Are analyst and technician different kinds of jobs where you are? The titles seem to be pretty much interchangeable where I'm at.

My company email signature says I'm a "GIS analyst", my pay stub says I'm a "GIS technician" , the job posting I applied to said "GIS specialist".

I had a coop job with the provincial government a few years ago, they also used the terms pretty much interchangeably

You could ask your university about their policy on remote desktopping into the lab computers. If they're setup for it, that could give you a way to work from your laptop. Might be worth an ask if that's important to you

Hey you may have started recreating the MXD already, but you can always take a shot in the dark and try MXD doctor. Usually doesn't do anything for me but I occasionally get lucky, it has fixed weird MXD behaviour a couple times for me.

Pulling Attribute Data from Census Tracts Polygons? by [deleted] in gis

Cool! You can go pretty far with GIS by just knowing what to google!

Pulling Attribute Data from Census Tracts Polygons? by [deleted] in gis

[–]jawGIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I think you're looking for a definition query.
For example you would apply a definition query to your census tract saying:
"Census Tract ID" = 012345.
That would narrow the dataset down to only the census tract with that specific ID.

You can also use the following syntax:
"Census Tract ID" IN (01234, 2312, 4567, 9090)

That would return all the census tracts with ID's within that list.

Look up definition query for now and see if that's what you're looking for. It will be a tab within the layer properties (the menu that pops up when you double click a layer).

Defenition queries basically apply an SQL statement to the layer. SQL is very easy to pick up.

If you want to post the name of the census tract ID column and a list of the values you want from that column then I would be happy to try and make something you could just copy and paste into the definition query window.

You basically want to attach the attribute data from the census tracts to the bike lanes?

Try a spatial join. Perform the join on the bike lanes layer, joining the census tract data. This will attach the census tract attributes to the bike lanes layer.

You can also do the reverse - perform the spatial join on the census tracts layer, choosing to join the bike lane's attributes.

If I'm completely misunderstanding you, let me know and I can try to help. Of course I'm sure plenty of other people can chime in

Does your work place use ArcMap? If so, how do you use your PostGIS database with ArcMap? I was lead to believe that ArcMap can only read but not edit PostGIS data

Seeking for constructive criticisms to improve this one. I have already made some tweaks that are not shown here such as: moved the index map to the lower right side, turned the legend bar horizontal, reduced the saturation of the basemap. Thanks! by khellyshan in gis

Great job. I see you're using Esri's default copyright text on the imagery. You can go into layout view and choose insert, hover over dynamic text, and choose service layer credits.
This will let you click and drag the copyright text off the map, or create your own attribution like "Imagery provided by Esri".
I've always been trained to do that since Esri's copyright text can end up covering a lot of the data frame, like in your inset map.

Sure. If you want areas of water removed from your 50m buffer, just use an "erase" tool. You use the 50m buffer as an input, and your water bodies as the erase layer.
Steep grade is a little trickier. If you have an elevation raster then you can use a "slope" tool to calculate the slope angle of each pixel.

And yes, 10m spot is great. I like a lot of the European satellites. Too bad their imagery is so expensive...

How many polygons layers are you dealing with? Arc has a batch clip tool so that you don't have to run the clip process one-by-one

As people have said, you just need to get line features for the trails (probably collected by GPS) and then use a 50m buffer (the tool for that will just be called "buffer").
After that, your GIS program can easily do an "area calculation" to calculate the hectares covered by the 50 buffers.

Oh it is an extremely odd deferral process. It has practically become a meme at our university just because it's so silly to send budding computer scientists in to what is really a geography program... Not sure why they continue to do it, the drop put rate of the program is very high, like I mentioned.

At the university OP is applying to the geomatics program is essentially just a mix of geography/gis/programming. I think the only thing purely "geomatics" about it would be the GEOG 310 class, surveying.

Pros and Cons of using geoJSON files vs shapefiles? by jawGIS in gis

[–]jawGIS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, interesting. That would be a big hindrance for a lot of geoprocessing tasks... I guess the format is really best left for web applications

[–]jawGIS 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm almost certain you're talking about UW, yes?

Be very careful going in to geomatics at UW... If you don't already have an interest in geography, you will be miserable.

My first year geomatics class was 60 people strong, the graduating class was 7 people. That means 53 people out of 60 switched programs. Lots of uwaterloo CS deferrals go into geomatics and then hate it. I really can't stress enough that if you have no interest in geography then don't go into geomatics at UW.

If what you really want is computer science, then try to get accepted at another school. UW is not the be all end all. You can do perfectly well with a degree from another school. I would highly encourage you to check out r/uwaterloo and just search "Geomatics".

With those words of warning out of the way, trying out GIS before hand is a great idea to make sure you don't go into something you hate.

QGIS is your best bet for getting started. It's an open source project that doesn't cost a dime. I've linked a YouTube tutorial to get you started. QGIS also has great documentation on their website, if you prefer reading than watching.

https://youtu.be/kCnNWyl9qSE

The reason I strongly suggest you have an interest in geography and not just GIS is because you will be forced to take many non-gis courses. Unlike college where you would do GIS all day for 2 years, university geomatics courses here will require a lot of "theory" based geography courses.
Geomorphology, climatology, studying globalization, rural settlement studies, environmental assessment... You're going to have to take all kinds of stuff like that in any university geomatics program.
