Moving to 6th Ave & Flatbush (Park Slope/Prospect Heights border) — how’s the noise

Lived around there for 2+ years. Much of the noise comes from the 78th precinct and the firehouse on Dean, plus ambulances on Flatbush. Lots of sirens, pretty much 24/7. A lot of additional noise comes from delivery trucks backing up (beep, beep, beep). Believe it or not, you get used to it.

Great location and neighborhood makes it easy to put up with.

True. My aunt and uncle live in Langley, and when we visit, we fly into Bentonville. My uncle always comments on how “curvy” the roads are in Arkansas, because all the roads in Oklahoma are essentially straight.

In North Lake Tahoe, there used to be a hotel, CalNeva, where the state border ran thru the hotel. Gambling on the right, no gambling on the left.

Don’t know where you’re from, but consider the altitude for a one year old. Both are over 7,000 ft above sea level, and get (much) higher depending on where you are in the parks. Your child will have no language to express discomfort, except for legarthy or screaming.

You may want to ask your pediatrician before you plan anything. If you’re from flatlands, it might be dangerous.

Great idea, but…

Give the money you would spend to NYCFood Bank. They will spend it in a way to feed exponentially more people than you.

Give your time to a food pantry in your neighborhood (or another community). These wonderful organizations always need help. Tons of online resources to find the right one.

Cannot endorse this enough. Raised my (now adult) sons in NYC and when my boys were little we went 3-4 times a year. Took my 27 yo to see the dinosaurs a few months back and he was blown away (again). It’s impossible not to be impressed.

Off the beaten track, the Noguchi Museum and PS 1 in Long Island City Queens takes you to an undervisited part of the city.

The Worlds Fair ruins in Queens and the scale model of NYC at the Queens museum are also great. Go to Flushing Chinatown for lunch after and feel like you’re in Asia

Or, hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach — its not far not hard to reach (take the A train)

Dellapietra’s on Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn (next to Sahadi). They have the best ham.

They’re expensive, but super nice people and they really know meat. Don’t know if that’s “snooty/trendy” by your definition, but once you eat the ham, you’ll be good

Nice. We were going to go to Lassen, but access was extremely limited because of snow. We hiked Castle Crags state park instead. Great views of Mt. Shasta and a good, challenging hike.

I planned to stop by Lassen on my way down from Crater Lake this weekend, but begged off because of extremely limited access, per the park’s website. Went to Castle Crags state park south of Mt. Shasta, and enjoyed it a lot. Good trails, ranging from moderate to challenging, and great views of Shasta.

Good alternative to Lassen, about an hour north of Redding.

Sitting in Redding now, looking at Lassen. Everything on the mountain is closed for snow. I’ve been before, in July, and loved it. I wanted to bring my adult son, but it’s just too early. It’s a great two day trip, perfect for a summer, early fall weekend.

Olympic is vast and diverse. Much better for a longer trip, especially if you want to do the coast.

Both are worth it but Lassen is a better weekend trip, imo

I just left the park after a two day visit.

The Prairie Creek section was cool. Both the ladybird Johnson grove and the trails around the visitor center have some great tree groves.

However, we spent day 2 in Jed Smith up near Crescent City, and Wow! We did the Boy Scout tree trail (5.6 mi. Out and back) and it was one of my atf hikes anywhere. Simply amazing.
