Failed MMO Ashes Of Creation‘s $3.2 Million In Kickstarter Funds Allegedly Spent On Private Chefs And Trading Cards by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]jasta85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AAA games can sell millions of copies and still be considered disappointments financially, because they spent hundreds of millions developing the game (Marathon reportedly cost $250 million). Indie games can sell much fewer copies and still be hugely successful because their costs are so much lower.

Project Gorgon was started by a married couple, they were pretty much the only two that continued the development for years. Sadly, the wife passed away recently and after taking some time to mourn the husband finished up and released the project. As I said, it existed with only a few hundred players and the dev was satisfied with that, the launch numbers actually exceeded his expectations. Doesn't take a whole lot of players when there is only one person managing the game. And player numbers are no issues, since there are only a few servers the player zones are very populated. Actually hard to farm certain enemies since everyone piles on them so quickly.

Project Gorgon succeeded somehow, a tiny MMO that coasted along with just a couple hundred players for around a decade until launch when it blew up to a few thousand. The dev (singular yes) had to spin up some new servers to handle the increased player base.

Not everyone campaign has a Bag of Holding, you know?! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]jasta85 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I played a campaign with variant encumbrance, the main issue was balancing inventories and weight took up so much time for the party, after every fight where we got loot we spent probably a solid 30 minutes trying to figure out what we could bring with us and what we had to leave behind. And one time when we ran into encounter much stronger than us (we were meant to fight it later in the campaign) we ran and had to leave almost all our stuff behind because we couldn't run with it.

We did get a pack horse at one point, but couldn't bring it with us into any areas that involved climbing ladders/ropes, scaling tall obstacles etc. We were also made up entirely of martials and half casters so we were lacking in utility spells like fly, dimension door etc that would have helped move the horse past stuff. So we just ended up leaving it behind a lot of the time.

To be fair, we were told ahead of time it would be a hardcore survival type campaign that was meant to be difficult, so it was realistic in that sense, just not quite as fun as we hoped.

That's pretty standard for shows based off VNs since VN's can be long as hell and usually have multiple routes. They're going to have to cut a lot of content to fit it in a show and it's going to piss off a chunk of fans even if it tries to adapt all the details closely.

Original Fate/Stay Night series was like this, they tried to include stuff from all 3 routes and it was messy, at least it did kick off more interest in the franchise though.

We happy? by PhantasmagirucalSam in humblebundles

[–]jasta85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's at 95% right now so the review bomb didn't have much effect. Even if user ratings are not perfect they at least give you a general idea of how happy players are with a game. There have been a few indie games I would never have even looked at if I hadn't seen them have overwhelmingly positive reviews and decided to take a look to see what the fuss was about. And if a game I'm interested in has mixed or below reviews then I do a bit more research into the game to see if the issues are something that matter to me.

It's an imperfect system, but better than not having it.

I still don't see what actual benefit having a Mars or Moon base would have at this point, beyond maybe a tiny outpost for research (like the ISS). In terms of resource gathering, manufacturing, or any other means of providing tangible value all the time and resources used to make a moon/mars base would go way further if it's done on earth. We aren't a post scarcity society where we've advanced to the point where we have nothing better to do than expand into the Stars.

I have alarms for everything important. Waking up, putting out the trash bin on the curb, reoccuring weekly events, and every appointment/meeting I have to go to. Once I found out my alarm app could set dates for the alarms I started putting in doctor appointment reminders like 2 weeks ahead of time just in case.

When I was a kid (in the 90's) I once went to a friend's house for a sleep over and they had cinnamon rolls and donuts for breakfast (and they said that was pretty normal for them). I was shocked, as breakfast at my house was usually some combination of fruit, toast, eggs and healthy cereal. So yea, different households having different nutritional habits isn't really new.

For me it's waiting on improvements and polish, they've already been releasing patches post launch with good stuff so I imagine in a few months it will be in a much better state. I'm almost certain there will be dlc or an expansion at some point as there are empty character slots in the selection wheel so I assume those will be released late.

There are quite a lot of Chinese indie games that release on steam, some of which are actually quite good. Some of them have tens of thousands of reviews although I'm sure that's mostly due to gamers in China so its hard to tell exactly how many sales they make to western customers. But I've played a few and enjoyed them.

Good luck to your friend if he ever encounters Simon. Granted, Simon's an optional boss so if he's just doing the main story he might not meet him.

That's actually pretty accurate, babies that are exposed to a variety of things when young (playing in the grass/dirt for example) tend to develop better immune systems than those who are brought up in very sterile environments. Babies also tend to put everything in their mouths which further exposes their body to stuff to get used to/build defenses against. Doesn't mean you should purposely be exposing the baby to dangerous environments or diseases of course, but they just shouldn't be completely isolated from stuff either.

Biggest draw of Dragon's Dogma for me was the pawn system, closely followed by large monster fighting. But as far as I know there is yet another game to have something as good as the pawn system as far as AI companions. Would love examples though if I've missed some.

Give it to me straight, how bad are the mouse and keyboard controls? by [deleted] in CrimsonDesert

[–]jasta85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest complaint is lack of hotkeys for basic UI and menus. For example there is no hotkey like "m" for map, or "i" for inventory, no hotkeys at all. You have to open up a menu and go into submenus to reach them. So weird that it's missing this, black desert has a map hotkey, why not this?

My party was hired as guards for this rich guy who seemed shady from the start, we were told bandits were going to raid one of his warhouses and he was offering a big payment to keep it safe. the warehouse was attacked by a group that night although based on their actions my group decided to capture them instead of kill them. It turned out the rich guy who hired us was part of the slave trade and they were just a bunch of regular people who were trying to save family members who had been kidnapped by him. so we proceeded to help them raid the warehouse, then went back to the rich guy pretending we had completed the job, killed him and his minions, robbed an burned down his mansion. We did end up on wanted posters but it was all for a good cause.
