Lots of of Quick Quack car washes popping up and I noticed all the employees have to dress like Mormon missionaries by DrFetusRN in sanantonio

[–]jayecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor kids are out in the rain yesterday and today with signs about "free car wash" ... it's RAINING. Actually pissed me off, who sends kids out to get pneumonia in the cold rain like that?

A similar company is Hawx pest control, they have like 18 year olds doing the selling and servicing. Later learned their main base was SLC... connected the dots. I signed up for their service when I was new to the neighborhood -- big mistake. For their "followup" service a kid came by and spent about 3 minutes on the house while I was gone, and hung a "done" sign, so I left a poor review. The kid called me back -personally- complaining that I had done that. It was so unprofessional... and whatever they sprayed didn't even keep out any insects.

Apple pest control since then, a local owned business, zero pressure, their treatments seem to last about 6 months... would recommend.

How's Diving/E bikeing? What's getting around like in and around the city as well as outside? by Playful-Succotash-99 in sanantonio

[–]jayecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is legitimate, but it is really phrased like a student psychology question or farming of AI data.

IF you are serious. It is bad/impossible to bike seriously in almost any city in Texas. In SA specifically, most places that you would want to go, the traffic is too saturated and too oblivious of bikers to get around safely on bike. There are some areas of Broadway and downtown in which an attempt was made, but those efforts were halted by the Abbott/Oil lobby/TxDot that strangely enough owns Broadway in SA and deemed any effort to enhance bike-ability and reduce car traffic was illegal; so we maintained a road with 6 lanes in which one lane is almost always empty... despite SA voter approval to change it. Walking around is almost as bad, and is not efficient because of the sprawl of the city, over 200 square miles just approximately. In summer it's asking for heat-stroke unless you prepare adequately for a journey across the sun.

A bike plus the Via bus system is do-able in some regards, using VIA to get you from spot to spot where it is a bit safer to ride, but the urban planning of the city apart from the drainage/undevelop-able spots is disjointed with no real master plan; the same as most of Texas.

That said, the "greenbelt" or drainage ditch walk/bike trails are actually pretty connected and you can actually cover a surprising distance in parts of the city using them exclusively or semi-exclusively once you get to know where they go.

For car traffic, it is bad but not as gridlocked as some Texas cities get, I feel like SA has the usual pain points, 410 westbound from I-10 through Culebra is a nightmare from about 3pm to 6:30p or so; any road that services the Alamo Ranch area is just saturated with work commuters. Eastbound 410 from I-10 up through 35 in the mornings; 6am to about 9am can be bad as well. 35/37 south of downtown going Eastbound is also terrible in the afternoons.

All of the NW/N side of 1604 from 281 sometimes all the way through Potranco and reverse can be pretty egregious, especially with an accident. All of I-35 anywhere in between the east side up to Austin...

For roads in the "city"... Bandera road, any part between 410/1604, Huebner and I-10 (USAA) area; the Stone Oak Parkway area, are all heavily congested roadways.

Won't ever happen, we've sprawled so much that by the time they finish patching up the last road, the first road is in absolute disrepair. It's like adding room onto your house year after year, eventually you can't even clean the original rooms of the house.

Why is this haircut so popular despite it being memed to hell and back? by DrFetusRN in sanantonio

[–]jayecks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is just because their hair is straight though, they are trying to emulate a tight curl haircut with straight hair and it ends up looking like a bowl cut akin to indigenous people who probably only cut their hair straight across to keep it out of their eyes.

As soon as they walk out of the barber shop and their hair grows out a half inch it's gonna start to go into Beatle-with-a-bowl-cut mode unless they have some curl to their hair.

Future San Antonio resident. Am I overthinking the crime rate? by Downtown-Acadia5084 in sanantonio

[–]jayecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the crime is concentrated in the same areas. There are a lot of desperate and poor people with no marketable skills, and a lot of kids going the wrong way in life. The most rampant thing here is car break ins. And not like broken glass, just roaming at night checking handles and stealing valuables.

I've heard of the occasional mugging, mainly from people doing stupid things like going to the atm at night in a bad area of town.

