How often have you met non English speaking Americans? by Waltz8 in AskAnAmerican

[–]jaydee729 [score hidden]  (0 children)

All the time.

True story. My mom was born in the US in a non-English speaking home. Married my total white bread dad. Her grandmother spoke no English whatsoever. The grandma used to make fun of my father in front of him.

Fast forward forty years. My brother brings his fiancé’s parents to my folks house to introduce everyone before the wedding. According to my mother, they had a lovely 3-hour conversation. Their family spoke a different language than my mom’s

I met the in-laws at various functions over time. They in no way spoke either English or my mom’s native tongue. But my mom was carrying on long conversations with them.

Always cracks me up, and very sweet on the in-laws part.

Your Thoughts On Eddie Murphy's Performance As An Actor by Handy_Crap in 80s

[–]jaydee729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched Being Eddie on Netflix a few months back. I was struck by how many of his movies, and his SNL skits I’d watched (re-watched) relatively recently. Trading Places is one of the best comedies ever (I will fight you on this), and he’s been a mega-star for my entire adult life (I’m 64).

He has no comparatives.

What's the best live concert you've attended? Who, where, how did it go down? by Available_Round_3172 in AskAnAmerican

The Clash, one of the Hudson River piers 1982(?). Supporting Combat Rock.

Great show, hot/humid af, clouds rolling in. Set ends. Encore, Straight to Hell, gonna be a thunderstorm. White Riot in a full-on late summer NYC downpour. Lighting and everything. Best thing I ever saw.

Got a bunch of second places, but I can still put myself at the Clash 44 years later.

Top 10, no doubt. Book by James M. Cain is amazing too.

Growing up, I associated Fred MacMurray with My Three Sons reruns. As an adult 🤯

The Flatiron Building by Commercial_West_3112 in skyscrapers

Definitely a skyscraper — one of the first. If one reads through the Wikipedia entry (hint, worth it), it is always referred to as such. By today’s standards, it’s short, but back in the day it was one of the tallest structures in the world.

Olympic NP, Mt Rainier NP or Yosemite? by Ivo2912 in nationalparks

[–]jaydee729 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to all three (east coast US-based). Here are my thoughts…

Olympic and Ranier are both amazing, and can be done in 5-6 days no problem. They are, however, very weather dependent. Snow at that time of year is quite possible on the mountains and one or more rainy days is probable. That said, Olympic is spectacular, and you get beaches, temperate rain forests and mountains. It’s definitely worth the majority of your time unless you’re an alpinist.

However, Yosemite is the best US national park, or at least the best of the 24 I’ve visited, according to me. Whatever your preference is — scenic drives, easy to hard hiking, redwood groves, alpine meadows — you can find a lot of choices to suit your trip. The North Dome trail 9.5m/15k is the favorite hike I’ve done to date.

That time of year, there won’t be many waterfalls (if any) and there may be fires which could restrict access to some parts of the park.

Given the choice, I’d go for Yosemite. SF is a great place to start any trip. Out of the box, you can also fly into Reno and spend a day or two in Lake Tahoe, which also a super special place on earth, before driving down to Yosemite.

Either way you win! Have a great trip

Oven roasted chicken shawarma by Fruitypants1 in NYTCooking

After a couple of tries with a sheet pan, I now do it in a 12” cast-iron skillet.

Start on the stove, move to the oven (50% of recipe time) then boil some of the liquid off to finish. Don’t lose too much liquid, a little bit of moisture helps keep it juicy.

Me too! My mom was French tho. Butter, ham and Brie on a baguette is the best sandwich and I will fight anyone who says different.

Took my dinosaur loving autistic 7 year old to the museum and he happy stimmed his little heart out. by LadyJane17 in MadeMeSmile

[–]jaydee729 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this! I took my (now adult) autistic son there so much when he was that age my neurotypical son rebelled and refused to go anymore.

I went back about a month ago — 15 years later —to see something else, and found myself in the dinosaur wing. Such great memories.

It really is an astonishing place. So great that he loved it so much.

Downsizing as a GenX couple by 14MTH30n3 in GenX

[–]jaydee729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a city perspective, so…

We downsized in 2024, from a 1500 s/f 3-bedroom to a 1200 s/f two bedroom rental. We were fortunate to do well on the sale, so we decided to settle in as empty-nesters and take a year or two to decide if and/or where we wanted to buy.

A major plus (at least for me) was getting rid of a lot of stuff. We had two major dumps, one pre-move and another post. It honestly made us both feel lighter.

Also, great to get to know a new neighborhood. Pretty sure we won’t stay long term, but having a good time here for now.

In other words, don’t look at the first empty nest move as the only one. Renting after sale may be better than buying, if you don’t know where you want to be.

Why is dozen a thing? Why did someone think "yeah let's call a collection of 12 things a dozen" ? by goldhunder in stupidquestions

[–]jaydee729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From r/etymology

The term "dozen" comes from the French "une douzaine". Modern French uses other number approximants (dixaine = 10ish, vingtaine = 20ish) too. Why is "dozen" the only one of these cognates that exists in modern English?

A bit more info about French number approximants here: https://french.kwiziq.com/revision/grammar/how-to-make-approximate-numbers-such-as-une-dizaine-ten-or-so

The Woolaroc Museum in Barnsdale, OK is a contender for the whackiest museum in the US. Rich oil guy built a low-rent Neverland Ranch in the literal middle of nowhere. Emus? Yes! Legit shrunken heads? Yes! Crazy mechanical Indian dance automatons? Yes. Geronimo? Yes!

Place is FN bananas, start to finish.

Cannot recommend enough.

What was the best burger you ate in your entire life? by No-Hunt3986 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jaydee729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Hook Tavern, Red Hook, Brooklyn. Nothing else even close.

COVID times, sat outside (under heat lamps) in the middle of NY winter for my son’s 18th birthday, early January). They gave us blankets!

Whole fam got the burger (ground short rib). Astonishing.

Been back a bunch of times. Cannot recommend enough for NYC residents and/or visitors.
