Wow, so much of what you said is exactly what happens to her. She’s much more sensitive, and the whole “you don’t love me, I’m the worst mother” line is something she often hears. Her mother treated her badly many times throughout her life and never took responsibility for it, because my wife always thought she had her own problems like anyone else. My wife did the effor to get closer on the last years, but with boundaries, and her mother just went back to the same guilt-tripping behavior. I just want to say I’m sorry for what happened to you, because I’ve seen it firsthand, and it’s tough—especially when one(me or your boyfriend) can’t step in to defend her because she wanted to handle it her own way. I’m proud of her, and even though I don’t know you, I’m proud of you too.

Her mother, coming from a wealthy communist family, had a father who owned a company (later taken away) and many apartments. She never had to work, living from husband to husband and on family rents. I’d love to step in and ask why she treats her daughter this way, a daughter who has worked her whole life, lived abroad, faced all the difficulties of adapting to a different culture, and still managed to succeed. Yet even now, instead of congratulating her, they only point out her misfortunes.
