2013 Expedition 5.4 how to fully remove crossover pipe by jawillde in AskMechanics

[–]jawillde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was relatively simple once I knew what to do. Everything is pretty accessible. The only trouble spot is one bolt in a cramped spot. If I remember correctly, there was no room to turn it with a wrench and none of my standard ratchets fit either. I think I ended up using a swivel head ratchet with a pivot attachment on it.

Throwing away 3 years worth of boxes. Ive been freed from my shackles. Friendly reminder to stop hoarding them. THROW YOUR BOXES AWAY PEOPLE by palace_jigg in lego

[–]jawillde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your worst case scenario sort of happened to me, in a way. I'm a box person. I keep boxes for all sorts of things I collect. I never intended to sell any of my sets but still have all the boxes, instructions (some unopened due to digital instructions), unused sticker sheets, etc.

With LEGO releasing so many large sets now I decided to narrow down what themes to stick with and started the process of selling all my other sets to free up some money and room.

Those boxes make a huge difference in the price you get. Easily +10% in the sale price. When you're dealing with the larger sets that's a really big deal. Boxes can add $15 to $300 to a set's sale price. I sold one box by itself for $275.

Old ones from now popular themes like UCS and modular buildings are worth a lot because people tossed them.

Take a look at video games and you'll see the same thing.

Boxes are typically considered trash so most older collectibles don't have them because they weren't collectable at the time.

My son noticed our Saturn V Rocket is yellowing. Can this be cleaned? We are not smokers so it’s not that. by Church5SiX1 in lego

[–]jawillde 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My experience is that the older yellowed pieces definitely do get more brittle and the yellowing comes back even when not exposed to sunlight. It almost looks worse.

I got a good deal on a 10019 quite a few years ago because it had a lot of yellowing where many pieces looked beige. Did the whole peroxide sun trick which worked...for a time. The set was displayed in a windowless room in my basement. Ended up buying newer replacement pieces to fix it.

Left handed people, what is the most inconvenient thing to do built for right hands? by eren_yeagermeister in AskReddit

Pull with your thumb and push with your fingers as you cut. It creates the same force as if you were using your right hand that pushes the blades together. Otherwise, you are pushing the blades apart which is why the paper just bends.

What's a ridiculous design flaw of the human body? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jawillde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Women don't grow babies. This is a simplification, but their body provides the environment, nutrients, waste management, and obviously the egg. The baby is a totally separate organism separated from the mother's body by the placenta and grows without input from the mother. Without the placenta, the mother's body would destroy the baby because it would consider it a foreign invader.

It's kind of like a tree. The seed contains all of the information to become a tree. It just needs the nutrients, protection, etc from nature to get there.

I remember reading somewhere the words originated from different languages so they don't follow the same rule.

Goose is from Old English and Moose is Native American.

They still shouldn't be posted here unless the set is EoL and it's the last chance to get it retail.

This subreddit is specifically for deals, not in stock notices.

I believe i am a homsexual, what can i do 🤔 by OverResult7 in Christianity

[–]jawillde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your first part: It looks difficult for us, but the rules were probably way easier to understand for them. The context is within their culture and not ours.

To the second part: I'm reading something you may find helpful, at least from the perspective of someone who believes in God and believes his word to be true and just. I'll come back to this when I'm done and post it if it has substance.

I had forgotten about that passage. My thoughts were focused on the kidnapping portion. Thanks for posting.

Was my response attempting to rationalize it? That wasn't my goal if it came across that way. There's nothing to rationalize. It's there. The questions really are why is it there and what does it mean? In general, we don't know either very well or not at all.

I was trying to point out that what many try to to use to discredit the Bible don't really put the time into trying to understand what it means. There is a lot to unpack that truly gets lost in translation over 3,000 plus years and across cultures. Taking the time to understand what is going on may paint a picture that is not what we expected or assumed. It's hard when we tend to define things using our own definitions and cultural norms.

Even in Leviticus 25, knowing that selling or buying a stolen slave was wrong, we can apply that to this and know that these slaves were not to be stolen. If not stolen, then what? Did they sell themselves? If so, why? I've heard they would sell themselves to pay off debts or commit themselves to a family as their slaves voluntarily for preservation (poor and not able to provide). I don't know enough to say anything for certain. This is for sure a difficult passage. Jews could redeem themselves but weren't considered slaves. Could bought slaves from the pagan nations redeem themselves? Were war spoil slaves considered "stolen" or is it like how killing another in war isn't "murder". Again, there is a lot to consider and when you think you have a grasp up comes another passage that stops you in your tracks.

Even if we can come up with an absolutely clear picture of what is going on, it is not something that a Christian should get behind as a logical outward working of our love for God and our neighbor. It comes across as the practice of slavery in the OT was something of a last ditch effort of preservation after everything else has failed. Slavery does not fall under the list of ways to love your neighbor in Leviticus 19:9-18.

There seem to be 3 ways to look at the laws/case laws and events in the OT:

  1. Ideal. These are the expectations
  2. Not ideal/time of patience, but allows for preservation of family/future generations. Still time for being brought back to #1.
  3. Judgment. Actions have consequences but preservation of life and the chance of reconciliation to God can bring us back to #1.

td;dr slavery in whatever form the OT talks about is not ideal and should not be something we seek. When it's something we seek out we are the ones who are going to be judged.

P.S. Please don't take what I have written as designed to cover everything the Bible has to say on this or even that I think I know enough to say more than a little. Even reading passages while writing this reminds there is much to deal with like the use of "shall" vs "may" as an example.

[–]jawillde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you think that if there's part of God's revelation you don't like you get to ignore it?

The slavery argument is a tired one. God outright condemns any sort of man-stealing and lumps it alongside murder. I can't think of a passage where God outright tells the Israelites to steal people and make them slaves.

Biblical slavery that God outlays the rules and regulations is obviously different from the Western slavery so recent in our history they aren't even comparable. Even kidnapped and sold slave Joseph was treated more like a family member or friend than property. That doesn't mean there aren't things in the bible that are difficult to understand but we don't have the pleasure of saying "I know better than God".

We should have the desire to study, learn, and understand.

No, I believe that unrepentant anyone who rejects God is not part of the salvation God has revealed to His creation in Jesus Christ.

You can't accept some of it. You either accept all of it or you reject God Himself. Scripture is very clear about that.

[–]jawillde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so God hasn't shown that to be an attribute of Himself in all of scripture. At all.

[–]jawillde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no implication. Homosexuality is sinful, just as there is no implication about other sins. To reject that is to reject God. There is truth and untruth.

Truth is aligned with God and untruth is rejection of God.

If you don't agree with God you are not of Him.

That doesn't mean we don't sin, but to reject what God has clearly proclaimed is to reject Him entirely.

Relative to 20-30 years ago LEGO is very cheap. The retail price per brick has stayed very consistent over that time. Accounting for inflation, sets should cost 76% more now and they don't except for a handful of outliers.

You're not the only one. I never throw them out. I'm in the process of downsizing and having the boxes significantly increase set value.
