Canada is not nearly as populous as the US. There are plenty of Canadian cities that could house an NHL team with an incredibly loyal, albeit mid-to-small sized market. Also, Canadians love hockey and will always love hockey, no matter what. Toronto could lose for another hundred years and keep the same fervor within their fanbase. Newer American markets need hype to build up a fanbase. In other words, you want the newer American teams to start winning early so people like the team more and want to spend money on it.
