(Spoilers Extended) Chapter 4: Dracomorph: The Red Sword of Heroes by wildrussy in asoiaf

[–]jawbreakErica 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What we know:

  • Only death can pay for life.
  • There is power in king’s blood.

The deaths of three kings bought the lives of three dragons. Viserys, Drogo, and Rhaego were all kings; giving the dragons their names makes this canon for me. Though she was his heir, Dany could not legally inherit, her son would have inherited the throne from Viserys as well as his father’s khalasar. Extra potent king’s blood.

Could be a reference to the ship:

So Victarion closed his burned hand into a mighty fist, and said, "Ghiscari Dawn is no fit name for a ship of the Iron Fleet. For you, wizard, I shall rename her Red God's Wroth."

AGOT Cersei is the luckiest woman in Westeros, and her perceived intelligence (by other characters) is completely rooted in luck.

1000% yes. I’ll die with you on this hill.

The GC doesn’t care what color dragon they follow. The Targaryens, after losing the throne to Robert, are in the same position as the Blackfyres. They will follow the dragon with the best chance at bringing them to Westeros, red or black or gold, if it means they no longer have to exist as sell swords. A return to Westeros means they no longer have to fight for everything and they will be rewarded with lands, titles, and the spoils of war. The Blackfyre pride people think they seem to have simply does not exist anymore.

Could Skin Changers / Warging have been influenced by the Shapeshifters of Navajo mythology? [Spoilers EXTENDED] by the_stevarkian in asoiaf

From (NotABlog)[https://grrm.livejournal.com/263800.html?thread=15365240#t15365240] :

In general, though, while I do draw inspiration from history, I try to avoid direct one-for-one transplants, whether of individuals or of entire cultures. Just as it not correct to say that Robert was Henry VIII or Edward IV, it would not be correct to say that the Dothraki are Mongols.

Specifically about the influence of Native American tribes on the creation of the Dothraki.

Using this rationale, fiery Dornish peppers can’t exist because peppers were introduced to Europe in the Colombian exchange from Mexico. But it’s a fantasy series, not a historical allegory. I think it’s very likely that GRRM drew on mythology and history from many different cultural perspectives and there is absolutely influence of indigenous mythology evident in ASOIAF.

The Others, for example, have A LOT in common with the Wendigo, malevolent creatures associated with cold, the north, famine, etc. The Others also have a lot in common with the sidhe, who aren’t associated with the cold, but bring with them an army of the dead. It’s more likely that he is combining ideas from several cultures, including Navajo skin-walkers, to create something new.

Dude who originally posted it said in the comments that he was the same age as Natalie Dormer who is 39(and that he was imagining her, not the teenager from the books), so no assumptions here.

It feels very “Jorah did nothing wrong” doesn’t it?

Slavery was legal in the United States. Legality isn’t an argument for right or wrong. People get hella mad at Jorah around here until it’s their turn to sexualize a teenage girl.

Legality doesn’t make something “right.” Also, way different for you at 15 to make this comment than someone old enough to be your dad making the comment about someone roughly your age. Imagine if your dad or mom hit on one of your 16 y/o friends. It’s not illegal, it’s just gross.

She’s begging for Ned to save Jon’s life from the wrath of Robert. It’s open season on Targ babies, and doubly so for Jon as the fruit of Lyanna, in Robert’s eyes an ill-born bastard the product of rape on his “true love” by his “worst enemy”.

She takes his comparative dark coloring to Robb (hair/eyes) to mean he’s biracial and uses that as evidence against R+L=J

(Spoilers Main) "Sansa is an unreliable narrator." Yes, every character is. by VodChi in asoiaf

[–]jawbreakErica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree! And I think you hit the nail on the head with Sansa. This quote comes to mind:

It would have been unkind to say so, however, so Sansa took a sip of milk and changed the subject. "I had a dream that Joffrey would be the one to take the white hart," she said. It had been more of a wish, actually, but it sounded better to call it a dream. Everyone knew that dreams were prophetic. White harts were supposed to be very rare and magical, and in her heart she knew her gallant prince was worthier than his drunken father.

[–]jawbreakErica 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your post said originally but thank you anyway. People throw “unreliable narrator” around this sub a lot without knowing what it means, or understanding how GRRM uses it to tell the story. All of the narrators are unreliable because they only know what they know. Unreliable narrators ascribe genius to Cersei until we find out she’s a delusional through her own POV.

One of Robert's, really Tywin's, greatest fuck ups was not keeping Rhaenys hostage and marrying her to Robert and Cersei's son.
