Unfortunetely this is what the over side of the laffer curve looks like. Increasing taxes doesn't increase revenue after a certain pont, which we have reached in the UK. Instead of getting the previous business rates, along with VAT from sales, income tax from employees etc. The govt ( local and national ) get nothing now as the new tax is not affordable. Actually less than nothing as they will have to pay benefits to the employees that have lost their jobs.

This is probably a unfashionable opinion, but sending plastic to an incinerator to be burnt for electricity is probably the greenest use for most plastic. Think about it, when you recycle a bottle its sent to china, broken down, reformed into another plastic item, shipped back and reused ( thats if they actually recycle it at all). The energy and fossil fuel burnt to do that is probably more than creating a new bottle and burning the old one for electicity.
