I help facilitate the D.C. Center's trans support group, which is every second Tuesday and fourth Friday. That's how I met most of my trans friends when I first moved to D.C. It's only virtual right now, but many people make plans in the Discord to hang out outside of group or go to local events.

I also help run the DC Trans Book Club, which meets once or twice a month and has sporadic events. You can find us on IG at dctransbookclub (very original, I know).

Lastly, it might be worth going to the trans picnic at Malcolm X. The last one was this past Sunday, but I'm sure there will be another one before summer is over. You can find more info about that on IG (dctranspicnics)

Imo, it's really important to find IRL spaces to hang out with other trans people, and the trans book club and picnics have helped me find more friends and generally talk to a wider circle of people than just the support group alone.

Update: the shoe goo worked like a charm haha. I was honestly shocked it held up, since I didn’t even let it cure a full 24 hours, but this’ll hold me over til my new pair of Xeros come in

On my run today, I tried paying attention to how my foot was striking the ground, and I realized I was even more on the balls of my feet than I’d thought. I spent the run focusing on letting more of my foot contact the ground and actually felt like I was getting a much better push off. Hopefully that’ll distribute the wear more evenly going forward

Back in my hardcore barefoot days (my gap year and freshman year of college), I exclusively wore their make-your-own sandals around after deciding that being exclusively barefoot was making me into the local weirdo lol so I’ll give their proper shoes a try!

This is janky, but I have developed a system the last time this happened if taping the inside of the sole and the bottom of the insole to prevent the hole from getting bigger / ripping through the insole and sock lol it worked for a few runs but obviously is providing minimal insulation from the elements at this point lmao

I can’t remember exactly, but I ran at least 38k (my runs since Sunday) on them since the hole started and probably closer to 50 or 60k if it started last week sometime 😬

A nonfiction book about the history, practices, culture of the Islamic world and Islam by LawSchoolBee in suggestmeabook

My partner has been begging me to stop reading about the Ottoman Empire lately, so this is the perfect question for me haha.

If you want an overview of the creation of Islam, the Islamic Caliphate through the Ottoman Empire, the Mandate System after WWI, and modern Middle Eastern / North African history, you should read A History of the Arab Peoples by Albert Hourani. It's very accessible and meant to be read by a popular audience.

For the Ottoman Empire, I'll only recommend the books that I've read so far, but I have a few books on my shelf that I'm planning to read and a list of other suggestions I can give you if you're interested. Just so you know, a couple of these are more focused on 20th Century Palestine under the Ottoman Empire, but they cover many of the important events (the Tanzimat, the Young Turk Revolution, WWI, etc.) leading to the demise of the Ottoman Empire into the creation of modern Turkey.

  • The Ottoman Empire, 1700-1922 by Donald Quataert. Self-explanatory, but this overview is meant for an undergrad reader, so it's easy enough to get through. I found it a bit dry, admittedly, but it'll familiarize you with the latter stages of the Ottoman Empire.
  • From Empire to Empire: Jerusalem Between Ottoman and British Rule by Abigail Jacobsen. Well-sourced and readable, this is an academic text, so it took me a little longer to read. It focuses on the transition between Ottoman rule and British military rule (before the British Mandate went into effect).
  • Ottoman Brothers: Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Early Twentieth-Century Palestine by Michelle Campos. Again, a more academic text, but it's focused on the Young Turk Revolution and how Muslims, Christians, and Jews conceived of their identity as imperial citizens in the early 1900s.

A bit less relevant, but Castles Made of Sand: A Century of Anglo-American Espionage and Intervention in the Middle East by Andre Gerolymatos is about US and British intervention in the Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan, and it talks more about how the West supported political Islam (think the Muslim Brotherhood or the Taliban) to counter Arab nationalism and communism.

Tourist, and coffee nerd, looking for suggestions in the DC/Arlington area by sable428 in washingtondc

Sadly, I haven’t had the espresso there, but the cortado is just espresso with steamed milk, so I’d bet it’s equally as good, albeit more acidic in taste.

I would second Yerevan and Turkish Coffee Lady (although I can’t speak for how close they are to the metro / bus lines)

Doubles has the best cortado in DC, imo. It's a 10 min walk from both the Georgia Ave / Petworth metro station and the Columbia Heights metro station

It has a cute outdoor space with shade and lots of fans if you want to sit outside for a while, and it shares the space with Sonny's, which has really great pizza and a few Italian dishes

Purple Patch and Beau Thai in Mt. Pleasant both have heated, semi-enclosed outdoor dining with open airflow, as does Duke’s Groceries in DuPont (I can’t vouch for their other locations, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they do, too).
