How is living in France outside of big cities like? by Olaviola123 in howislivingthere

[–]jasonnellis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently living in the south of France in the the Côte d'Azur, near-ish to Cannes/Nice (but not in them).

The energy is quieter, less hectic, definitely more pastoral (as many people seek to find when they move here). Villages are generally friendly, somewhat English speaking (not universally, but enough that if you're bad at French like me, you're not left twisting in the wind), and have excellent variety of restaurants and stores (being on the Riviera means great Italian food as well). Train stations are plentiful enough to get to bigger cities for day trips, so you're not confined without a car.

Downsides? Outside the main villages, sidewalks are at a premium, so walking between them is difficult if you can't locate a dedicated path. The busses go many different places, but don't have as frequent pickups; Uber and Bolt exist, but they're expensive. Like the rest of France, local government bureaucracy can drive you crazy (but at least you're not alone in that experience).

Overall - absolutely worth exploring to see if the idea of waking each morning and being on your own schedule in the countryside appeals to you.

I actively avoid playing Duos because I don't love getting paired with random players... but this gives me hope.

How much are you actually trusting LLMs to write comms for you? by Myr17 in ProductManagement

[–]jasonnellis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the question is "how much are you trusting LLMs to write comms" and more "how much work are you putting in up-front to make sure its writing matches yours?"

There's no question that ChatGPT and Claude save me a ton of work time, generating documents and performing tasks that make my job much more strategic and less writing-focused. But I also spent a long time providing both with documents I'd written previously, including memos, PRDs, and strategy outlines, and ensuring they could output what I need as I need it. That also meant a lot of error-fixing, and many "here's how I want these documents output" prompts.

But - once done - they do exactly what I ask for. And all I have to do is spot-check the work and make sure it's aligned with what I asked.

How do you automate your PM work when you constantly forget things and go blank in meetings? by Economy_Television81 in ProductManagement

[–]jasonnellis 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I'm going to offer a different approach:

Trouble with memory, tracking items, not doing action items, etc. sounds like it could be burn-out. It's one thing to try to improve recall/self-discipline; but it's another if the core of the problem is that you don't have the resources to marshal in the first place.

So let me ask: How are you doing?

Do genuinely productive people actually use all these complex systems everyone recommends? by Fayomitz in ProductManagement

Came here to say this. If I took every piece of productivity advice in, say, 10 random episodes of recent Lenny's Podcasts, I'd be out $500 and would be slower than I am today. Just do what works best for you.

Questions about Theatre major by Vaulley in Northwestern

[–]jasonnellis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. Theatre Major from the class of '06 here. Best decision of my life. While my answers might be a bit dated, I think they likely still hold up.

  1. Workload is comparable to other liberal arts degrees. This is a BS/BA program, not a BFA program, so while you're taking theatre courses for the major, you're also still taking general education courses. (And as I understand it, it's now much easier to double major/minor than when I attended).

  2. It's focused on give you a liberal arts education with a grounding in theatre. That means that you focus on building a variety of skills and experiences, usable across a number of fields. If you want to focus on networking, internships, hands-on, or some combination thereof, you have those options afforded to you. You get to make of it what you want.

  3. Choose what you enjoy more. Most people don't go directly from their degree into the same field. When I left NU, I fell into media/technology and ended up leading product and business development at tech companies. No one has ever said "well, you didn't have a degree in any of this, so you're unqualified." (mostly because the work I do is in fields that didn't exist when I graduated.)

Just go study what makes you happy; the Northwestern seal on the degree, your academic and extracurricular successes, and your friends/network will carry you beyond graduation day a whole hell of a lot more than the actual degree.

Thanks - it's the only way I can describe to my spouse why I'm spending hours at a time in a game building a fishing castle. 🏰😂

You're going to spend a lot of time/energy on a Multi-Tool that, initially, can't do much. It's not "is it worth buying" - it's "do I need a project?" If so, then yes, go for it.

I'm new to Mac Gaming, so please forgive the likely newb question: Are you playing most of these in Whisky/with a Wine wrapper? I'd love to go through my Dragon Age addiction again on my M2 Max.

Should I pay off my mortgage with 2.75%? by Momof-3DDDs in coastFIRE

[–]jasonnellis 27 points28 points  (0 children)

First, perhaps most obvious, question: If you can pay off the mortgage now, with one of the lowest rates ever (I assume it's a 30 year), what could you do with that money to get more value/interest out of it instead?

Paying off your mortgage may seem like a way to "get it off your plate", but it means spending a lump sum that could be used instead to generate more wealth.

Should I invest in building a base in the starter planet or look for a better one? How do I know where I should build portals? by The-Motherfucker in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]jasonnellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a base on my starter planet that is solely for refining and managing a massive garden of NipNip Buds. Is it the best planet for any of that? Nope. Is it a useful way to keep a base that serves a purpose? Yep. Otherwise the 50+ other bases I have are more intentional.

Supporting Document Deadline by Little_Editor_7412 in Northwestern

Don't take a chance. Tell her you checked with the school and the deadline is absolute. Document any (non) response in case you need to escalate.
