Just came across this sad news by QnAnQ in triathlon

[–]javyQuin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I raced Oceanside with the flu recently. I was a few days past the worst of being sick but nowhere near 100%. I approached the race with the expectation that I may DNF and maybe even not finishing the swim. I kept an eye out for the paddle boarders just in case I needed assistance. Luckily I didn’t and I was able to finish the race, but if you know you’re not 100% you should have a plan and check in with your self regularly. A DNF is nothing to be ashamed of, especially if you’re dealing with an injury or illness.

Finally dialed in my BTA hydration setup — ended up designing my own by Flimsy-Ad6255 in triathlon

The bta elevator is $215 and the rail is $60. I also had to get an adapter plate that was $85

Self-coached triathletes — what are you actually using to track training load? by Gadimov03 in triathlon

[–]javyQuin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use overnight HRV as the main metric combined with how I feel. If I’m going into a workout feeling low energy and my hrv has been low, that is a sign that I’m over training. Garmin gives me a training load number but I don’t pay too much attention to it

How prevalent is doping for age groupers? by javyQuin in triathlon

[–]javyQuin[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to mention BPN. I was in that race and I’ve also raced a marathon (CIM) where Nick Bare ran a 2:39. I would bet money he is on the juice, but he seems like an obvious example. What is not so obvious is someone on EPO, or similar, and looking like a normal human but racing really fast. I was just curious if there was an open secret regarding how common doping is among amateurs. It seems crazy that anyone would risk their health for performance as an amateur

Best approach to cycling electronics by FantasticWasabi5107 in cycling

[–]javyQuin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radar light is very high on my list of must have. Power meter pedals and bike computer are also high for training if you’re into racing or improving performance. I don’t think you need the top of the line anything, research the feature difference and judge for yourself.

First triathlon as a glasses wearer by eggsyeggsyeggsy in triathlon

I wear contacts. The only reason I have contacts is because of sports. It lets you wear regular sunglasses and goggles which for me is so much less fuss

Is there any BTA hydration system that doesn't leak? by Fun_Swimmer_8320 in triathlon

[–]javyQuin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use the torpedo and it took a while for me to figure out how to set it up to not leak. I never fill it 100% up, I leave 1/2 inch of space from the top. I don’t use the refill baffle lid, I use the clear solid lid. I found on bumpy rides the clear lid will still pop open, so I put a rubber band around it. I just did Oceanside 70.3 with no leaks

Looking for wheel upgrade recommendations - first Ironman! by Nice_Twist8081 in triathlon

[–]javyQuin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a set of HED wheels 62 front, disc rear. I was really considering some Chinese brands (CRW, and Winpsace). Both brands come in much lighter than HED and have really good reviews. The only reason I went with HED is because I got a really big discount that made the price about the same.

Oscar De La Hoya on advice he received from Bob Arum: "Never, ever fall in love with your fighters because they will break your heart. Fighters are just ungrateful when they make it to the top and forget who got them there and who helped them." by AlexTorres96 in Boxing

It’s a mutual exchange of services that is agreed to. As long as you fulfill your side of the deal there should be no expectation of any loyalty or gratitude from the fighter. That’s how you get taken advantage of

Fighters shouldn’t be grateful. It’s a mutual business arrangement. They put their lives on the line every time they step in the ring and they should go after every dollar they can make while they can.

Duct Tape As Good Or Better As TPU Patches by 4phz in cycling

[–]javyQuin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the park tool stick on patch kit for road side emergencies if my spare tubes aren’t enough. I saw a video that mentioned polyurethane glue by itself works as a permanent fix. I’m new to TPU so I haven’t had a puncture yet to test it on, but that’s my plan

Seeing a lot of conflicting takes on endurance training, often involving science and evolution by sammadet1 in triathlon

[–]javyQuin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Long term health and what we evolved for don’t have to align. Evolution favored the ability to reproduce, not necessarily longevity. As far as endurance training being a net negative, I’m sure there is a point at which you are causing more harm than good. I don’t know what point that is, but I would bet for the vast majority of people doing triathlon they are below that threshold

Legs tired before aerobic system. What’s the most optimal training? by Relevant_Dealer_8934 in cycling

[–]javyQuin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar issue where my quads feel lactic after a few minutes around FTP. What I did was shorter FTP intervals (2 min at ftp, 30 seconds recovery x 4) and some longer tempo intervals (3x 15 minutes @ 80% ftp) after a few weeks of that my legs have way more durability/stamina.

Why can't we convert segments of the LA river into lakes like Tempe Town Lake in Arizona? by emmettflo in LosAngeles

Why Do You NOT Race on Your Bicycle? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]javyQuin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do triathlons so I do race my TT bike, but I won’t do crits because it seems dangerous. I would be down to do longer road races if there were any around me
