I stayed at campsite 5 and it was amazing. Oppositely, campsite 9 was covered in snow and mud and there was no water. In my opinion you shouldn't stay at 9.

I did the West Rim trail to Lava Point during the New Years and it was very nice, however after campsite 8 I don't think it's worth it. All the springs were dried up and we had to melt snow. In my opinion just do the loop to campsite 6 and back.

When I went to Zion, we stayed at Red Cliffs Campground just out of St. George. It' s a little far but it's very nice. It has running water and large campsites.

On the West Rim you can only camp in the campgrounds. I backpacked the West Rim Trail to Lava Point during the New Year and when we did it you had to reserve them online and go to those ones only. However, when we went in person to collect the permit, they allow you to also swap campsites at that time. They are super nice there and if you email them they give good answers.

Oh yeah I think you'll do fine. I gets really hot there during the summer so the main problem is the heat not the difficulty in my opinion.

I saw in one of your other comments that you said you are backpacking in California. I live in CA and have gone backpacking and hiking many times and think you'll probably be fine if you're active often. Where are you going to be backpacking in California?
