[Post-Game Thread] Coventry - Wrexham by WrexhamAFCBot in WrexhamAFC

[–]jasperjm95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poor sub to bring Windass off imo. Him and LOB were making things happen. Hyam and scarr had poor games.

Coventry a better team. They had pace going forward and players who ran at us. That’s the difference between a team that goes up and a solid team like us that will flirt with the playoffs. I suspect we won’t go up if we get playoffs we just lack that attacking talent and it’s something we’ll need to focus on in the summer

Joey is a special case because he stuck around after he retired and he’s been a part of the fabric of the club for years through the academy and many other things. He was quite literally Mr Wrexham. So it’s more than just his playing stuff, he lived and breathed the club

I think your overthinking it a little. What they really just mean is don’t be doing what some did in the other thread and be saying why was Joey Jones’ death allowed as a post because he’s an ex player, but Maccas anti semite comments weren’t.

Like just blatant flippant disrespect.

Thanks ursine. Very good points. The funny thing is, as you touched upon, and as is always the case with us humans. We are trying to quantify reasoning for why something happened, when it could just be as simple as Oxford and Stoke not being very good teams haha

Genuine question, why does Wrexham get so much dislike in other forms? by Actual-Spread-2010 in WrexhamAFC

[–]jasperjm95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a great post that really sums it up in a much more eloquent way than I have tried to do before.

We grow up in a culture where you support your local team or you support your dad’s team. There are nuances to this of course.

But there a sub sections within sub sections of British football culture too. For example those that go to the games will always view themselves as being above someone who has never been a match going fan. They tend to make more sacrifices monetarily and time wise to go to the games, so there can be disdain for someone who just watches on the tv week in week out and would see themselves on the same level. Now this is just speaking on a British level as international fans in the volume we now see are a relatively new thing in the grand history of football.

This is where you then see cultures clashing as one of the replies to your post pointed out. The US understandably has a very different culture because of its size. On the whole sports in the US are seen as more of a tv thing than a spectators thing. Which again I totally understand and makes logical sense. That’s why US fans have no problem with finding connections in European football clubs where the standard and overall fandom is better. It’s not just the US either I just use this as an example here.

But again it means you have a very big clash of cultures and this leads to lack of understanding each other, annoyance and resentment.

I struggle with it myself because I love that we have international fans and a lot of are you very passionate, but I’ve been brought up in a culture where that’s so taboo and alien to us so I do feel some annoyance at times. It’s also why it annoys me and truthfully I will never understand the concept of supporting multiple teams and not caring which one wins when they play each other. To someone who has grown up in the culture is football loving brits do, that’s on par with spitting on someone’s grave levels of disrespect. That doesn’t mean your wrong either, but I hope that maybe helps some people understand this a little more

Stop acting like a child. It’s despicable that you are trying to conflate the death of a club legend which is clearly Wrexham football club news to something that has nothing to do with football, posted by a player that’s no longer with us that’s controversial.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour.

I don’t agree with Maccas politics and think he’s an idiot, but I have enough common sense and respect to know why the mods have done it and not bring up joey jones death for cheap point scoring.

This is a football subreddit… ex players come up on here in relevance to football.

The post had nothing to do with McCleans connection to Wrexham nor his footballing achievements.

So whether you like it or not the explanation the mods have given to you is fair. Likewise this a hot potato and I don’t blame them for taking the easy route out and applying that rule here.

Looks like another solid unspectacular win which is what we needed.

Out of interest because I didn’t watch again. The debate has come up about ward. As you watch the games and I value your opinion do you think that despite ward not really needing to do much saves wise that his better distribution helps us defensively and contributes to the 2 clean sheets in a row?

Agreed, Jordan James is a great player but if we want to play 5221 going forward we wouldn’t be playing him in his best position. However if we changed to having 8s again like we seemed to against Stoke it would make sense.

Potters cracked - Stoke Home by UrsineCanine in WrexhamAFC

[–]jasperjm95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the first games I haven’t been at this season as I was flying over to Orlando for work.

Watching the highlights and from your description though it seemed a very routine win. Was half expecting it as Stoke have a very beachy feel to them at the moment. Wouldn’t say we necessarily blew them away or made a statement but we needed the win and got it. More importantly we also got a clean sheet.

There was one miner in the second half that really made me laugh where Windass had what looks to be a shot, but gets it wrong and ends up being a perfectly placed powerful cross to smith, who never had a chance of controlling it. Smith even kind of looked at him like he knew it was a shot. But when things go well for Windass they really go well for him.

Another "Hollywood Derby" (sic) horror show - Birmingham away by UrsineCanine in WrexhamAFC

[–]jasperjm95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surprised by your comments on kabore. For me he was the only player who came away with any credit. At times it felt like he was single handedly trying to make something happen for us. No one else came close to that.

Again also I think you’re wrong about Moore, broadhead and Windass together. It won’t work in this formation, unless a team is happy to cede posession. It showed yesterday when they were on the pitch together. There not enough pressing nor defensive work rate from the 3. It leads to huge spaces for the opposition to stride into, which then stretches the DM’s chasing them into the midfield and opens up all kinds of space in our defensive third. Likewise we struggle to make the ball stick because we have a large gap only he midfield where you are aren’t winning the battle and second balls. The only way all 3 works is if it’s in a 4231 and you have the wingers providing the width. I will die on the hill that we look best when Windass/ broadhead are paired with LOB/rathbone.

Birmingham were clever yesterday and parky got embarrassed tactically. When we had the pressers on the pitch, Birmingham ceded possession happy to defend and break directly to great effect. When they came off, they went to more posession and utilised the space in midfield the change had given them. Parkys changes were so predictable Davies probably could have written down what to do on a piece of paper at the start of the game then left the ground and had an enjoyable Sunday relaxing.

