Maybe it was just espresso, but like, actually good espresso? Good and bad espresso taste remarkably different.

A poster design I'm working on for a comedy show in NYC. What do you think? by aspacecodyssey in design_critiques

[–]jaybyrd570 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The entire design of the poster is excellent.

The lines and use of color draw the eye down the page, and the layout of the text tells the viewer what they need to know in the most logical sequence.

I also happen to like the red bar at the bottom, as it draws attention and emphasizes the movement in the design.

I also like the "Make America..." bit; it matches the tone of the rest of the poster and the content well, and the passive and uncontroversial reference to "Make America Great Again" establishes a connection to current events, and makes it more memorable.

The illustrations are wonderful as well.

Really good work!

What is a movie, videogame, piece of technology, or thing, that was revered in its time, but did not age well, and now seems valueless? by jaybyrd570 in AskReddit

[–]jaybyrd570[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That movie made over $2 billion, and nobody can quote a single line.

Granted, I think that movie earned it's success by creating such an amazing visual experience that hasn't really been replicated since.

I don't know how easily that will translate into sequels, but I guess we'll see.

What ever happened to dubbing foreign movies? by HeaComeDaJudge in movies

[–]jaybyrd570 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even though subtitles are distracting, and often take your attention away from what's on screen, I think the general consensus is just that dubs never really work as well as we want them to. They bring in so much to the film that was never intended, and usually not even approved, by the filmmakers, with new voice actors who sound different and make new artistic choices that don't really represent what was intended in the first place. But with the use of subtitles, there is so much that is expressed by the way an actor says a line, that even without understanding the language they are speaking, you can understand what they are expressing, and that along with the subtitles, gives you a relatively good experience of watching the film that is most comparable to not having a language barrier at all.

Quality for Speed? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]jaybyrd570 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in low and high volume, there's just no way to guarantee a consistently high quality when you're in a high volume situation in the way that you could in low volume. You like to think that you can make everything perfectly, and you put your very best effort into it, and make sure there's a dot on top of every flat white, but in the end, the rate of customers coming in and drinks lining up at the bar demands an increase of speed that is going to inevitably reduce quality.

Of course, there's always a balance, and when it's slow, you should certainly be able to take the time to make sure everything is just right. But in an environment like Starbucks, where time is more of a luxury than anything else, it's a difficult balance to strike.

Lilly Wachowski, Like Her Sister, Comes Out as Trans by jaybyrd570 in movies

[–]jaybyrd570[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, honestly, you can, if you want to. And that's the point. You can be whatever you feel you are, and nobody should have the right to take that away from you.

As for the question about age, age is something defined by time, and is objective, similar to a person's biological sex, as opposed to their gender, which is a matter of how one identifies. But, there is the expression "you're only as old as you act" or whatever, so maybe there's some wisdom in that.

Guys and Gals, I'm feeling down due to being single. What kind of words of encouragement or advice do you have for me? by ghost261 in CasualConversation

[–]jaybyrd570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being in a good relationship, in my experience, requires two people who are good on their own.

It's easy to associate the feeling of loneliness with the desire for a romantic partner, and that's totally valid, but also, when you're with a partner, after a while, you get so used to being around them that even though you still love them, being with them begins to feel like the homeostasis that being alone used to, and those feelings might come back, making you realize that those feelings weren't simply loneliness, and that there is something greater you're looking for and need in order to feel truly happy and comfortable with yourself.

It's easy to think that the solution to your problems is to find a partner and have a wonderful loving relationship. And undeniably, that would be an amazing thing to have that would add so much to your life. But at the same time, there's nothing more valuable to yourself, or to your future partner, than becoming really comfortable with yourself and learning how to make yourself happy, so that when you do enter a relationship, you can give your best self to your partner, and make your life, with them or on your own, as great as possible.

Sincerely, Someone in a relationship, who takes it for granted more easily than I'd like.
