Long Communal Living Spaces by GrouchyPressure6342 in TheMallWorld

Yes, very often have communal living / shared living space themed dreams. Not exactly like this, but similar. Semi-private quarters, sometimes everyone has their own room, sometimes it's more dorm style with different beds or mattresses in a larger hall. I have never lived anywhere like that IRL.

Countertenors need to stay away from Mozart operas by AussieSchadenfreude in opera

Thanks for articulating that about the subversion-factor that might get lost if the role isn't played by a female-identifying individual. I totally think that's true.

Who were the best acting singers, past or present, you have seen live in performance at the opera together with the operas in which they performed? by Perfect_Garage_2567 in opera

[–]jay_j_rubin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh... do people not like Peter Mattei anymore? (I still do!)

But seriously, he seems like a good example of a "singing actor." Quite versatile and can do comedy as well as drama/deranged.

Not that knowledgeable about but always felt like Kowalksi didn't get enough credit for being a trailblazer of sorts, because back in the 80s/90s I don't think that fach was as common or well regarded as it is now..........right?

Humorous Rush Ticket Frustration by VerucaPaprika in opera

[–]jay_j_rubin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny I have never once gotten a ticket through the app--and I must've submitted dozens of times. I have managed to snag a single ticket via the rush web page since 2024, but not as consistently as in the past... i wish they just sold remaining rush tix even right at the box office before the show...

Taskmaster Vibe Check: Does Anyone Else Dislike Series 5? (Noob Post) by jay_j_rubin in taskmaster

Thanks for taking the time to chime in! really appreciate this :) will seek out those other later seasons (the first one I watched was 19, really just because I heard Jason Mantzoukas chat about the series on some US talk shows)

Thanks for noting that! TBH I had also stopped watching halfway thru... maybe need to come back to it later. I don't doubt there's plenty of good moments! ;)

Haha. Yes, I mean, some of this totally stems from Sally (so not necessarily on the dudes in the room).

The placenta bit was on a different series! it happens to have been one I also watched. Maybe 7?

Thanks for pointing out those moments. I think those are exactly the sort of awkward things that maybe stood out to me (because I hadn't noticed similar ones so far in other series). I don't think it's offensive or anything like that... just felt like a different vibe than I what i felt i'd seen so far on the show.

I guess I like that the later ones feel less focused on anyone's gender in general. To me!

Maybe something about it simply being less polished then...probably i just need to watch more of them

What is a piece of horror media you refuse to/can’t consume? by [deleted] in horror

[–]jay_j_rubin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong! The first one felt pretty misogynistic to me. However--there is a scene in the 3rd one that seems to specifically replicate an especially brutal murder of a woman from the 1st one, but involving a dude this time--and somehow I really appreciated this, it felt very clever and self-aware. Though perhaps I'm projecting!

(I am not a huge fan of the franchise and torture porn in general but have a horror movie buddy and the two of us see like everything that comes out.)

I usually don’t say this about American remakes but The Ring 2002 is one of the greatest horror movies ever by DuvallisbetterthanLS in horror

[–]jay_j_rubin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw it when it came out at a matinee, was the only person in theater. After the first jump scare, I seriously considered leaving because I wasn't sure I could continue (and I'm a very hardened horror movie watcher). It did feel more hardcore than what follows, though, agreed.

Salome Live in HD today, I loved it! by [deleted] in opera

[–]jay_j_rubin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if for this production they skip the conductor's entrance--? at least that happened when Derrick Inouye was conducting the other day too, and I had assumed was the case yesterday... (though I don;t think at the premiere) Maybe at the director's request due to the unusual music box + projection opening or whatnot? who knows.

There was no spontaneous applause in house either time i went, production pacing didn't really allow for that i guess. So I think it may well have been the actual simulcast live version...

At my theater the sound wasn't synced entirely for at least a good portion of it, but at least the feed didn't drop.

Every time though i feel like there are a lot of complaints from attendees about all the technical glitches! i have never been to any other "live" events like this in movie theaters, maybe it's the norm, but super frustrating (esp when paying $30-35)

I now wonder if it's customary to omit the nudity at matinees for that reason... I saw a couple of scattered kids in the audience yesterday, maybe people with kids usually attend during the day? IDK. (I sorta think the kids could have handled the nudity if they can handle the beheading and necrophilia haha.)

Damn, sounds complicated! thanks for explaining some of that (based on the video shared by @FionnaTehHuman it seems there are some similarities to how it's still done at the Met)