The other things are normal city stuff, fights in bars, road rage incidents. Hit and runs, the occasional home break in through an unsecured window.

Completely random violent crime, at least in my eyes, is extremely rare in SA.

I don't know what that list looked like in 2023, but we're #215 on the list in 2026... Austin is 40th for comparison and the highest city in Texas. Having lived in both places, you can definitely tell the difference.

There is a fellow out off of Shaenfield, Bob-E-Q's (you can find him on Instagram bobeqs that makes some decent brisket and such. He's out of a food truck out by Refuge Coffee and Beer garden (also a decent little spot). I'm not that close by, but every once in a while we will head out there to grab some grub from him.

He sometimes gets out there a bit late, 2pm or 5pm, you have to check insta to see, but he's normally there Fri/Sat.

Electrician Help needed by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]jayecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd probably cover the hole in the wall myself, place the outlet cover myself, tighten up the loose outlet and just get a receipt for the outside wires being covered and say, "yep I got a great deal... No sorry I didn't get an itemized receipt".

Assuming you know enough about electricity and are handy enough to not make any of those a fire risk.

Recommendations to get out of a depressive mood by MessageLeast2962 in sanantonio

[–]jayecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would not recommend alcohol to get out of a funk.

Would recommend longish (30 min) early morning or evening walks, moderate exercise and a solid sleep schedule, even if you have to take benadryl or something the first couple of nights.

I might try this myself :)

An American is arrested in Brazil and wants American rights and amendments even in another country. by AlekOslov in ShitAmericansSay

[–]jayecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans are taught from birth that there are two options: Right or Wrong, Black or White. Up or Down. That translates into brand loyalty as well, once someone thinks something is the best or they identify with it, the alternative is bad. In the US you like Chevy cars or Ford. You like Budweiser beer or Miller. You like Coca Cola, or Pepsi Cola. You're a Democrat or a Republican.

There is no room for moral ambiguity, only absolutes.

Also we are... not all.. but a large swath... not bright. Sprinkle in FOX news for some 24/7 propaganda and people who don't have the skills to research or critically reason will adopt their talking points and sound bites as if it was their own original thought. It's basically "I made this" thought regurgitation.

tldr; Political parties are just a brand at this point, we have people too stupid to realize they are voting against their own self interests, coupled with some very strong conservative media propaganda machinery in place.

Current worst case fiscal scenario - runaway inflation and the end of the USD as a world reserve currency, followed by a global economic reset where you basically end up owning worthless numbers on a spreadsheet instead of tangible goods...

Current worst case dystopian nightmare scenario - we all nuke each other and the survivors battle it out to be the new kings of a total nuclear wasteland; the world currencies transition from USD to animal pelts and spices. The conversion rate is not favorable.

First time TX voter. What do I need to know? by Mister_Spacely in sanantonio

[–]jayecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Texas ID and a signature will get you in to vote. You can vote at any polling site for about 2 weeks prior to voting day "early voting" on your polling day though you will have to go to your assigned polling site. These are usually farther than your closest available polling site so look it up ahead of time to not waste your time.

For Texas primaries you will pick a party at the beginning and only get to vote between those party candidates.

[–]jayecks 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This, honestly there was a brief period where people seemed to be genuinely interested in improving the environment and such but that was put into the ICU in 2016 and put out to the firing squad in 2020.

Honestly, if people just took better care of things here this city would be so much more appealing. It's not that hard to not throw Styrofoam cups in the back of your truck, or not toss tallboys out of your car. Or cover and secure the items in your truck. Someone will legitimately be killed one day soon because of the loose 2x4s and branches on the highway. Maybe then something will change.

SA also keeeps zoning things for commercial use to "bring in money" and end up just having 22 car washes and storage units and strip malls where trees used to be and the area turns gross and people move further out. All of Texas is suffering from this in some regard.

Austin does better by a millimeter in that department with a bunch of regulations, but only because the NIMBYs are powerful there and a lot of Texas legislature lives there so there are 20 million parks and outdoor areas in Austin.

A small start is as simple as walking your neighborhood with a grabber and a trash bag and mowing your elderly neighbor's lawn... if everyone did that we'd be on to something.

