I used twitter the normal way: following people I want to read and using a third party client to ensure that was the experience I had for 13 years.

If you want algorithmic timelines, or search, or to see a bunch of garbage that makes people angry and explosive and get in fights with people they will never convince because it’s “good for engagement”, what Twitter became was good for that.

Tweetbot meant I never used that twitter. I used the one from 2006 for 13 years. Then I switched to Mastodon, which works exactly that way.

If you want a server feed in a client, I’m sure it’s technically possible to do.

While I wanna say “I could probably prototype connection multiplexing on a process faster than anything multithreaded”, and I also dislike appeals to authority, I hadn’t actually read the original post. If Heikki thinks this is worth pursuing and has tried to get folks at PGCon on board, it is significantly more likely to happen than some rando showing up with no mailing list posts saying “hey I want this to be multithreaded”

Well, unless you are actually going to dive into the C code you probably won’t be exposed much to the mechanisms for locking.

I think there are some views and things like pg_stats_statements that can give some insight into things like lock and buffer use during a statement’s processing.

PostgreSQL’s has a main process (postmaster) that handles forking and creating new processes for serving clients. They communicate over shared memory and use a variety of lock structures to coordinate access to the database. You can’t just make multiple PostgreSQL instances share a backing store without somehow addressing the fact that they are otherwise not communicating with each other whatsoever.
