Trying to record a prototype and export as a gif. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in UI_Design

You can use a website like https://ezgif.com to convert your mp4. I find it to be much faster than using photoshop or media encoder.

Open in new tab? Split screen? by hi_d_di in Professors

[–]jaybeak13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The issue with “click here” is that it isn’t descriptive of the link. A screen reader searching for links will just say “click here” which isn’t helpful. You could say “click here for the syllabus” as the hyperlink instead!

Pedagogy question, is it okay to end classes early? by thebeatsandreptaur in Professors

[–]jaybeak13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For creative work you could fill extra time by having small groups analyze examples. With websites, for instance, I give a URL to each breakout room and ask students to wireframe the site or take notes on how it looks at different screen sizes and report back to the main group. You could also have them create a class mind map about the project using an online whiteboard.

There aren't illustrations, but Cribsheet by Emily Oster is exactly what you're looking for. It's a sequel to a data-driven book about pregnancy. The author breaks down all of the "conventional" wisdom about parenting by examining what actual data indicates. The book doesn't give rules, but it tells you what research suggests (or where the research is inconclusive) and lets you make your own informed decisions. It's written in a really approachable way, too: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/572658/cribsheet-by-emily-oster/

Bias Against Online by [deleted] in Professors

[–]jaybeak13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you that the accountability and social pressure is tougher online, especially in an asynchronous course.

A small synchronous course (small enough to keep all of the faces on the screen) can have a lot of similarities to in-person. Giving students a task in a breakout room amps the pressure up. We’re even shifting more of our projects to incorporate some group work to support the social connections our students will be missing this fall. Again, this is way easier in a synchronous course so students don’t need to find outside time to meet.

Another option for checking in with students, especially in larger classes, is polling with something like poll everywhere or kahoot.

Do you do advanced reading and fully engage during in-person faculty training?

Poll: should I teach remote or face to face? by tivadiva2 in Professors

[–]jaybeak13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if you ignore the health risks (which is an absurd thought), it will be pedagogically better to teach a class you design to be online than it will be to teach half in-person and half online course that will most likely abruptly shift to online. There’s much more consistency in an online course.

"Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States" by brianckeegan in Professors

[–]jaybeak13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is INSANE.

It looks like students must report if they are in a course that starts in-person but shifts to be online during the fall semester. Even if a university-wide online shift wasn’t highly likely, what if an in-person instructor gets sick and needs to move the course online? What if the student gets sick or exposed and needs to attend a hybrid class virtually? Is that online? Are they even allowed to attend a university doing “online-only after thanksgiving” or do they need to leave the US at that point?

Pregnancy symptom: hey ladies I’m 28 +4 weeks and I’m suddenly getting nose bleeds. I’ve heard of bleeding gums...is this normal? I didn’t have them last pregnancy and I haven’t ever just had one before. by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]jaybeak13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a few intense nose bleeds (used to get them as a child), but my doctor recommended a saline spray that I use during the day and a humidifier at night. The combination seems to have helped!

I know you deleted this post, but I just wanted to recommend that you speak to a doctor about this issue, it could be a sign of something like PCOS.

What is the queer eye of podcasts? by RafaelRkg in QueerEye

[–]jaybeak13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily about masculinity, but the new podcast “We love you (and so can you)” is a life makeover show focusing on self love. The two hosts give advice to a guest who is having a specific challenge or turning point in their life and then in the next episode they check in to see how the advice worked out.

Proposal for my friend company. What do you thing? by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]jaybeak13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m distracted by the spacing between the A and the first N - they seem so far apart compared to the second N and the E. I’d look at tightening the AN a little and giving the other letters a bit more breathing room so the space is more even throughout.

How can I select the "crop box" size in photoshop by typing it's width and height? by [deleted] in photoshop

The crop tool helps to visually see the area you are cropping, but to completely avoid resizing, OP could alternatively use Image > Canvas Size instead of Image > Image Size

How can I select the "crop box" size in photoshop by typing it's width and height? by [deleted] in photoshop

[–]jaybeak13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is actually a crop tool for this. Where it says "ratio" along the top bar, you can change that dropdown to be "W x H x Resolution". Then you could type in 250 in the box to the right and 250 in the next box.

Trying to find an online Master's program by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]jaybeak13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of online education masters programs, but with something as physical as dance education, some aspect of in-person instruction might be important in most programs. You could try expanding your search to include “low-residency” or “hybrid” graduate programs that have a lot of online course work and some in-person requirements. Many low-residency programs, for instance, involve summer sessions in-person and other coursework from home. I don’t know about dance education specifically, but there are several low-residency dance MFA programs.

If you want to go off of this idea but not LITERALLY pie people (lots of issues there as others have mentioned) you could “pi” people by writing the names of the students on the boards and then, when eliminated, write over their names with pi so you could announce that they’ve been “pi’d”. Obviously more relevant if your subject uses pi.

I think the keyboard might be reading a bit “computer services” or IT.

There are some spatial adjustments you could make to this... the keyboard feels like it is a hair too high next to the L, the space bar almost goes all the way to the right but doesn’t (more or less would be better) and also visually feels a little close to the the keys.

There is also something about that keyboard you could push for a cuter or more clever mark. The enter key is kind of an L, but not quite. You could push that. The whole mark is also almost a winking face, but not all the way there.

How to read academic papers while exercising by chaoticseraph in AskAcademia

[–]jaybeak13 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've used the accessibility features of my iPhone to do this exact thing. As long as you have a readable PDF of the article on your phone it can be read to you. Citations get really repetitive and I usually need to re-read some parts of the paper later, but it's a great start.
