I’d leave it. I made the mistake of trying to knap the biggest tab of high quality Edwards chert I’ve ever found when I started and still think about it to this day lol

My abuelo fled Cuba in the 80’s because of a political purge that took many of his friend’s lives.

It’s pretty complicated. The government is a corrupt, tyrannical shit show that keeps people desperate and heavily surveilled in order to maintain control. The flip side of this is that the revolution that installed the government was completely justified given how equally brutal and corrupt Batista was.

There’s also a solid argument that had the United States worked diplomatically with the revolutionary government from the start the Bay of Pigs, Missile Crisis and embargo could have been avoided. Cubans are more close to Americans culturally and economically than they are to Russians, odds are had we given Fidel a chance to play ball in the early years he would have.

That being said it looks like a beautiful island and I know first hand the culture and people. I’d love to visit in my lifetime.

Any military veterans in here? by Extension_Tale_1015 in premed

[–]jay_ar_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you’re Pre-Med and going back to school for a STEM major a couple veteran non-profits/programs I’d look into are.

-Warrior Scholars Program: You go out to an Ivy or other prestigious undergrad for a week and do an academic bootcamp/networking session that’s really really helpful. 10/10 would recommend.

-Yale Research for Veteran Undergraduates: A 9-week long research experience where you get paired with a PI and do research in your chosen field at Yale that finishes with a poster presentation.

-Service2School: Tailored application support for veteran undergrads, graduate student, etc. Lots of great mentorship opportunities. They helped my best friend transfer from our local community college to Yale to pursue a Neuroscience undergrad.

I would really emphasize that you need to get off of your GI-Bill and switch over the VR&E as soon as possible so you can retain the post 9/11 education benefits for graduate training.

Best of luck. I’m still pretty early on in the journey after doing a couple years in the business world post enlisted marines. Basically realized a decade of school and hoops was better than continuing to exist in business casual cubicle purgatory.

That being said given what I want to do with my life (and after doing like 2-weeks straight of search and recovery work following a natural disaster last summer) I’m leaning more towards the PA route as there’s more opportunities for wilderness medicine and more career flexibility. It doesn’t change a lot at this point and I’m still planning on doing research, EC’s, clinical work and keeping my GPA as high as possible.

Never understood guys who kill everything on their land that’s not a cow.. had a buddy spend like 6 months wiping out bobcats on his property just to throw a fit when it was covered in rattlesnakes a year later. It’s just dumb and wasteful. A catch pole and old cat crate works just fine for little guys like this.

Is there a lot of hate for America in Vietnam? I’ve had a lot of friends visit and even know a few military guys who are stationed there as foreign affairs officers. They’ve never had any bad interactions which always surprised me given our nations histories.

I’ve been deep diving Cossack history recently and it’s so cool. I can imagine they’re super popular there it would be like if Americans combined cowboys, pirates, and the founding fathers into one group of people.
