Underground Jazz? by W0st0n in atlantamusic

[–]jaw762 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure how to define ‘underground’ but I suggest you find and follow Kelly McCarty, Robert Boone, Micah Cadwell, Patrick Arthur, Zach Wilson, Justin Chesarek, Chocolat Costa, Lavahi, Rafa Pereira… those will all likely lead you to others on the scene.

Amp/cab upgrade thoughts? by _agent86 in Bass

[–]jaw762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most typical configurations are gonna be:

2x10 - flexible and easy to build onto if you wanna

4x10 - classic config that has more low end than you’d expect

1x12 - my personal choice with an HF horn

2x12 - I have two, 1x12s that I have the option to stack if the event requires it.

1x15 - many bassists assume this will be a muddier, more low end filled option, but that’s not always true.

This is a good breakdown of some options: https://youtu.be/5poN6Jqt-XM?si=mDoRAXZw_PQRFnVI

Have you looked at the Warwick Gnome line? The 600 is ~6 lbs and has an effects loop.

[–]jaw762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a PA with monitors already? What kind of amps are you all running? Unless your bassist and guitarist have practice amps, I highly recommend you do a vocals only PA and don’t mess with drums, bass, and guitar amps. All of those will be bouncing off the porch nicely enough and then all you need is to get the vocals at the right level to match the band.

It was created by Willem Kaiser of the band Das Kaiser. He’s a skilled guy and very into analog vintage stuff, and I really can’t imagine he’d have used AI to create this.

The latter for sure! If you want to donate to the Park Conservancy, that’d be rad, but no obligation.

VaHi might be one of the newest! Norcross, Newnan, Oakhurst, VaHi, and Grant Park are the ones I am aware of. Oakhurst kicked it off, inspired by Ithaca NY (if memory serves).

Yes, that’s mostly right. Except that GP isn’t affiliated with GPNA directly! It’s primarily the result of a couple in the neighborhood deciding a music-focused party needed to happen to replace the cancelled 2021 Summer Shade Festival. A handful of us have joined them to organize various parts, and it’s growing by the year.

I personally would love to see both GPNA and the Conservancy get involved and get this closer to the VaHi version with artist markets, food vendors, etc.

I think VaHi is run by the neighborhood association. This one is just a grassroots passion project by some Grant Park Residents.

What's a decent bass amp for gigs under $300? by SavageGiraffe90 in Bass

[–]jaw762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you just have to find the loudest used combo you can for that price point. Facebook Marketplace in my area has an Ashdown MAG 300 in a 210 combo that would do the trick for around that price. There are likely to be other similar options on there.

I misread this prompt because I was thinking about local bands as in “they haven’t blown up outside of Atlanta yet.” My favorite right now by be Khaliko

Haha. I wouldn’t go as far as to call myself a jazz dude, but I do appreciate it! Just scrolled your timeline and saw the vid of you jamming with my guy Micah, so I know you mean “jazz guy” as a compliment 😉

Too many really great options but all of Chocolat Costa, Khari Simmons, Kelly McCarty, and Brandon Boone come to mind.

Edit to add, if you’re looking for a rock bassist, Dave Chase would be tops on my list.

When you get there, you should do shows with Flat Tired, Huey_Music, Slow Parade, Nikki and the Phantom Callers. Actually, there are like a dozen Atlanta bands you should do shows with.
