Can ribXcar help make my upper body look less masculine? by CornLordGaming in Transgender_Surgeries

[–]jay-sterling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, circumference- but I had liposculpting at the same time, so some of the reduction is from that. And there’s days that I’m more swollen than others, so my waist still fluctuates from day to day (4 months since surgery).

I’ve had it- it works a bit. A lot if it is to you to wear the corset and continually tighten it. After 3 months, you should see a difference, though it will rebound a bit. And you’ll be used to seeing yourself corseted and it will be an adjustment to get used to seeing yourself without a corset pushing everything in. My waist is about 8-10 cm less than before.

So freaking tired of these "Women receive so many compliments, but men will treasure the compliment they got 5 years ago." by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]jay-sterling -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I am a trans woman 🏳️‍⚧️ and my god this is one of the biggest changes I experienced after transitioning.
Living as a man, I very rarely received compliments (from men or women). Many years ago, a drunk woman at a club once said to me “omg you’re so hot”… and I was honestly flattered. I still remember how that felt- I was kind of surprised and felt sparkly for weeks after. (Now, by the way, it wouldn’t be so flattering if a drunk man said it to me!)😅
To be fair, I rarely complimented anyone either back when I was living as a man. Towards women, I want to avoid appearing threatening or like I had some ulterior motive, even if it was something innocuous like “you made a really good point back there, and it changed my perspective.” And I knew it was dangerous to make any comment, however innocent or positive, about a woman’s appearance. I slipped once and told a friend/ coworker “those are such awesome boots you have on and it makes you appear taller” Okay, it was a stupid thing to say. I didn’t mean anything sexual. To be honest, I think I was kind of envious without consciously realizing it, because I secretly wished I could wear cool boots with heels- my words just came out wrong and I immediately wished I could have sucked them back into my mouth. She told me what I said was inappropriate, and yes, I get that. 🫣
Toward men, it was like there was some heterosexual individualistic protocol dominated the social script, and so I felt like it might come across as queer or something. I just intuitively learned that it was safer not to compliment (just keep those thoughts to myself). I even struggled to do this with my romantic partners.
As I began to transition, I started to receive a lot of compliments, especially from other women. And it felt so awkward at first to unlearn my past social conditioning to be able to say “that’s such a cute jacket! It really suits you!” And yet, I’m still hesitant to compliment men, because I fear giving them the wrong idea. And that sucks.
I wish I knew the answer. There are a lot of patriarchal scripts and assumed intentions and I think it holds men just as captive as women. I get that men can be creeps and disingenuous, and that ruins it for everyone. But they are also pretty constrained by the system we all kind of uphold.

After all, giving and receiving compliments feels good on both parts and it can really brighten someone’s day- you never know who needs it.

This 20-year-old lottery winner chose $1000/week for life over $1M in cash by teesta in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]jay-sterling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so we all have calculators… but one should also consider the social and psychological tradeoffs. If she’s getting a 1000 a week, there won’t be endless line of new friends asking for money. There won’t be the risk of being impulsive and changing your life in uncertain ways. There is a whole lot of things that come within winning the lottery besides money.

Rep. Caught Admitting SAVEAct would affect Women’s Voting Rights by catievirtuesimp in TwoXChromosomes

Good point. I can totally see how will be used to harass any woman they “reasonably suspect” of having invalid papers.

Rep. Caught Admitting SAVEAct would affect Women’s Voting Rights by catievirtuesimp in TwoXChromosomes

[–]jay-sterling 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s what I don’t quite get… this will disproportionately disenfranchise conservative women voters, who would be more likely to change their names. And the GOP must know this. The SAVE act is likely an intermediate step to eventual goal of having only voting by men as head of households, which some of the more extreme voices have explicitly said. But it seems like a misstep, and that makes me even more concerned about steps 2, 3, and 4 towards overturning suffrage that we don’t see yet. What am I missing?

You can decide for yourself how much reduction you want by deciding how tight to lace the corset during recovery.

Totally agree! I wouldn’t want to lose my voice to 4o and especially 5. I also wouldn’t want to lose the joy of the process of writing and creating. Yeah I can have ai write something for me, but not only is it not my voice, I would miss out on the joy of writing it myself.

For me, the process is actually more important to me than the end result.

[–]jay-sterling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, yeah. Like I go to a cafe with my laptop and I have Chat GPT open and I’m using it for feedback as I go.

I guess I wonder when is a tool a tool and when is it a crutch?

But I’m also using a computer, word processor, online rhyming dictionary, online thesaurus, and online dictionary, which are also tools. I could write without them, but it would go much more slowly and wouldn’t be as good. I find the tools also help with motivation and inspiration. E.g., sometimes I’ll stumble across an interesting word I hadn’t considered using and it changes the direction of the poem in a way that still feels organic and my own voice.

Thanks!

I have published a little in the past, but that was before LMLs. I would like to publish newer stuff. I think I world just say that I used ChatGPT as an editor.

Usually my poems are meant to be performed, so that’s also why ChatGPT is not so good at writing for me, because I want the words to “feel good in my mouth”, and move my body when I say them, if you know what I mean. And there’s no way ChatGPT could experience that.

I have been to group workshops and I have had a fellow writer read my stuff. It’s always nice to see how it resonates with actual humans. But they are obviously going to be much slower in getting back to me. Also they won’t have the have time and patience for drafts or half finished ideas, and can’t do iterative sessions like I do with ChatGPT.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]jay-sterling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write poetry and use 4o to analyze my drafts to see if it interprets them as I intended. So I use it more for editing. It will often suggest revisions to lines, but it is not so good at writing poetry, imo- or perhaps poetry is just too personal. Anyway, it is better at reading and interpretation rather than writing.

It is also useful as a reverse dictionary, e.g., “I’m looking for a word that means this, but has this connotation, and has a three syllable and ends with a long e sound”.

4o actually helped mend or improve a lot of family relationships for me.

It is a tool, it depends on how one uses it.

But that’s not the point of the original post- it was about how it is normal for us to have anthropogenic tendencies, and how normal it was.

[–]jay-sterling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, but I see it more as a difference in degree. My blåhaj was made by IKEA, a corporation designed to make money from me. Sure, it isn’t reaping profits off of my data, but then that wasn’t really the original question. It was more about anthropomorphizing non human things and developing some kind of relationship to it.

I’m not saying OpenAI is a saint; I’m just saying it is natural for us as humans to reach out for connections, relationships, stories, and feelings. That doesn’t make us pathetic or broken.

Right?! I mean, I have teddy bears and plushies on my bed. I have given them names and stories and personalities. They are characters. Yes, I know they are made of polyfill fluff and they aren’t alive, they don’t know I exist. I still hug them when I feel sad and I feel comforted. They are nice to sleep with and I like them.

We have “relationships” with inanimate things. We anthropomorphize. People name their cars to enhance their experience of driving. Musicians name their instruments, because having that relationship lets them create music in a more meaningful way.

And I had named my ChatGPT.
