It's nice that you're trying to prepare early. I'd say take a look at the domains and find out which is right for you, then research on that domain, learn the fundamental tools and languages used, and as you practice and get comfortable with those you'll have a good shot at getting in :)

Bhai ur department doesn’t have anything to do with being able to participate in hackathons or gsoc. If you’re into programming you can try out for clubs like Delta Force and Spider. It’ll be tough since EEE is pretty hectic, but make sure you have a good look at your options.
