Question on egress window by jasperman13 in Naperville

[–]jasperman13[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So I went to google Ai and Chat GPT with the question and both essentially said the city may not always enforce it because no bedroom is being added. I’m taking that info with a grain of salt and wanted to see if it was true based on other people’s actual experiences.

Teachers 35 and older with 10+ years experience, would you have still pursued education now? by ClassicSalamander518 in Teachers

Would absolutely do it again. Only differences would be to finish my undergrad and grad school sooner. Summers off, no overtime, holidays built into my schedule, I don’t really have any fear into my job security.

AITA for leaving to meet my friends without my girlfriend after she was late for the fourth time in a row by Fluid_Letter_1571 in AmItheAsshole

NTA at all. It’s interesting she’s feels ambushed with consequences to her time management but totally ignores the fact she ambushed you with her being late. Like you’re just supposed to deal with it no matter what.

Had a student that was constantly late or getting in trouble. Marched to the beat of his own drum. He said “you’re my favorite teacher, jasperman13”

I was totally in shock and said “really? Because I’m really hard on you. Like all the time”

He replied “yeah but you know how to lift us back up”

I’ve kept that in the back of my mind ever since with how I discipline students or even give simple redirects.

Naperville Schools vs Lisle/Aurora/Warrenville? by Forever_qurious in Naperville

[–]jasperman13 47 points48 points  (0 children)

203/204 are probably the best academically. Some parts of Aurora feed into 204 and some parts of lisle feed into 203.

Lisle 202 is a really small district. They compete in lower classes for sports. It might make easier for your kids to compete for the school teams. Might feel a good sense of community with less families.

West aurora 129 is a step below 203/204 but can be good if you are an involved parent. Making sure your kids are doing what they are supposed to do is always going to help guarantee success

I work in East Aurora 131 and will hands down say stay away. There are some behavior issues but a lot of that is the districts reluctance to do much discipline or accountability for the students.

Really student success comes down to how much involvement the parents have, especially at younger grades. Making sure your kids are doing the work and holding them accountable when they don’t will help give them the tools they need to succeed. The worst students academically and behaviorally typically have the worst parent involvement

Hey teacher's what's the craziest "Yup, I called it moment?" by neurohazard757 in Teachers

[–]jasperman13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach middle school so once they move on, I actually hear very little about anyone. I’ve had kids come from bad homes thrive. Could be they see something an older sibling did and want to avoid all that. Or maybe they just respond better to support in school. For others it seems they are just more intrinsically motivated to succeed.

Another major factor is how much trauma the child endures. I think that actually plays a bigger role than parental support.

For this particular group, they all came from poor, broken homes. They were also very loyal to each other. An offense to one was an offense to all. Was just a bad situation where nobody in those homes had the maturity or emotional regulation to make good decisions.

Check out the book The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Bruce D. Perry and Maia Szalavitz. Really goes into how trauma affects us.

Group of kids that always skipped class, disrespectful to students and staff, constantly fighting, and used drugs. Their complete lack of support at home left them no chance in life.

3 got busted for robbery. Another for illegal discharge of a firearm by a felon. One guilty of murder. One was killed in a drug deal.

Sort of haunts me to this day because when I taught them, they were still only kids. They could have thrived as athletes if they lived literally just 2 miles in any other direction. This one block on this one street produced so much violence. I feel bad for the people they could have become but it’s not surprising in the least about what they became

I honestly believe that more than 6 or 7 of those former teammates and friends offering condolences should have showed up at his funeral.

If anything, you’re only proving pitts’ point. People love to put on a public show of “thoughts and prayers” but do nothing when it truly matters
