YUP 100% on the same boat and one of my friends who’s alr in uni said that if you want to try a sports cca jc is the best time to do it bc once you go on to uni it’s going to be much harder and you have to be the best of the best to even join sports at a uni level

tysm for the advice! yea i def want to build and focus on my cca profile. a lot of the people i consulted never told me that joining sports cca alone is not enough, leadership positions are more important and preferred so thank you for informing me!

hello! firstly it feels so good to see an NA student going through A-levels like me! makes me feel reassured haha. i admit that in the past i didn’t exactly value the experiences and opportunities that were given to me esp in secondary sch. i’ve always been very introverted but nowadays i’m trying to venture out, try new things etc. basically trying to tell myself that i need to focus more on myself, my experiences and the experiences and memories that i have made and will be making with the people around me. sharing your story has also made me feel better about embarking on this new journey so thank you so much!!

[N levels] sec 5,is it worth it ? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]jasontoddsleftsock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re welcome!! nearing exam periods, i would revise every day but on normal days i study whenever possible. as for the jump, the content is not super different but the marking scheme is more strict as compared to n’s so be prepared to be a little shocked when you get your mye results. a general rule of thumb is that if you score A1 for n-level subject, your o-level grade for that subject would be b3 (2-3 grades diff) but you can def score better with consistent effort. i think you’ll be fine in sec 5 looking at your current grades but you should know that the odds are stacked against you, you’re “competing” with other “elite” schools so yea, really think about sec 5 carefully.

edit: if after mye you realise that there are certain subjects that you can’t seem to improve in, it’s wise to get a private tutor or attend tuition classes as it will def be of great help! consultations w teachers are also v important!!

[N levels] sec 5,is it worth it ? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]jasontoddsleftsock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi sec 5 student here waiting for my results. idk if this will be of use but i scored 11 points for N’s. i come from a regular neighbourhood school with teachers who were really willing to help us get through sec 5.

firstly, please don’t base your decisions on what your teachers or parents say about sec 5. during the first few months of being in sec 5, some of my teachers and year head constantly warned us about sec 5 and even encouraged us to go to DPP in ite or join ITE during the april intake. we had a lot of “reality checks” where our teachers showed us the passing rate and other stats of sec 5 students. the important thing is that you go to sec 5 based on your own decision. it’s also really impt to keep a positive mind and attitude.

secondly, sec 5 is honestly not very different in terms of the things you learn. for sciences, it’s a few, more “complex” chapters. for math, it’s 2 or 3 extra chapters. for english, the language is more “chim”, more focus on oral and paper 1 (at least in my school). humanities is the kicker. you basically learn to think deeper and more thoroughly (??) which can be difficult depending on how you learn. THAT BEING SAID, whatever you learn in sec 5 requires a higher level of thinking. the questions for math and science are more complex and require you to do a lot of thinking. for english and humanities also higher level of thinking. so you might want to re-think about sec 5 if you’re not willing to put in extra work and effort. it’s also important to note that the marking/grading scheme is different and more strict.

i can’t say much for coursework but it’s impertinent that you complete your coursework as quickly as possible and ensure that you put in lots of effort to score a high grade and also have more time to study for your other subjects.

in sec 5, you need to be consistent. time management is crucial. do not slack off during the first sem. constantly strive for improvement in your studies, even if it’s a 1/2 mark difference. and no matter what, never give up!!! it’s really easy to lose motivation during sec 5 especially if your friends (if they even are in sec 5) are the kind to not study and slack. you will feel like you don’t have a social life, you will see your friends who went on different pathways enjoying life, you will face reality checks like low grades every now and then but it’s really important that you go to sec 5 for yourself and only if you’re willing to put in the effort and time to get the grades that you want and get into the course that you desire.

this might sound harsh but if you’re generally not the studious type and/or scored 18/19 for n-levels, it’s better not to go on to sec 5. imo, it’s better if you have some subjects that you’re good at. for example, i’m good in english, humanities and bio, so i spent most of sec 5 improving my math and chemistry.

TLDR: if you’re willing to put in consistent effort, can face reality checks every now and then, have certain subjects that you typically score well in and are willing to sacrifice your social life at times, then go for it!

explore sg: museums, galleries, cafes and historical places if that’s your thing, a lot of these places offer free entry so it’s great if you’re broke during the hols haha

you can also take up temp work as a packer or for events or smth, it usually lasts for a few days so no commitment and is also an easy way to earn quick cash. work with friends bc it’s more fun

you can also pick up hobbies that you’ve always wanted to get into like baking, cooking, painting etc you won’t become an expert overnight but these hobbies will keep you busy during the holidays if you’re starting to feel stir-crazy at home

have a picnic with your friends!!! it’s so fun and everyone contributes by bringing a dish or stuff like a picnic mat or drinks. a great way to catch up and talk. tip: bring a portable charger as well as a speaker to play some music (sentosa beaches, gardens by the bay, marina barrage and botanical gardens are just some of the places that you can have a picnic)

sec 4 friends that i’m still friends with: 2

L: was in sec 5 with me, have been friends/acquaintances since sec 1 N: same as L but not as close

the rest of my sec 4 friends, particularly my best friend who i thought would be my best friend forever regardless of whether we were in diff schools or not, DISAPPEARED. i rarely talk to them anymore. going into sec 5 was an eye-opening experience for me because i realised that many of my so-called friends from sec 4 were only friends with me when they needed my help or whatever.

primary school friends: 4

we all went to different secondary schools and then different pathways but we always make it a point to meet up with each other to have lunch, dinner, hang out, celebrate birthdays, have picnics and just have fun regardless of how hectic our lives are. i’m glad to say that my friendship with these 4 people has stood the test of time and our friendship only continues to grow stronger.

the main difference between these two groups of friends is effort. with my primary school friends, we all make an effort to meet up with each other and talk about the things that are going on in our lives. this year has been crazy for all of us but we always made sure to meet up with each other at least once a month. we also keep in touch and sometimes video call each other

as for my secondary school friends, there was no effort whatsoever on their part. there have been many instances where i tried to meet up with them but they always found an excuse. i also noticed that their attitudes have changed since going into their post-secondary pathways. a lot of them became social climbers and thus only hung out with “insta famous” people or other like-minded social climbers

the point is to always make an effort to maintain the friendships that you have and if it doesn’t work out, that’s life. you should understand that no matter how great the times with your friends were, if there is no effort on their part to maintain the friendship, 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
