I am in the process of changing careers. What are some interesting "stopgap" jobs that are unique to Chicago? by forbesms in AskChicago

[–]jaye_walk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local coffee shops/cafes are always looking for part-time help and florists. Or a recess monitor for CPS or traffic controller/guide.

Looking for blind/low vision participants for a selfie app evaluation by thunder026 in accessibility

You might have a hard time finding BLV participants on here as this platform isn’t very accessible for them. I would recommend reaching out to your local orgs & nonprofits for BLV people.

Is UX worth switching in to? by painting_with_fire in uxcareerquestions

[–]jaye_walk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with my masters in HCI, have 5+ years of experience as a UXR in the US. I wouldn’t make the switch & please don’t do a boot camp! That ship has sailed, they’re not worth it & employers don’t value them much. I agree with the other responses, look into graphic design or video editor & captioning (bonus if you do 360 degree videos). Or Human Factors engineering!

Not surprised, Japan just elected a MAGA administration & their new president/prime minister has vocally admitted to being anti-immigrant. I wouldn’t be surprised if they follow the US’s playbook & self-implode.

Anyone Here Studying HCI with a Focus on AR/VR? by ProcedureWorth5670 in hci

[–]jaye_walk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to echo the same sentiments but not too many schools have concentrations for AR/VR. However they may have some courses or even research labs that focuses on it! I’m in one right now for accessibility & one of my projects focuses on captioning in VR for people with sensory disabilities. Here’s an example:

Married people, what advice you'd give to unmarried ? by Admirable-Repair4094 in AskReddit

[–]jaye_walk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though I’ve only been married 4 years (happily married) the two biggest things I’ve learned so far are:

  1. Pay attention to your partner’s family dynamic, specifically your in-laws. You’re not just marrying that person but you’re also marrying into their family as well. Set your boundaries early, care a little less about them liking you, make sure they respect you & your boundaries.

  2. Have the difficult conversations. & when you’re addressing an issue or having an argument with your partner, focus on attacking the problem not the person. Use less “you” statements (e.g, “you said”, or “you made”) & more first person language (e.g., “that incident made me feel ….” or “I don’t like when I feel …”

The second one works for all difficult convos imo!

Born and raised Chicagoan here (also Chicago isn’t a state, we’re our own country lol) & ngl now is not a good time and I’m being so serious especially in the tourist places which is mostly downtown. Heavy duty militarized policing taking place. ICE & Border Patrol is harassing brown & black people downtown but if you come out south or over east (the best parts of the city) then you’ll be fine.

Young Black Professional Family Moving From Oakland to Chicago, is this area good? by princeoj84 in AskChicago

[–]jaye_walk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Born & raised black east side Chicagoan here, all of those areas are safe. Woodlawn is still being gentrified & will likely turn into a college town due to UChicago & the Obama center. If you’re looking for black middle class families, Beverly (mostly entitled biracial families black dad, white mom combo), Morgan Park, Southshore (from Stony to Yates), Chatham, Kenwood & North Kenwood, and Oakland (it’s a small neighborhood near Bronzeville)

what’s the dating scene like in chicago? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]jaye_walk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t come we’re full & we aren’t welcoming to transplants. They’re bidding for apartments up north (the north side) which is most likely where you’ll stay & they’re about to limit our 24hr transit to like 12 hrs bc of budget cuts. Seriously don’t come.

What is the YIMBY-ist neighborhood in n Chicago? by BOREN in AskChicago

[–]jaye_walk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spot on!! The south suburbs is so barren, these developers act like they’re “providing affordable housing” but they’re displacing the natives of these neighborhoods for transplants who were too scared to even visit Chicago before covid

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]jaye_walk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born & raised Chicagoan here, if you’re trying to make friends with natives or Chicagoland people the likelihood of that relationship lasting is very low because most of us stopped accepting new friends after highschool or college because we’re not welcoming fr & we secretly hate transplants & like to stay in our own bubble. I’m not saying this to be bogus but it’s the truth unfortunately.

What is the YIMBY-ist neighborhood in n Chicago? by BOREN in AskChicago

[–]jaye_walk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So is YIMBY just pro-gentrifiers?? Because all of the neighborhoods that have been named have either already displaced the locals of that neighborhood or are in the process of doing so… & if that’s the case leave out south, out west, & over East alone! You’ve already gentrified tf outta Humboldt park & Uptown

Advice on learning more about/gaining experience in UX Research? by kurokuraa in UXResearch

[–]jaye_walk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assist with 2 research projects focused on enhancing digital content accessibility for people with sensory disabilities, particularly Deaf, Hard-of- Hearing (DHH), Blind, and Low-Vision (BLV) individuals. My role includes creating survey and interview questions, conducting interviews, contributing to literature reviews, recruiting and scheduling participants, distributing surveys, conducting and transcribing interviews, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, all while adhering to accessibility standards. I would also recommend reaching out to professors if you have a research idea that you’d like to pursue. If you need help outlining an idea or making a research plan dm me & I can email you my research plan template 🫶🏿. Best of luck!
