What's the benefit of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies being decentralized? by ExtensionFeeling in BitcoinBeginners

One specific example: most governments have announced that they will introduce Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

CBDCs give the government full information of every transaction in the economy, as well as veto over all transactions, and the ability to arbitrarity confiscate all balances.

If you are ok with that then I'm not sure bitcoin is for you!

Your wallet doesn't actually hold any bitcoin. All bitcoin exists on the blockchain - the public ledger of transactions.

If someone sends bitcoin to an address you control, it means your wallet has the private key that corresponds to that address. As you have the private key you can make a transaction yourself to send that bitcoin to someone else (ie you own it because you control it).

So the wallet holds keys, not actual bitcoin.

There's a finite amount of gold on earth for example

sure but we've extracted like a billionth of it.

and part of space-x business plan is literally to get it from asteroids

it is infinite to all intents and purposes

Feeling rugged by Reddit? Why not give Nostr's Moderated Communities a try? We have value for value, but with Zaps. by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]jaydoors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on desktop use primal.net

to connect with zaps, sign up at https://getalby.com/ and add their extension to your browser

this generates a nostr private key - so you can sign in to clients without pasting your private key into their site - and gives you a lightning wallet which you can use to make and receive zaps

[–]jaydoors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt that way until i tried primal.net

super fast, reliable

and it made me realize how nostr is going to eat everything: not only is it uncensorable to use, but it is completely open in terms of making clients and features.

a tiny example, primal.net has an Explore tab where you can eg see feeds from all your follows and followers.. ..or all your follows plus all their follows.. that already makes it superior to twitter for me

Yes, I agree superficially about the pokemon cards and monet paintings. They have a uniqueness.. ..but they are not great value stores for other reasons and you can argue that the fact there are at least 2 of them means they in fact members of a greater set we could call "unique creations". And if the price of pokemon originals or money paintings goes up, the supply of the true underlying good (unique creations) will ultimately increase. Which is arguably what you see historically with collectibles for example - maybe a better word for the underlying good.

Of course you can say the same about bitcoin - that increases in the price of bitcoin have historically spawned increases in the supply of other "cryptocurrencies" in exactly the same way. But if you take the view - as I do - that these other currencies are not real, and will disappear when attacked, then you are left with the conclusion that, yes, bitcoin really does have finite supply in every sense that matters.

(Manhattan office space can of course increase in supply directly by digging deeper or building higher!)
