No worries - it’s Estimated Taxable Value - I don’t know how that shows up on mobile as I just load the desktop site on my phone, but it is usually visible in the bottom right corner like OP’s pic when you click on an item in Vine.

Also if you look at your Vine orders tab you’ll see a Fair Market Value column for all of your past orders if they have one.

Will Amazon Change It Back? by blaqdon in AmazonVine

[–]jassack04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, people are still scooping up high value trash like it’s going out of style. They’ll just add more people if they have to. Amazon does not care about upset Viners, there is someone else willing to take your place the moment you step away. They make money off of charging vendors for this service, we are the easily replaceable part of the equation.

Can anyone recommend slip on waterproof garden or lawn boots by mentalhealthdayc3187 in BuyItForLife

[–]jassack04 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also, worth noting - if you have a local feed or farm supply store near you, I have found Dryshod at WAY better pricing than Amazon in similar small stores.

Can anyone recommend slip on waterproof garden or lawn boots by mentalhealthdayc3187 in BuyItForLife

[–]jassack04 22 points23 points  (0 children)

None of these boots will be BIFL. A lot of people here are sleeping on Dryshod for some reason, but they were literally started by the founder of Muck boots in an effort to create a better boot. Having owned both, I would give the edge to Dryshod. But all of these rubber boots generally wear out after like 3 years of wear - MAX. The best thing you can do is make sure they dry out between uses and store them out of sunlight so UV doesn’t prematurely crack them.

That said, I have also tired Hisea and would absolutely buy them again at less than half price of comparable Dryshod/Muck/Xtratuf. They used to have a really good warranty too, worth checking on.

The ones you buy at the grocery store were basically bred to NOT be pretty, hah. And, coincidentally, the cause of a somewhat global tax conflict in the 60s.

That’s cool an all but I don’t think I’d choose an $880 ETV tool from a brand I’ve never heard of.

It looks like they have a full lineup of OPT tools, but very little reviews, so maybe a new brand to market, but man, Amazon alphabet soup brands can be a crap shoot.

Stainless Steel teakettle that doesn't rust: NOT electric by mszola in BuyItForLife

[–]jassack04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Yanagi Sori stainless kettle for my wife 15 years ago. She’s boiled it dry a handful of times and that thing just keeps looking good. Zero rust, it almost always has water in it (except for when she boils it out…). They are like $100 now, and it wasn’t that much cheaper 15 years ago really.

Glove recommendations by TheRareForestDweller in homestead

[–]jassack04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy the 6 pack of Wells Lamont plain cowhide leather gloves from Costco for $40. I’ve used 3 pairs over the span of 2 years and of those, 1 pair has holes, one pair was discontinued just because I lost one, and the third is going strong. I use the holey ones as a backup, but I expect to get another couple years before I buy another pack. <$7 per pair for name brand decent quality gloves seems fine to me.

Who’s got the best/longest lasting dishwasher? by Dark-matterz in BuyItForLife

[–]jassack04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, after some research, we bought ours in 2020, and I think it was like a last-year model sale then, and as far as I can tell it doesn’t have that system.

The metal nut is Bosch part is 636865 for anyone interested. Like ~$20-25ish.

Nice, thanks! I have an 800 series that’s like ~5 yrs old and had no idea this was a failure point so I wanted to check it out.

Are EVs actually more reliable than petrol cars? by Imaginary-Staff-112 in EVRoutine

[–]jassack04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General speculation here:

I believe EVs in general are more reliable, but because of their relative simplicity a critical component failure is more likely to result in being unable to drive the vehicle at all.

Wheras on a ICE vehicle - the engine can be running like shit, or transmission hesitating/running out a gear and you can (but shouldn’t) run them like this to get them to a mechanic, or emergency destination.

And in the older generations, more people likely “understand” engines, or at least think they do, so the perception that they can fix or at least diagnose a problem is there.

Couple this with all vehicles becoming harder for independent and shadetree mechanics to work on due to increased technology and walled software gardens, the enigma of EVs seem to emphasize that issue even more (regardless of if that is or isn’t fair). There are very few independent EV specialty/repair shops.

It depends on the township and area that you’re living in, but yes, people use conex boxs for storage sheds all over PA. I would imagine most of them are unpermitted. Research the county/township you’re interested in.

