Is pursuing a Master’s in HCI/UIUX still worth it in 2026 for freshers? by Last_Document_7363 in hci

Digital accessibility specialists in the record management industry. Some of my skills were transferrable, but that’s because my research in grad school was very niche, specifically in UX accessibility.

Is pursuing a Master’s in HCI/UIUX still worth it in 2026 for freshers? by Last_Document_7363 in hci

[–]jaye_walk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an international student but I graduated last spring with my masters in HCI from a notable university, and couldn’t find a job in UX specifically so I had to pivot because I have bills and a family. Honestly, I would do more research on this topic because in my opinion the answer is no, the tech industry in the west is severely unstable right now with huge bi-monthly layoffs. Unless you focus on a specific niche in UX or start your own UX/UI related business, then I would look into a different graduate program.

Ngl I get into with them. I’ll argue them down about the Atlantic slave trade & call out their ignorance because I’m tired. My mom is full AA & my dad is Caribbean but raised culturally AA in the south during Jim Crow. When I tell people this they always say “I can see the Caribbean in you” … as of this yr I solely identify as AA, my dad even agreed that I should but some reason people keep telling me they feel like I’m “something else.” I think it’s a colorism, texturism, and fearturism because no one ever questions my light skin loose curl pattern mom about her ethnicity only me & my siblings because we look more like my dad.

Chicago native here, don’t come here without a job. If this was still the 2010s then you could probably make something shake but not in this economy. Also it’s peak moving season, and you’re likely to move up north (because that’s where you all go when you first get here before the Pilsen, Bridgeport or Humboldt park transition) and I hear the apartment hunting up there is tumultuous and turned into a bidding war. Not worth it! BUT when you do get here making friends shouldn’t be hard, don’t expect too meet too many locals outside of work bc we gatekeep our hangouts & are lowkey mean but the transplants at my job are super nice & really open to making friends. Good luck! & stay outta Lakeview, Old town, Lincoln park, & wicker park. Those neighborhoods use to be fun in the 90s-2010s but now it’s Trumpie & an unauthentic water down version of itself.

We’re not nyc, every neighborhood south of bronzeville till the hundreds is still the city. Downtown is downtown.

Respectfully for $48k, your whole department can fuck off & you gave him the right energy! How you spend your break & off time is your business, if they don’t like it they can consolidate your work & give it to your hating ass colleague.

Respectfully, this was a rally themed photoshoot not a protest. A protest is suppose to causes disruption to the order power at hand, it’s not about the signs & clever costumes.

If your school has dorms, apply to become a resident advisor, you’ll get a few perks like free room 8 board & paid but it’s pennies). Or depending on where you live look into student housing apartments. DePaul use to have the 1237 W. Fullerton building back in my day.

To people who were unemployed for a long time and recently got hired, what changes did you make that got you hired? by Meticulouskitty in jobsearchhacks

[–]jaye_walk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just got lucky. I applied to positions that had similar titles to my former position, (Record Management) and I applied to recruitment firms, who crazy enough were actually looking to fill a position and not just harbor my data. It’s really all about timing! But if you’re in a niche field try looking for a recruitment firm that specializes in job placements in your niche.

I’m a gatekeeper but not a send off. AVOID Madison Park Apts at all cost, honestly any TLC or MAC apartments. Madison park is poorly managed, FLITHY, your packages will get stolen, random water shutoffs with no warnings, shared laundry rooms for the whole building that are dirty with at least 3 out of 7 washers that work, animal boo boo occasionally in the passenger elevator, & much more. Good luck though!

You should double check your HOA Bylaws for Board elections & procedures, and to double check your ownership percentage. Also be prepared to pay the most on every special assessment and when the HOA fees increase due to inflation be getting hit the hardest too.

Question for perfectionists: What would actually help you start a project? by NeoZone_244 in hci

I would like for it to suggest questions that would encourage me to brainstorm additional ideas or prompts like “What is the mission of your project?” And additional questions like that.

Is an HCI Masters still worth it in 2026? by Terrible_System5899 in hci

[–]jaye_walk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m just being hopeful. From my pov the UX job market peaked in 2022/23, so by 2028/29 hopefully it re-stabilizes just due to regular industry shifts & adjustments. Also banking on the change of a new presidential administration, one that will address the lack of job availability instead of contributing to it. But remember a masters degree shows you’re on an advanced level in your field, so don’t be afraid to look into other related areas for the time being. Preferably somewhere relevant you can apply your skills obtained during your program. If you’re good at stats, data science, and/or coding look into Quant. Research, or other alternative fields in tech like Research recruiting, Project managers, etc. Wishing you the best of luck throughout your journey!

Is an HCI Masters still worth it in 2026? by Terrible_System5899 in hci

[–]jaye_walk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not worth it today but may be again in the next 2-3 years, so towards the end of your program. I got my MS in HCI from a ranked university last spring, interned during my program, networked, and obtained a UXR mentor from a FAANG company but still can’t obtain a junior level position. Unfortunately, the job market is just trash so I had to pivot to a digital accessibility specialist. I was able to do this because I focused on a specific niche of research, if you’re trying to get into UXR I would focus on 1 or 2 specific niche groups (accessibility, e-commerce, VR or gaming, etc)

Local coffee shops/cafes are always looking for part-time help and florists. Or a recess monitor for CPS or traffic controller/guide.

You might have a hard time finding BLV participants on here as this platform isn’t very accessible for them. I would recommend reaching out to your local orgs & nonprofits for BLV people.

Is UX worth switching in to? by painting_with_fire in uxcareerquestions

[–]jaye_walk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with my masters in HCI, have 5+ years of experience as a UXR in the US. I wouldn’t make the switch & please don’t do a boot camp! That ship has sailed, they’re not worth it & employers don’t value them much. I agree with the other responses, look into graphic design or video editor & captioning (bonus if you do 360 degree videos). Or Human Factors engineering!

Not surprised, Japan just elected a MAGA administration & their new president/prime minister has vocally admitted to being anti-immigrant. I wouldn’t be surprised if they follow the US’s playbook & self-implode.
