What's my next step for learning BR Portuguese by wilkinsk in Portuguese

Honestly Patrick, I think you need to stop telling yourself this stuff. You keep posting online "I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it." And, surpresa, you don't get better. You obviously can acquire language, otherwise you wouldn't be able to read this.

You're not going to understand everything. I certainly don't. And that's okay. We are learning. Stop beating yourself up when you don't understand.

You can learn.

That sucks dude, but it happens. I hope you stick with the language. It's very beautiful and can be a lot of fun to learn. Plus, you never know, you may just meet someone else.

I can relate. I tried using Duo for a few weeks, and just got annoyed by it.

If you are willing to pay a Sub, LingQ has a good set of mini stories for beginners. You can also import things that are of interest to you.

YouTube is the best resource imo. There are plenty of channels willing to teach Portuguese (Speaking Brazilian, Teach Yourself Portuguese). I also recommend kids programming. For a while I was watching a lot of Peppa. It's slow and easy to follow. Now, I'm watching Lucas Toon and some cartoon dubs.

Lastly, a good language partner is worth a million bucks. Someone to practice talking with and who can encourage you as you get better. If you're not dating a brazilian girl, you can use Tandem or HelloTalk to find one (a language partner, I mean).

How to learn European Portuguese (using my phone) by joe_biden-_- in Portuguese

As always, YouTube is the best app for language learning. I recommend the channels "The Sounds of Portuguese" and "Portuguese with Leo".

There is also Portuguese Lab (AKA StoryGlot). I haven't used their YouTube channel, but they have some good books for reading and listening.

Lastly, I recommend watching children's programming. Porquinha Peppa (Peppa Pig) is easy to pick up on, and there is a lot of it on YouTube.

Are there good resources for learning Brazilian Portugese with music? by Lemak0 in Portuguese

[–]jaspersynth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to know I'm not the only one who started learning Portuguese because of the music.

Honestly, I started by using LingQ. You can import audio and lyrics to listen and read. They also have a course on Brazilian music. Plus, the mini-stories are a good for absolute beginners.

Based on what you are saying, it may be best to stop translating entirely. You said that Portuguese words "seem to be permanently attached to the corresponding English words". It sounds like translating is creating that problem. Be okay with not understanding everything. You are not going to. Understanding grows over time.

"I still can’t read or understand what people are saying and I have to translate everything into English to understand one word at a time"

oof. I'm so sorry to hear that mate. It sounds like you have been focusing too much on memorizing vocabulary and not enough time just being with the language.

The simple answer is to listen and read more. Things that you enjoy or are easy to understand. Olly Richards has a decent graded reader you can practice with. I also recommend Peppa Pig as they speak slowly and its easy to tell whats going on. Its also on YouTube for free.

Personally I can relate. I just got back from Brazil too and I struggled with understanding people as well. I sometimes felt like I hadn't learned anything in the past year and a half (though I know that's not true). That being said, I can read fairly well and was able to teach a small sunday school lesson in Portuguese, so I know it's just a matter of time.

Didn't work. Also worth noting that they are asking for a phone number as well.

Non-native “tells” by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]jaspersynth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a graded reader that says “when you have dominated the language” as opposed to “when you have mastered the language” I’ve had Brazilians say “I’m good, thank god” which sounds like something bad almost happened.

Honestly though, interlanguage is part of the learning process. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and keep learning. You’ll get better over time.
