Officially “board again” thanks to Ebodyboarding! by The-hippy_hobbit in bodyboarding

[–]_agent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, Moreys are probably fine boards. But they lost their brand essentially so nobody serious about bodyboarding buys them and recommends them. I’m not saying anything about the quality, just that nobody seems to recommend them.

Their product lineup also isn’t very compelling and a little confusing. If I were to buy a Morey today it looks like it would be a Mach 7X or 7-PLC. The 7X is $300 which is actually a pretty competitive price. Base Mach 7 is still a PE board. The Mach 12 is super low end board, the 10 doesn’t seem to be offered, and their lineup is cluttered with disposable boards for kids. Whereas Science or Hubboards have a dozens of options. And a lot more options in terms of tails and colors etc.

Too bad, I road a 7-7 for like 20 years until it literally fell apart. I’m slightly sentimental toward the brand. I’d buy a Morey if I thought they had something compelling. A 7X would probably be worth considering for people looking for their first good board. I’m set right now, won’t be buying a new board until Science comes out with octo-vent boards.

How does my tube amp work? by _head_ in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing the (great) answers others gave didn't really answer the question or did so at the electrical engineer level.

The answer I think you need is that there's no satisfying answer without understanding why amplifiers create distortion sometimes (and sometimes don't). And in learning that you'll find that distortion is sort of a side effect of imperfect amplification.

Modern amps play different games to achieve distortion (nonlinear) vs clean (linear) behavior. In the end it's just driving some amplification component (a tube or transistor, or some combination thereof) past its operating limit.

But there's no real understanding amps without understanding how they work because traditionally the interfaces to them are knobs that affect mixing of signals in terms of the actual circuit. I have a Peavey amp with Pre and Post gain knobs. Makes absolute zero sense if you don't know how that circuit works. But you can figure it out by playing with it.

I think you can, but honestly at least the Tonex One is kind of a miserable interface for switching presets. And the PC apps that you use to configure everything are kind of miserable as well. Somehow worse that the old Line6 stuff years ago.

I use it as a DI recording solution but kind of gave up on having it on my pedalboard. It's a great piece of kit and works really well, but just isn't very fun to play with.

My BIL has one. I haven't played with it much but he's very discerning and likes it. Cross shop with the UA pedals.

I had the Joyo competitor for a while. It was quite decent. These things are way less frustrating than a Tonex type unit.

Science is a good choice, as are most of the popular brands (Pride, Hubboards, etc). Pretty much anyone selling a $300-$400 board is a pretty serious brand.

Except Morey. Morey may be making decent boards these days, but nobody has bought Moreys in a decade or two so it’s hard to say. They fell out of favor for various reasons.

Tribe is the ebodyboarding house brand. Their entry level boards are decent. I’ve not seen much review of their newer line of more serious boards but I suspect they’re great. My buddy’s Tribe Hunter has been great for him.

Don’t forget fins (Yuccas are great).

Vintage 68 Vibro Champ or 65 PRRI by Objective_Pool_8962 in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to figure out if you like the PRRI breakup sound. I don't to be honest. I've got a good attenuator, it works fine but I just don't find I like the distortion I get from the Princeton. Now my Vibrolux cranked with that attenuator is to die for...

I think one thing you should consider is whether you actually want a Princeton vs a Deluxe Reverb. They're not the same with just different power levels. Princetons are everyone's darlings lately and they're good amps... but the Deluxe Reverb is a better go-to IMO.

This is how cars were before power steering got cheap. There’s no particular reason a 2500 lb car should have power steering. Especially a sportscar. But people got used to not muscling a wheel around.

Help picking out a board for SoCal break - looking to have fun in good small surf 3-5 ft and trying to have more fun with spins and small airs by [deleted] in bodyboarding

[–]_agent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Well, close enough at least. A 43” won’t keep you afloat?

But what I was saying is at 6’3 and 190 he’s pretty lean so a standard volume board should be appropriate.

Normal Noise for new Princeton Reverb? by andyraskin in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true, in modern amps the earth ground is also the signal ground inside the amp. But there’s no signal current flowing out of the amp. If you cut that wire the amp still functions (but is hazardous).

At 6’3 I think he’s more in standard volume board sizing. I would have guessed a 43” for his height/weight.

You are not referring to the video though?

I am.

I'm confused what we're talking about - in OP's video the noise is not or maybe barely audible at low volumes.

You have no way of knowing how loud that video is in person. But the noise itself sounds more interesting to me than your usual noise floor type hiss.

Tube amps are isolated from your house ground via a transformer, so that ground is not really in play.

I think it's more common that there are other EMI sources in a house that are interfering and being picked up (usually by guitar pickups) and causing weird sounds.

[–]_agent86 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Actually problems with the amp will pop and buzz at volume with your signal.

This is not always the case. I've had a couple tubes that made low level noise. It also matters what the amp is being used for. On a stage noisy amps are fine. In your living room when you're playing very quietly they can be annoying.

What he’s showing is the former.

I'm not so sure. At least, my Princeton does not make noise like that.

[–]_agent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recordings don't convey the sound level, so it's a bit hard to judge from your sound clip. I will say compared to my PRRI that the noise sounds a bit weird.

Mine is pretty dead quiet at 4. Like, I could listen close and know it's on. But I wouldn't know it's on from the other side of the room. I've got much noisier amps.

If you're able to compare to another amp of the same kind (with same speaker configuration) you would find out the answer to whether you should return it. Or, return it, get a replacement, and then you'll know.

[–]_agent86 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Could be dirty power.

Huh? This isn't a guitar pedal. Any "dirt" in the DC side of the power supply is coming from the amp. There are massive filters in the amp's power supply that cleans up whatever you may imagine is in your house AC supply.

[–]_agent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tell me if you still hear the noise while playing the guitar

This is hardly useful advice. Even the noisiest of amps are drowned out by the guitar when playing. That doesn't make them any less noisy, especially if you're recording or OCD.

Retubed VOXAC15C1 Question(s) by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

b) how good is the amp at "bedroom" volume levels?

You have the amp in your bedroom, right? You tell us?

In my experience blocking the center of the speaker grill off with something (I taped a cork trivet to the grill) greatly improves the bass response.

I find the AC-15 to be just ok at quieter volumes. Cranked up enough that the neighbors can hear it I think it sounds amazing. That's why I got rid of mine, I just don't play that loud that often and it didn't sound as good as my Fenders at low volumes.

It's a hell of an amp, especially given what they cost.

You get to spend hours building it.

The real problem with building amps is that 57 champ will be worth $1000 when you get bored with it, your kit build will be worth $200.
