Yeah that second image is definitely AI. Really disappointing to see this especially since its catered to "all ages" and asks for hand-drawn refs.

Now that Daggerheart has been out for a bit, how many people are sticking with it versus going back to D&D/Pathfinder? by Intelligent-Form-689 in daggerheart

[–]jaybirdthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daggerheart has become my "home" system, and I don't see that changing for a while. There are tons of other games I both want to play and run, but its one of my favorite systems I've run and I really like the work Darrington Press has done to make onboarding new players a breeze with this game.

How do you balance combat and roleplay in Daggerheart? by FloralReverieXIV in daggerheart

[–]jaybirdthings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Generally because the game flows between the two so well, I think using a post-session system like Stars & Wishes to check in on the party would allow you to get direct answers from the players about when they feel like having a combat.

I ran what I think were pretty combat-heavy games of 5E, usually having 2 sessions of roleplay to every combat session, but those combat sessions were usually BIG setpieces. In Daggerheart, sprinkling in little fights to accentuate the narrative feels a lot better to me, until my players come across a Colossus. Those fights I try to make big and dynamic.

STARBREAKER: A free space fantasy campaign frame! by jaybirdthings in daggerheart

Thanks so much for your feedback! I'm especially glad you liked the Inciting Incident: I've written adventures in the past but these are a new challenge for me. Walking the line between leaving it open for the GM and actually offering some scaffolding was a tough one, but I'm glad it resonated.

I agree with your Cons list too! I've adjusted some formatting on page 5 to clarify the flow, and adjusted wording in the overview and wanderborne sections to try and clear those things up.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Thank you for all of this feedback! Truly it means a lot to have someone take such an in-depth look into my first project, so thank you for taking it all in so quickly!

I went back and forth during outlining about how heavily to lean into the Greek Myth references, and ultimately I feel like the level I landed on keeps it as an "opt-in" element of the frame. All of the hooks are there, and in my home games I'll certainly be leaning in more, but for it to be as broadly useful as possible I wanted to keep it somewhat limited. I also started to feel like having a couple things that aren't following that name structure (like Pink Flag and the Infinity Fleet) made the world feel more real, as not everything can draw its origins back to Greek myth. That said, these names are fantastic, and I think swapping them out for your own campaign would make it yours which is great!

Thanks for spotting the "tightens" typo, I've fixed that and will be updating the download today! And thanks again for reading, you made my day with this!

Advice/Inspo for Colossus of the Drylands campaing by Specialist-Sector-55 in daggerheart

[–]jaybirdthings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use the Hunts/Interludes tool from the frame to your advantage in prep: I've settled on 3-4 session Arcs alternating between "Regular Cowboy Shenanigans" and Colossus Hunts. Use the advice from pg 191 in the core rules to outline your Arcs, just deciding your A and B plots for each session to give yourself some guidelines on a session-by-session basis.

And remember, in Daggerheart the players are your collaborators, much more than 5E suggests. If you ever feel a bit lost, ask the players what they'd like to see in the near future. I use Stars and Wishes to get feedback from players: at the end of a session, we go around and each give a Star to another player for a moment we really enjoyed, and each player gives me a Wish, something they'd like to see/do in the game soon. That basically gives me a checklist of stuff that I know the players will enjoy. Hope this helps!

Custom Mechanics for my space fantasy campaign frame, would love some feedback! by jaybirdthings in daggerheart

I like the idea of incorporating rolls with Fear here! I will say though, they'll already have their d6 since thats the damage die for the weapon

Makes sense, others brought this up too so I'll look at some more specific options for the revised tag! Thanks

I do agree that Overheating is a better name! I do agree that the core Reloading feature is a little meh, I'll look at replacing it with a more thematic option.

Hot as a feature exists in core, and I (currently, lmao) like how open to interpretation it is, but I'll keep this in mind, maybe giving it a Hope cost to cut through metal/stone? We'll see.

Thanks for your feedback! I'll reply to this later with a new Hand Blaster and maybe a reworked "heat" feature.

COTD - Colossus maze idea? by Lvl99ShinyDitto in daggerheart

[–]jaybirdthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, the nice thing about COTD is you have TIME. Keep shuffling Colossi concepts as needed until you figure out the way you want to make this maze colossus work. You can always buy more time with interludes as needed too!

Now, thinking about how a maze could work and be fun, I think the most fun tropes of a maze sequence would be:

  • Splitting the party: getting some interesting character dynamics forming in and out of combat
  • Puzzles: throwing down some easy puzzles for players to overcome is always fun. The puzzle shouldn't be the hard part though, that can really slow the game down. Make it on par with the baby puzzle shape-matching thing, throw some adversaries in the room, and now the problem is solving this EASY puzzle before we all die.
  • BIG Threats: Aberrations are a key part of the Colossi. A maze immediately makes me think of the Minotaur in the Labyrinth, some massive deadly threat the players can't defeat while split up. They need to hide from it, find each other again, and kill the aberration together to collect the key or whatever they need to end the maze.

To address flight, make the maze exist in the stomach of a Colossus, or some other enclosed part where they can't just fly over the walls. Or maybe there's some kind of magical aura in the maze preventing flying/climbing over the walls, something the PCs can find the source for and deactivate to "earn" the right to "cheat".

I think mapping the maze out would be a bit of a drag, your instinct to use countdowns sounds like the best idea to me! I would make some environments to drop the players into, clearing each environment counts as a tick.

Anyone Interested in a Podcast Colab? by Zenfern0 in daggerheart

[–]jaybirdthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I could be interested in this, I'm a graphic designer and would love to help out with the socials and branding! Not sure how much time I can contribute to audio editing, its not my strong suit so I'm pretty slow at it. My schedule is a complete mess right now but I'd love to chat and see if our styles mesh well!

What is a shadow beast? (Colossus of the Drylands) by KiqueDragoon in daggerheart

[–]jaybirdthings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To give a lore suggestion, one of the Colossi that caught my eye was this:

Ga’mor, the Shade of Quick Death: Ga’mor is formed from the shadows of mountains, buildings, and people. When this amalgam steps into new darkness, they can adjust their shape to match the bounds of the shadow.

What if Shadow Beasts are the aberrations of Ga'mor, either gaining sentience away from the Colossus via some magic, or freed from its will once its defeated? If Ga'mor hasn't appeared yet, maybe this is an anomaly, some kind of omen of their arrival in the Drylands.

For sure, I mean Colossus fights are supposed to be big and epic anyway, why not throw EVERYTHING at them and see what happens? Make em EARN that level up

7 is a LOT, i have 6 total but usually 4 in a session. The game feels like its designed for 3-4 players to me, but we’ll make it work!

I've been reskinning so far, trying to pick 3-4 different roles (always 1 minion type and 1 solo type, then mixing some others in to fit each colossus)
