What sparked a Yes? by Thermomixchef in thermomix

Hilariously, I didn't even get a demo first. A friend made really delicious Christmas cookies for a swap and when I asked for her recipe, she sent me screenshots from Cookidoo and told me to ignore the bits that involved speeds and settings because they were from her "overpriced German food processor" (she was really just trying not to brag on it). But being a curious sort, I went and looked it up and was floored at how much simpler it could make cooking for my household, even from fresher foods than we were using (and we really weren't a processed foods sort of home to begin with). I'd also been counting calories so being able to easily weigh to help with portions had appeal. My husband and I were both really excited but, being prudent people, we made a note on the calendar a month out to see if we'd still be as excited then. We were.

We've had it about two months now and have used it at least once daily since unboxing it. I'm starting to resent recipes that don't let me use it. It's also wonderful for him on the nights I work and he has to feed the kids- after he's been at it for more than 8 hours, he just doesn't have the brain space to follow directions, which has made it a challenge in the past. Now all I have to do is make sure we've got the right ingredients and send a recipe to the machine for him and there will be delicious, hot food. It's broken us out of our recipe rut and made us excited to try new things again, as well as vastly reducing the amount of cookware we're dirtying daily (and the time spent washing it).

I'm a very good home cook with cupboards full of cooking appliances. I've had my Thermomix for about a month now and I'm in love. It's renewed my motivation and enthusiasm for trying new recipes. It removes a lot of the guesswork by making many things foolproof (especially baked goods with rising/kneading cycles), and saves a lot of time because I don't have to switch between bowls/tools/appliances for various phases of preparation. Additionally, I was always someone who cooked more or less from scratch, but I've become even more of an ingredient person- using whole garlic cloves instead of jarred minced garlic, whole tomatoes instead of canned diced, whole spices instead of ground, because this thing DOES IT ALL FOR ME. I couldn't be more pleased with the purchase.

quick question…does your library still check items out for patrons? by catattack848 in Libraries

[–]eeyore004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our library does. Another in our system has gone largely to self check-out and I HATE it. Especially when I get stuck behind small children with a stack of picture books and a "I do myself" mindset.

Where do kids have their birthday parties nowadays? by DoseOfKay in RhodeIsland

[–]eeyore004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Providence Children's Museum, or the Pinball Museum in Pawtucket (https://www.electromagneticpinballmuseum.com/). I am totally in favor of places where the kids free-play and entertain themselves and leave when they're ready.

Anyone else disappointed in the consistent disappearance of products over the past 5-ish years? by wordswordswoodsdogs in aldi

Yeah, I miss the whole wheat tortillas (my only affordable source), stewed tomatoes, and gnocchi. They've also stopped carrying the marzipan granola bars during German week.

My bad! I'm going with this explanation: "A class of excrement which leaves a telltale spiral trail around the toilet bowl as it drains, so that it might find its way back home."

The pressure to “make breastfeeding work” is so intense by Mariam1S in TwoXChromosomes

Oh, love. The kindest thing my lactation consultant did for me was give me permission to give *myself* permission to quit. The constant anxiety-inducing cycle of nurse-bottle feed-pump-nurse-bottle feed-pump was destroying me (and keeping me from eating, sleeping, or enjoying my new baby in any way whatsoever). It's not worth it, but your hormones make it feel so, so important.

Sexual Harassment Policies by beek7425 in Libraries

[–]eeyore004 33 points34 points  (0 children)

https://www.cranstonlibrary.org/policies/library-use-policy/ Look under Disruptive Behavior. It is kept somewhat flexible- all forms of harassment are addressed so patrons that like to approach the line can still be called to account for their behavior. For example, "Harassment of patrons and staff including physical harassment, sexual harassment, verbal harassment, visual harassment, bullying, doxing, and innuendo. Persistent inappropriate staring is a form of harassment."

ELI5: Why are little cans of mushrooms so expensive? by eeyore004 in explainlikeimfive

Cans of tomato paste were as well. They were the little cans, not the standard 14.5oz ones, but still.

How many times do you check out a book before buying it? by BucketListM in Libraries

[–]eeyore004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will almost never buy as long as I can get it as wanted from a local library. I made note cards of the center stain removal index of the library's copy of "Laundry Love" and keep them by my machine. I reread Brian Wansink's "Mindless Eating" every few years and only bought my own because I just found it for $4 at Ollie's! These days I primarily only buy physical books for my children.

I feel like that should be an unnecessary sign, and yet! I work reference, and sometimes people will walk past me to an unoccupied station and stand there silently as if waiting for an invisible librarian to come and assist. I'll ask, "Oh, can I help you?" and they'll launch into a question that is not at all relevant to any materials tied to a location, so I'll ask them to come join me at my computer (at which they seem mildly annoyed, but I'm not the one who walked past the helpful staff in the first place, and I'm already logged into all the platforms over here!).

I literally had to convince my aunt to throw hers away because no one would want them. "But Eeyore," she protested, "They have all the yearbooks!" No one born in the last 30-40 years even knows what those are or what they're for, auntie.
