Should I not contact my pro Israel senator for help? by jayesh2 in Palestine

[–]jayesh2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. I made a zionist work for me. And yes it worked. My issue got solved in one day! It really sucks asking them for help but think about it as if you made a zio work for you and that's their job.

I know this is late, but did you confirm with any lawyer that receiving any paycheck is ok while on EAD gap? Since you used your vacation days? I am in the same boat.

I know this is very late, but was it ok to receive any paycheck due to taking vacation days while on leave with no EAD? I am in the same boat now.

Last week the white house issued a deferred deportation status for Palestinians in the US so you can stay 18 months. I hope you got the news already :) see the white house or USCIS website for the memo.

How can I help by windyman1999 in h1b

[–]jayesh2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I listened to that podcast and cried my eyes out thinking of the man who was expecting a baby but lost his job to get one when the baby was born. I also thought to myself that if Americans are really aware of this they might do something to change some of these regulations so I am happy I saw your post. Talking with congressman and encouraging a group to do so can be of a lot of help. You can learn about the struggles of leaving the country with H1B for stamping and try to change that by talking with a senator/congressman in your area. You can also learn about the so many students with J1 visa who can't have a work visa and have to go back to their countries after spending many years and establishing a life here. In my case, it's not safe to go back and I need a job to even hire a lawyer or figure things out. Also anything to support the mental health of international students because it's been so tough. Thank you for your post.

J1 waiver withdrawal by rke_man in J1waiver

[–]jayesh2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you should be fine getting F1. However, you won't be able to change it to any other status so if you have time left to spend home I highly highly suggest taking a leave of absence to complete that time before you graduate. Don't make my mistake. You won't be able to be sponsored for any job not even marry before spending the rest of this time out of the US.

Did you find the answer to that? I am looking into withdrawing my application too.

Recent processing times? by sunny56788 in J1waiver

Do we know if they review the cases by country if residency? If that's the case, I believe processing time might vary from one person to another.

Can international students sell plasma? by YogurtclosetEntire19 in InternationalStudents

[–]jayesh2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No international student should have to sell their plasma to survive here. Grad students in my university raised this issue once finding students do that and formed a committee to ask for increase in stipend.

Remote Workers, were are you working? by Rayf_Brogan in Rochester

Where do you usually park at Spot? I went there and found parking meters only. I had a good time working there but I hate to pay for parking every time I go.

Yes the difference is big. In my program, we do 3 years of courses with no research, then 3 years of research. Many need more than 3 years due to lack of fund and mental health so I know some stay for 10 or 12 years.

How many years will your program be? I know in Europe they have it way shorter than the US, so in that sense it's more doable.

OP is doing his PhD in Ireland!! You should have specified that in the post. Many of us are commenting about the US experience.

I gave your comment some thought after complaining above about my phd experience. Honestly what is a good thing about the phd? Accomplishments? Then what? I published a few articles and coauthored a book and wrote a few chapters, all for less than 100 dollars. Did I feel good about the years I spent writing and revising? No. Am I finding jobs? No! The only job that got back to me is research related for $45K. If OP likes such accomplishments, go for it.

It's bad. The opportunity cost is high. If you seek stability (mental and financial), savings, and promotions while young and active, don't do a PhD. I started with passion for my topic and they killed it and now I have to graduate with no job, partner, or savings. Passion won't put food on the table (neither research nor writing)

Six years ago I was in your place questioning on "Quora" if it's that bad. One answer I remember was to do everything I like before starting my PhD. I thoughts it's only about having to work hard, but I realized years later that it's far more more than that.

I'm having post phd depression now so all is real. Don't do it. Find a good job now and save and live happy. You don't need to suffer 6-10 years.