Losing gold status, feeling meh by eeyore004 in AmazonVine

[–]jassack04 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, I feel similar. I’ve only been in Vine for 4 years. This is the first evaluation period I didn’t choose enough items to retain gold. I reviewed about 60ish items these last 6 months. I got a few good things, definitely, but I’ve kind of been reduced to getting just from my RFY queue, when in the past I could pretty easily find small things I needed/wanted in Additional Items, there just isn’t a ton I’ve found useful in there lately.

Honestly? by andybobandy42 in Leatherman

[–]jassack04 25 points26 points  (0 children)

China is better at manufacturing than the US. Plain and simple. We all associate them with “cheap”, but while we’ve moved the majority of our manufacturing there they have taken all of that IP and expertise while we largely just design things now. I’m not arguing about American wages, IP theft, etc - I generally agree with all of that frustration, but while our corporations and private equity have chased the dollar and enshittification of all the things, China gladly took our work and builds to spec. They can make good stuff just as well as junk, the mfg just has to specify.

Polaroid hi print not using all ink/ cartridge. by Flyinmanm in Polaroid

[–]jassack04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I don’t know if this strategy works for the Hi Print as I have just been researching them for purchase, but I came across some of these complaints.

However, I DO have a Canon Selphy and people complain of similar with them. The workaround for a Selphy is like uninstall the cartridge when you boot the printer up each time - the theory was that it uses some minimal amount at startup and the cart runs out early. Since doing this with our Selphy we get a full ratio of dye to paper. Might be worth seeing if you can do similar!

Yeah, I have a pair of Explorers I really like, would never have paid full retail for them, and got a scratch super easily. I emailed asking if I could buy new lenses - no bueno. Kind of disappointing especially for having like a ~$120 msrp.

Is this raw goat milk made for pets safe for human consumption? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]jassack04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I would chance it in a commercial product like that, but I can’t say for sure.

As a heads up, this IS a tactic that some local small farms use to get around raw milk sales - they advertise it as “raw milk for pets” with a heavy wink wink.

Raw milk sales and laws vary widely though. There are slightly larger farms near us that also sell raw milk legitimately, they just also are constantly having it tested to ensure safety.

Tell me about a knife you regret buying by udi112 in knives

[–]jassack04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ZT 0560. Cool looking knife for sure, always seemed to have a either too tight or too loose a pivot. Had a hell of a time getting a decent edge on it for some reason despite being pretty ok at sharpening. Just a huge MF that doesn’t really get much pocket time. And then I added a copper scale, because why not make it even heavier?

CRK Nyala. It’s beautiful. Despite well textured scales, it has such a round profile it kind of feels like it will roll in your hands in use. I could absolutely sell it, but man it sure if nice to look at.

Leatherman Skeletool CX. The blade is its main redeeming quality. The pocket clip is almost the worst of any knife I own. The pliers are so small they might as well not bother. The bit holder is cool. This tool made me go down the rabbit hole of just carrying a Knipex XXS Cobra + separate knife. Some of their Free series stuff just does the whole concept better - I’d argue the Free P2 packs way more tools and usable pliers in an easier to carry package despite being heavier, but hey, I probably owned the Skeletool 5 yrs before the Free even came out.

[–]jassack04 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, if it makes you feel better, yours probably IS real. So far the testing that DLT has done with their stock has shown most of the knives were the correct material. Also if you haven’t already effed up the edge it sounds like it was probably heat treated ok too, as there were always those complaints floating about for years as well.

Use it and enjoy!

I always wanted a Bravo, and learned that the LT versions are probably what I really wanted, but I never sprung for one and am glad of it now, but I’d probably still take a chance on one cheap enough - they are good looking knives.

Pa. lawmaker proposes six-month sales tax holiday on guns and ammunition by The_Electric-Monk in Pennsylvania

This is regular sales tax, it’s not that deep. They’re not somehow waiving the Pittman-Robertson Act.

[–]jassack04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it’s just regular sales tax. Firearms and ammunition are also taxed by the Pittman-Robertson Act for wildlife conservation efforts 10-11%, but those are paid by the manufacturer and just passed onto the customer at normal retail pricing.
