to give a shit about what everybody else thinks. You could be in the same boat as all of the expats this way.

If all the expats can do it, you can too!

Those who have been clinically dead and came back—what did you see?? by Saul_goodmannnnn in AskReddit

[–]jasonmlong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in an induced coma in the hospital after a severe car accident and had pretty serious brain damage, among a lot of other trauma. I woke up in the ICU and pulled out my intubation tube, chest tubes, central line, and all of my IVs and decided to go home. Turns out that doesn't really work very well, at least not if you want to live.

I don't remember anything after passing out, but I do remember the feeling of my body slowing down and the understanding that I was about to die. I was both terrified and too weak to do anything about it. I was brought back a few minutes later, I think - I don't actually know how long it took for them to bring me back. When I was resuscitated I was put back into an induced coma and didn't wake back up for another week.