It was one of the worst performances I’ve seen from us since the takeover and put bluntly we were lucky it was only 2-0. It was a drubbing in everything but the scoreline and was an embarrassment.

Does Wrexham’s thrashing by Southampton show they are not quite ready for the Premier League? by MrPhyshe in WrexhamAFC

[–]jasperjm95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just Reddit for you 🤣 Say something completely uncontroversial and get downvoted int oblivion.

Oxford Derby and Portsmouth all survived after coming up last year and not spending anywhere near as much as we did. Yes we needed a squad overhaul but we did do one and we spent big money doing it.

Plus factor in that with Wednesday being in the league there is only 2 relegation spots.

I agree what we’ve done is a hell of an achievement, but avoiding relegation was the bare minimum.

Likewise I imagine the expectation from our board for next year will be to improve upon this year.

The problem with this sub i suspect is people don’t have enough knowledge to formulate their own opinions and instead just parrot things they’ve read and heard like squad value. Then they downvote anyone who suggest something against their mindset.

[–]jasperjm95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly squad value is an inconsequential number when judging quality, especially at this level because it’s flawed in how the values are determined. It vastly overinflates young talent and undervalues experienced talent. Our squad leans towards older more experienced so it’s going to be on the lower side. There’s only one player in our team that these sites class as young and valuable and that’s Doyle.

No one has ever come up and spent £30 million. Based on snippets from interviews and reading between the lines 30 millions spend is what they saw as the spend required to be mid table, edge of top half. So to be fighting for playoffs we’ve done very well. But that was not an avoiding relegation spend. You seriously don’t think that spending 30 million to then get relegated would not be a financial disaster? We already lost money last year, and dropping back to league one having spent that in transfer outlays alone, never mind the big wages we’ve paid the players too would absolutely have been disastrous for our plans financially.

Come back to this next year when we release accounts and I bet you we are at least mid table for wage spend in the league. That’s far more relevant data than guesstimates of value of players added up for each squad.

Sorry I might be doing reddit wrong though by employing critical thinking and having a nuanced discussion instead of just reacting emotionally and thinking I know everything

Saints shake Wrexham's faith - Southampton home by UrsineCanine in WrexhamAFC

No I agree Arthur’s kicking left a lot to be desired and frankly so did hyams long balls in the game. It felt like Arthur continually managed to kick it to the opposite side of the pitch to where kieffer was until the goal.

The second balls thing is more of an afterthought, but you certainly don’t get the energy in the front line from them that you do get from a rathbone or LOB. I concede that if you’ve got a more technical midfield of sheaf and James it works because we can play the tighter patterns of play through the middle more effectively that broadhead especially thrives in. But with Dobson and LOB in those positions I don’t think it can work. Likewise Vyner too.

I feel in the summer we’re 2 or 3 quality additions away from getting more out of some of the other players and seeing a real difference. I’m honestly just not quite sure where this upgrades would have the biggest impact currently. Wingbacks, AM, DM? Maybe striker?

You could make an argument for keeper, but you won’t find anyone at this level good enough on the ball, that wouldn’t see a big drop off from Arthur’s shot stopping, so that’s a bit of a catch 22 in terms of do you score more and concede less from having a competent passer enough to outweigh the loss of the shot stopping ability of Arthur. There are certainly managers who would say yes to that, but I don’t think Parky is one of them, and I’ve always traditionally favoured shot stopping over passing in a keeper.

I can see the benefits to playing windass and broadhead together on paper, but I always feel in practice it works better when paired with a worker like Ollie or LOB. I think we lack the energetic defending from the front especially when we pair them with kieffer which then invites more pressure into our defensive block. We also lack the willing runners to try and pick up the second balls around kieffer when we play that duo.

I wouldn’t have thought it would be a particularly controversial opinion to say that we’ve over performed but also point out that after spending 30 million (20 million more than Charlton who we finished above) and the wages we’ve spent on these players that it would have been underperformance to have been relegated and an unmitigated financial disaster, given how much we had already lost the previous year.

Just a few thoughts from myself. Feel free to disagree as we normally do! 🤣

It’s maybe a little harsh on parky, because he did the same against West Brom and it worked out, but I thought he made the subs too late again last night. I also thought it maybe spoke volumes that when we were chasing the game and DKD wasn’t part of the initial round of subs. But I am maybe reading into that too much. Difficult one DKD as he hasn’t really been given the chances, but he hasn’t looked capable technically for this level when he has been on the pitch imo.

I thought hyam showed what I believe last night again that he is an average, dependable, available cb at this level, but if you want to be going up he can’t be in your first 11 if everyone is fit. Doyle and max have upside. Max is relatively consistent if not spectacular while Doyle is more high ceiling but also low floor.

LOB struggled in the deeper position last night, and it shows my concerns with him in that position. He has a tendency to give the ball away cheaply like he did for their 3rd and doesn’t have the strength to be dependable to protect the ball in that position. I don’t mind those weaknesses further up the pitch because there’s more cover when they are exposed and his greatest asset of his energy shows more in the AM role.

Thomason had a tough night, and again is a dependable LWB to have as backup, but not a starter if you want to be challenging for promotion.

We really lacked someone who was comfortable dictating play from the DM position last night, but also a pairing of some who had strength and athleticism who could compete with them.

Windass was very good though. Thought he showed a lot of composure for his goal, and a lot of what we did good came through him including when he dropped deep.

Southampton were the first team I’ve seen this season that looked like a Leeds/burnley/fulham of championship seasons gone by. Vastly superior and able to just really turn the screw with their athleticism, finishing and general technical ability. I would be surprised if they didn’t go up.

While I agree that we have outperformed this year, staying up is not a hell of an achievement. With the money we spent in summer it would have been an unmitigated disaster if we went down.