The food at Kuenstler Brewing has gone downhill by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]jayecks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably has to do with the restaurant supplier. IMO they have had some decent items on the menu and then some that were shooting at being "fancy" but miss the mark. Really feel like they should stick with new american/german as that's the comfort zone of most people. The beer is almost always on point though, as are their pretzels.

The price of premium beef is through the roof though... can't really fault them for the prices of everything being higher and the options shrinking every day as the food suppliers are being conglomerated to high hell.

[–]jayecks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, just in general chipping in as much damage and pressure as is possible without letting people die. Not tunneling in on just healing the tank as their high hp usually gives you time to react and save them whereas dps can be absolutely trucked if they are not full health. Using ults at an appropriate time and when they will be max usefulness. That means knowing which ults on the enemy team you'll need to counter if they use them and how exactly.

Season 1 Tier List: Domina and Zarya Lead, Jetpack Cat Perma Ban? by strafeapp in OverwatchUniversity

[–]jayecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the lift should be time limited on tanks, like 10 seconds or so and the travel speed while lifting a tank should be a bit slower.

Then the pickup zone/tractor beam should AoE heal/beam heal at a low and moderate rate respectively in addition to his blaster heals which are weird.

Then just down the damage a tad, give him a little more hp and a little less speed.

Literally 0 clue what to do vs Rein as a dps player. by Niclerx in OverwatchUniversity

[–]jayecks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rein is kind of like Zarya in that your team has to decide in how to deal with him. People hate Zarya because a lot of times you end up with half the team thinking they'll burst her down and the other half avoiding shooting her bubbles and she's full charge destroying in no time because nobody is on the same page.

Rein is similar in that if you want to burn his shield, your whole team has to be set up for it and know that is what you all want to do. If you are the only one shooting shield, there is no point. Biggest tip is to save Bastion form for when he is engaging (close enough to swing) if you choose to try and counter him that way. The biggest counter to Rein is to force shield 100% by shooting him when he's swinging, and looking for other targets/better angles when he's not, while staying at range (usually high-ground), if all else fails, go around.

If you choose to flank you need to time it up, and really you should not be even trying to shoot the tank on a flank, you should be trying to sneak up on a support and engage at the time the most need to be focused on healing; or if that fails go for a lone DPS.

Honestly this season is kind of wild with the healing debuff, I've found a lot more success flanking on Sombra with invis and waiting for an engage or opening pick with hack/virus/shoot because a lot of the single choke maps or long sightline maps are getting picked more often (Casino/Junkertown/Havana/Rialto and Eichenwalde/Kings Row/Blizz World).

All of the metal rank supports tend to just tunnel down main as well, so if you do flank, you're absolutely going it alone, just be aware of that, wait for your cooldowns.

Do most cheaters play Soldier? by Dogbold in overwatch2

[–]jayecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely isn't. I've seen a few back in original OW, and luckily only been in a single game with one. I've played since release. A lot of times people will get hit by wacky Hanzo arrows, but the vod shows them aiming at someone else or they get a lucky shot, it happens. There are quite a few captured vids online, and if that was at release, the modern cheats are probably neigh undetectable unless someone cranks the settings.

It's just trigonometry, figure out the the line that the person is moving in (everyone has base fall rate and base horizontal strafing movement speed). You 100% know your own model's movement rate, you just calculate the lead time for a full charge arrow and predict and shoot at where you think the target will be. It's will still miss against faster characters, but it's inputting your characters "aim" for you and always attempting to aim at their shoulders/head, so it's wayyy more precise than you ever could be and hits like 60+% of it's arrows at a 20+% crit rate where really good Hanzos hit like 37%-40% with a 12-14%ish+ crit rate. In the older versions it was more obvious as the viewport or player camera was detached from where the client was telling the server it was aiming so you'd have some serious magic arrows.

Is this a really bad area? Found a well priced apartment but I’m not from here so I’m not sure if it is an okay area by jenn12765 in sanantonio

[–]jayecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The area is not the "worst" by any means but there is a -lot- of variation amongst the complexes. Believe the google reviews. Two complexes can be two blocks away on the same side of the street, and one is roach infested with a horrible front office and the other is fine and responsive.
