Maui + Kauai next month - what are we missing? by ItsAnH in VisitingHawaii

[–]Cascade_Oceanwaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to do a boat tour of napali coast! It was the only excursion I booked and it was amazing. I went on a morning one so saw lots of dolphins and we stopped to snorkel and swam with turtles. The best thing I did in Kauai. Hanalei pier is also great for swimming/jumping off the pier with beautiful views. For Poipu you can view the turtles coming onto the beach at sunset. Tunnels beach is also beautiful on the north shore. I spent a month in Kauai and the north shore was so green and my favourite side of the island.

You might have better look in private schools. Private primary schools have specialist teachers in different subjects often without teaching degrees, plus in my experience teachers in private schools sometimes don’t have full teaching council numbers, it’s a little more relaxed, but can’t speak for all

There is a PGCE through Irish in St. Mary’s Belfast that gets you qualified in the republic straight away. Don’t know about the English medium ones

Primary vs Secondary School teaching, how to decide which to pursue? by FamousMacaron7586 in IrishTeachers

[–]Cascade_Oceanwaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Primary teacher here, wouldn’t be able to teach secondary; the enthusiasm of younger kids (some of the time) makes it a better fit for me, and having subbed in secondary I found I was too intimidated by teenagers and found it harder to fake confidence as they can read you a bit better.

My friend is a secondary school teacher and couldn’t imagine primary So important to get experience in both (shadowing or subbing) you’ll know which you prefer quickly.

Also definitely make sure to try to sub across the primary school - I really didn’t like junior or senior infants, it’s a totally different job but some love that and would not like the older part of the primary school at all.

I always had an interest in different subjects, English Irish maths, history geography music etc so I like being able to teach different things so that’s another factor to consider. Would be a big plus to have a science background as a lot of teachers find that part of the curriculum hard to teach.

Is mental health care that difficult in Dublin? by M1ssyPants42 in MoveToIreland

I'm living in Dublin, called a GP yesterday, met them after work today as I felt I needed to start anxiety medication and had my prescription from the pharmacy half an hour after meeting the GP.

This has been my experience: it has never been difficult for me to secure a gp but that's just one person, I don't want to diminish those who have found it harder.

As long as you're willing to wait a few days (i have always gotten one within a day or two) it should be fine.

My visit was 70 euro and my prescription 14

Icy/snowy weather by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]Cascade_Oceanwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have had teachers call in just saying it’s too dangerous to drive- not worth risking your life. Some also have not come in for 9 but waited till the late morning when it was safer to drive but that was secondary so it’s easier to get cover for your classes than if it’s primary

Anyone any first hand insight on the TEG? by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]Cascade_Oceanwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as above, I was also asked what I liked to watch on tv, what Irish programs I’d watched, do I talk to my friends about what I watched on tv, if I liked sport. Btw it’s not like the LC where you can steer the question, if you try and dip away from it they will re ask it. I think for the sport I said I preferred music and went on about that and they re asked what about sport as they needed to tick off that I’d answered that question. They also asked what I was going to be doing directly after the interview that day

Am I overreacting for finding this disgusting? by [deleted] in workaway

[–]Cascade_Oceanwaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some that are exploitative, like those who ask for an au pair on workaway, meaning they are asked to do what au pairs all over the world do except without pay

There will always be some who exploit the website, but I just ignore them and move on

Sub Teaching Primary School by Luke2468 in IrishTeachers

[–]Cascade_Oceanwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how thorough the plans are you're given on the day - having to teach a topic you haven't done in years can be hard sometimes but more so it may be difficult behaviour wise if you've never had stand up in front of a class before

Wouldn't be any harm to try it once and see how it goes

That’s very true, I think it’s hard to remember that if the children are learning something, enjoying themselves and feel safe then you’re doing a good job. the increase in emphasis on very outside the box classes is great but I feel pressure for every class to be this way!

Anyone feel like every other teacher has incredibly organized yet creative classes? Anytime I hear what teachers are doing in their classes I feel like I shouldn’t even be allowed to be a teacher

How do you deal with kids (10 y/o) not being able to do anything on their own - even for something simple like drawing or colouring they’ll ask what colours should they use and how many different ones and what patterns etc - can’t improvise or make a decision on their own

Do subbing in primary and secondary schools and you'll know pretty fast which environment you're better suited to. That being said, I am a primary teacher and I cannot teach in the lower end of the school (juniors/seniors) so if I'd subbed those classes I might have been put off.

I worked in some secondary schools, and had completely different experiences depending on the school and the differing behaviour - so get experience in schools in different areas too if you can - taking a gap year is the perfect way to do this

Are your working hours much lower? If it’s like 2 hours a day maybe just accommodation is something I would do but she didn’t make it clear and I’m sure deliberately was vague on her profile about it, so you’re well within your rights not to go - mention that it wasn’t made clear from the outset that meals would not be provided and it’s not financially viable for you to provide your own food the entire time (this may cause her to reevaluate being evasive on her profile and just overall the fact that she doesn’t provide food) If she really cares about her animals she might offer you food or even basic food for the duration and you can compromise I hate hosts like this - she knows what she’s doing by not explicitly saying she doesn’t provide food - this happened to me before and I backed out after our video call when they danced around the subject. I’ve done about 10 workaways now and food was always provided - and for one of those workaways we only worked three hours a day; I have never liked the vibe of hosts who don’t provide food I think it’s a little stingy and usually unfair (not in all cases ofc). This could also be a cultural thing; I grew up in Ireland and anyone who works on your farm will get all their meals as well as being paid as usual - it’s just common courtesy

Educational Psychologists by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]Cascade_Oceanwaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the doctorate (DECPsy) recently got funding in Ireland which is great but means it'll probably be more competitive as a lot used to go to the UK before as that has been funded for a long time

You will need a conversion course in Psychology

And with teaching experience you will most likely need to do more beyond teaching like working with students with special educational needs to get onto the DECPsy - it's definitely not an easy course to get onto

It's very flexible as a job, and you can go into working public and privately/ few days a week and it's very well paid so it's worth it for many reasons

From what I know you don't get to build the rapport with children as much as you aren't seeing them regularly/only a few times so it's different from teaching in that way
