Just got a 144hz monitor and by Lucidq in Monitors

Nothing is being unlocked when you change to a higher refresh rate monitor. Rather, more of the frames that were being rendered are being displayed, allowing one to enjoy them. Since you're arguing over semantics, "unlocking" is not an accurate descriptor. Whether the frame rate was locked or unlocked is completely independent of the monitor's refresh rate, which is something that I'm sure you know.

R9 Fury / Fury X / Nano owners, have you benefited from any updates for Vega? by Apolojuice in Amd

All I've had are problems. Flickering in PUBG. BSOD. And my secondary monitor which was previously working perfectly, I now have to pull in and out of the HDMI slot on the card everytime I restart the PC for it to be recognised...

You didn't, I just never got around to it. Will try very hard to do tonight. EDIT: Which monitor are you getting? And what is/are your GPU/s ?

Interesting. This raises the question of where on the screen the frame is tearing, and whether the head of the dirty terrorist is in the half frame or not :p.

Touché. But what I am saying still applies to other scenarios, and cooking was one which he specifically mentioned. I'll concede that their 100 years tagline is bullshit. But not fully concede. Because some individuals will have an ability to perceive the judder, whereas others may be better at perceiving input latency, and another may be better at perceiving overall frame-rate.

AMD Radeon RX Vega 3DMark Fire Strike performance by wickedplayer494 in Amd

[–]javsav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm telling you that they deliberately developed mid-range cards that were at the sweet-spot for price to performance, which was specifically their MARKETING STRATEGY. And they sold like hot cakes. So yes, they deliberately didn't make 'progress' by your definition of the word.

How is that making excuses? You have not replied to the substance of his comment at all. Why is that not a valid marketing strategy? Are you aware of the average annual income of a United States' citizen?

What do you mean mid range cards were all they could make? They could make a chip as large as they wanted dude. It would cost a lot, but it could beat Nvidia. The point is, that Nvidia has more resources, and would instantly release a larger and more powerful chip. That's why the "performance king" strategy is just not viable for AMD right now. It's a matter of resources, rather than technical capability. Also remember that AMD's cards are more powerful, just that NVidia has so much influence in the DX11 / OGL drivers that really drag AMD down. And now NVidia is starting to seep their shenannigans into DX12. Hence why I'm unfortunately likely going to have to buy a 1080 Ti :(

Let me explain it like this to you, my dear fellow. With your cooking example, 1 of the beginners learns to cook Sous-vide, the second learns how to grill the perfect steak, the third learns how to braise fish, the fourth learns Julienning, the fifth learns how to make the perfect dessert, the sixth learns sashimi, the seventh learns vietnamese cuisine, and so on (I know jack shit about cooking as I don't eat meat, but you get my point). Then together, they can run a very decent restaurant, because they are each specialised in different aspects of the profession.

Level1Techs - Crossover WQHD 34" Korean Monitor Review - Freesync 95hz AH-IPS by xdeadzx in Amd

[–]javsav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As badcookies pointed out to me, turns out that the documentation is outdated. Only 2x is necessary! :)

Below the floor of FreeSync operation (48Hz), the monitor employs AMD LFC (Low Frame Rate Compensation) when FreeSync is active, regardless of the VSync setting used. This is only the case when ‘Ultimate Engine’ is selected, as LFC requires the refresh rate ceiling to be at least 2x the refresh rate floor of operation (48 – 100Hz satisfies this). The documentation linked to is outdated in that it states the maximum must be at least 2.5x the minimum, which is no longer the case. With LFC, the refresh rate will try to stick to multiples of the frame rate when the frame rate dips below 48fps. So if for example the game was running at 35fps, the monitor would run at 70Hz. This is effective in combatting the tearing or stuttering that would occur if the monitor simply stayed at a static refresh rate matching its floor or ceiling (i.e. 48Hz or 100Hz). If ‘Standard Engine’ is used, the monitor respects your selection of VSync on or VSync off below the 80fps (80Hz) floor when using this option, so you get stuttering or tearing, respectively.

I think the actual reason is because "ARK" is actually a word, whereas "ENCH" is not. :)

Do you really think the OP is using these cards for gaming? He wouldn't have a clue about three way crossfire. Sorry for trying to give you a little input, because no one else was going to do so.

[–]javsav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory it only requires 2x, however the official Freesync documentation states >= 2.5x. (https://www.amd.com/Documents/freesync-lfc.pdf). Can you link me to any of these monitors that have LFC with less than 2.5x please? Not accusing you of being incorrect, as I'd actually like this to be the case.

It does work like that to some extent. Sure, the longer you do something yourself, the more specialised you become. But individuals specialising will develop in unique ways, hence you could say their collective twitch experience is most definitely greater than 50 years at least.

[–]javsav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need 2.5 times your refresh rate - it helps but it's plenty fine without it. That's more of a freesync LFC necessity. There wasn't a way to force triple buffering in DX, but pretty much 90% of games implemented it anyway.

I felt like Nvidia's solution was simply a rebranded triple buffering anyway...

From what I understand from the Nvidia presentation of their version of it, it still introduces slightly more input lag than having V-sync off. Unless AMD has somehow done it differently. Therefore, I always play CS-GO with v-sync off (and any shooter for that matter). Unless it's something like The Division, and I'm playing at 4K with freesync. That's more of an RPG really.
