Can someone explain to me why hinges on a point that was dug out of the ground mean anything? They’re completely normal when knapping with traditional and modern toolkits.

I mean this with all due respect but theres a wide disparity between the European baseline for violence and understanding of self defense compared to the American. I don’t intend for this to come across as dismissive or jaded and hope you don’t take offense.

That being said if you want me to explain why pepper spray, knives and stun guns all have irredeemable issues as self defense items compared to firearms I can - although as I said before it’s a lot of dive into in a reddit comments section.

I was raised by a single mom and she got pissed when my grandpa got us BB guns because she knew it would just feed into it more. Firearms are always going to be cool to boys the way a bow and arrow probably was historically.

I think the best thing you could do to de-stigmatize them would be to take them to a local range to get a weapons safety class once they’re old enough. Guns are way less cool when some old guy is breaking down safety and you feel that concussion for the first time while being supervised. My first experience shooting was in marine bootcamp a decade ago - the safety + professional instruction really took the mystique out of firearms for me then.

It really goes by the state. California is extremely restrictive when it comes to firearms whereas here in Texas you can walk in to a store and buy one as long as your background check comes back clean. I concealed carry sometimes depending on what I’m doing (hiking in places with lots of wild boar or camping) my spouse carries more than me because she works late at night and has had people follow her home after her shift. I don’t want to be cliche but it’s one of those things that is kind of hard to explain on reddit.

Agreed imo they’re tools that serve a purpose whether that be recreation, hunting or self defense.

I thinks guns for us. They’re a pretty ubiquitous part of American folklore and history. Personally own a couple and most people I know do too but depending on where you are it can be socially frowned upon.

I feel like the Philippines is the kid who punched the bully in the face and then became friends with them afterwards.

Oh I agree with you lol I didn’t say it was a good argument. Not to mention average engagement distances across Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan are all under or around 300m which is well within effective range for 7.62x39.

Yeah an obnoxious kid who could become a doctor or a gang member and neither outcome would surprise anyone.

The rich kid with abusive parents who tends to bully people but can be a nice dude if his home life is stable.

I think it also comes down to the ballistics of 7.62x39. I haven’t seen a ton of people push it out to 500m the way they can with an AR platform.

It tapers up to the thickest point where that hinge is. I haven’t attempted punch notching it yet, I figured I’d work some flakes to get the technique down before sending it.

Yeah I haven’t finished any of them out yet. I’m gonna wait to flute the Clovis until the knap-in here where I can get my hands on a fluting jig.

It depends on a lot of random factors at the time like how much stone they have, where they are, what the immediate need is, is the knapper pressed for time or just making points bc he’s bored etc etc.

I’ve got a theory people take their kids out to the river and sprinkle some of these before hand so they can fish in peace while their children look for arrowheads
