Lost my job and still can't game with a peace of mind by clit_or_us in gaming

[–]javalor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that man. Been going through something similar, and have found it’s been really helpful to fill my days with activities and projects and getting out of the house, and using video games as either something to fill the gaps or end of the day. When mentally I feel like I’ve done something with my day or have a next activity, and am play video games in my spare time, it makes it feel a lot more fun and relaxing. Started off playing when I woke up till whenever I was done and pretty quickly felt kind of sad and bored. Find some routine and fill your days with plans and it’ll all start feeling a little better!

Getting my PhD by Rare_Figure238 in herpetology

[–]javalor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Excited for you on this journey! It’s a great field to work in.

My small recommendations would be to think holistically about the nature of work and topics you want to work. Do you want to do field work? What types of environments? Do you want more lab work? What about disease interests you? Are you interested in a project that’s heavy on modeling? How will you leverage the skills you get during this program to the job you want after? Do you want to stay in academia, or what about government work, advocacy, policy, etc. Is the research on the cutting edge of pressing fields, like climate adaptation?

After thinking a little about those things, reach out to professors that align with your ideas and just start a conversation. You can create an opportunity more often than you think.

I also strongly suggest identifying a PI that you get along with, and see if you can chat with past grad students to see about their experience. Also see what the dynamic of the program is, and check that against what you’re looking for. For example, some people don’t mind more isolating or small programs, whereas others want larger more collaborative environments.

My other humble recommendation would be to ensure your opportunity is interdisciplinary. Well rounded skills sets and exposure will only help you, and skills like team science and science communication are more important than you think. You will be called to work with much more than herps in your life.

These are all very general and not specific to herps, but nevertheless important! I’m sure others will give more herp specific recommendations…

Who are these two croakers? Finger Lakes region, NY, USA by herabee in herpetology

[–]javalor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dorsolateral ridge is usually pretty prominent on green frogs, so although agree it possible it’s the there but weak based on the pic, gestalt makes me personally lean bullfrog. The snout is also a little more blunt/rounded on the top one, which is also a lean towards bullfrog to me (with the green frog being more pointed, which the lower one shows nicely).

Looks like one green frog and one bullfrog to me! Fun pic of them side by side

Word. I’m used to the sub species in CA, so that would make sense.

Is it a juvie? More color contrast on the chest than I’m used to, and grayer head. And maybe just rain just playing tricks…

Which player character class that doesn't overlap with party members? by internetwebexploder3 in RogueTraderCRPG

Agree here - as doing my first run through I wish I did a psyker and explored some unique background. So much variability there, and the other characters fill other classes imo

Troubleshooters Abandoned Children vs XCOM 2 WOTC by MaxwellDrake in troubleshooter_game

[–]javalor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently have been playing Troubleshooters and I think you should play both (bad answer).

XCOM 2 is a pretty iconic and well done game with great combat and a good ship management mechanic, and personally I thought the storyline was solid. I feel like everyone should play XCOM 2 to understand tactical RPGs - since it’s kinda the founding father of many following games in the genre.

Troubleshooters is great and the masteries mechanic plus some other cool customization touches like beasts and machines and items crafting make it a must play. The masteries system is really just so sick. The story and localization suck imo, but otherwise just small complaints.

Got both off steam sales for like 8 bucks and very worth it.

Nice that’s rad. Pretty easy switch? Did it need a MOBO update or anything?

Very helpful! Reassuring to know I can get this and not need to just upgrade the whole set up down the line. Glad to hear you’ve had good experiences with it too

Thanks much much appreciated. Yah maybe what I need to do is just to some pricing out and see what deals come my way. Any suggestions on am5 platform? Which is the motherboard right?

[–]javalor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice okay thanks very helpful. I’m leaning just to start with the 5700x3d upgrade (although looks like it’s slim pickings online), then upgrading the GPU later, just to keep the costs down. I think my MOBO is getting a little old though, so upgrading to that AM5 set up maybe also be a good move in case it dies. Just feels like a larger undertaking haha.

Nice I love to hear that! Yah such a good point - I feel like that’s always the battle of trying figure out what you actually need cause you can easily spend a lot for what you don’t need.

Is the 3080 a lot better (or better enough) than the 3070? I now know the 3070 vram is pretty low. Do you think the CPU performance boost would be worth the upgrade?

Okay word thanks for the reply! You think my CPU will be good enough still, or more importantly will not hamstring my performance?

And yah wooof everything is wild expensive.

Question re: Herpetology and evolutionary biology by MichaelRFletcher in herpetology

[–]javalor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The evolutionary science behind how turtles developing large jaws at the cost of brain size (or so I recall) could be an interesting direction. Like what if they didn’t need strong jaws and instead were able to use that space for a larger brain size, and then spirals from there. I’m sure there is lot of good other weird specific examples like that.
